Herschel-PACS imaging of protostars in the HH 1â2 outflow complex
We present 70 and 160 ÎŒm Herschel science demonstration images of a field in the Orion A molecular cloud that contains the prototypical Herbig-Haro objects HH 1 and 2, obtained with the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS). These observations demonstrate Herschelâs unprecedented ability to study the rich population of protostars in the Orion molecular clouds
at the wavelengths where they emit most of their luminosity. The four protostars previously identified by Spitzer 3.6â40 ÎŒm imaging and spectroscopy are detected in the 70 ÎŒm band, and three are clearly detected at 160 ÎŒm. We measure photometry of the protostars in the PACS bands and assemble their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from 1 to 870 ÎŒm with these data, Spitzer spectra and
photometry, 2MASS data, and APEX sub-mm data. The SEDs are fit to models generated with radiative transfer codes. From these fits we can constrain the fundamental properties of the protostars. We find luminosities in the range 12â84 L_â and envelope densities spanning over two orders of magnitude. This implies that the four protostars have a wide range of envelope infall rates and evolutionary
states: two have dense, infalling envelopes, while the other two have only residual envelopes. We also show the highly irregular and filamentary structure of the cold dust and gas surrounding the protostars as traced at 160 ÎŒm
Experiments shed new light on nickel-fluorine reactions
Isotopic tracer experiments and scale-impingement experiments show fluorine to be the migrating species through the nickel fluoride scale formed during the fluorination of nickel. This is in contrast to nickel oxide scales, where nickel is the migrating species
A video display interface for the LORAN-C navigation receiver development system
A microprocessor-based development system was designed and fabricated for prototype test of navigation receiver designs. During use of this system in the development of low-cost LORAN-C receiver/processor concepts, the limitations of the integral KIM-1 display were severely felt. It was to augment this numerical display that the video character display was produced. The circuit design presented meets the need for a flexible-format display capable of driving a small standard video monitor with only minimal demands upon microprocessor memory and MPU cycles
Red blood cells and other non-spherical capsules in shear flow: oscillatory dynamics and the tank-treading-to-tumbling transition
We consider the motion of red blood cells and other non-spherical
microcapsules dilutely suspended in a simple shear flow. Our analysis indicates
that depending on the viscosity, membrane elasticity, geometry and shear rate,
the particle exhibits either tumbling, tank-treading of the membrane about the
viscous interior with periodic oscillations of the orientation angle, or
intermittent behavior in which the two modes occur alternately. For red blood
cells, we compute the complete phase diagram and identify a novel
tank-treading-to-tumbling transition at low shear rates. Observations of such
motions coupled with our theoretical framework may provide a sensitive means of
assessing capsule properties.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Low Space External Memory Construction of the Succinct Permuted Longest Common Prefix Array
The longest common prefix (LCP) array is a versatile auxiliary data structure
in indexed string matching. It can be used to speed up searching using the
suffix array (SA) and provides an implicit representation of the topology of an
underlying suffix tree. The LCP array of a string of length can be
represented as an array of length words, or, in the presence of the SA, as
a bit vector of bits plus asymptotically negligible support data
structures. External memory construction algorithms for the LCP array have been
proposed, but those proposed so far have a space requirement of words
(i.e. bits) in external memory. This space requirement is in some
practical cases prohibitively expensive. We present an external memory
algorithm for constructing the bit version of the LCP array which uses
bits of additional space in external memory when given a
(compressed) BWT with alphabet size and a sampled inverse suffix array
at sampling rate . This is often a significant space gain in
practice where is usually much smaller than or even constant. We
also consider the case of computing succinct LCP arrays for circular strings
Readout Concepts for DEPFET Pixel Arrays
Field effect transistors embedded into a depleted silicon bulk (DEPFETs) can
be used as the first amplifying element for the detection of small signal
charges deposited in the bulk by ionizing particles, X-ray photons or visible
light. Very good noise performance at room temperature due to the low
capacitance of the collecting electrode has been demonstrated. Regular two
dimensional arrangements of DEPFETs can be read out by turning on individual
rows and reading currents or voltages in the columns. Such arrangements allow
the fast, low power readout of larger arrays with the possibility of random
access to selected pixels. In this paper, different readout concepts are
discussed as they are required for arrays with incomplete or complete clear and
for readout at the source or the drain. Examples of VLSI chips for the steering

Self-pulsation dynamics in narrow stripe semiconductor lasers
In this paper, we address the physical origin of self-pulsation in narrow stripe edge emitting semiconductor lasers. We present both experimental time-averaged polarization-resolved near-field measurements performed with a charged-coupled device camera and picosecond time resolved near-field measurements performed with a streak camera. These results demonstrate dynamic spatial-hole burning during pulse formation and evolution. We conclude from these experimental results that the dominant process which drives the self-pulsation in this type of laser diode is carrier induced effective refractive index change induced by the spatial-hole burning
Speed Limits in General Relativity
Some standard results on the initial value problem of general relativity in
matter are reviewed. These results are applied first to show that in a well
defined sense, finite perturbations in the gravitational field travel no faster
than light, and second to show that it is impossible to construct a warp drive
