    Effect on head-wind profiles and mean head-wind velocity on landing capacity flying constant-airspeed and constant-groundspeed approaches

    A study was conducted to determine the effect of head-wind profiles and mean head-wind velocities on runway landing capacity for airplanes flying constant-airspeed and constant-groundspeed approaches. It was determined that when the wind profiles were encountered with the currently used constant airspeed approach method, the landing capacity was reduced. The severity of these reductions increased as the mean head-wind value of the profile increased. When constant-groundspeed approaches were made in the same wind profiles, there were no losses in landing capacity. In an analysis of mean head winds, it was determined that in a mean head wind of 35 knots, the landing capacity using constant-airspeed approaches was 13% less than for the no wind condition. There were no reductions in landing capacity with constant-groundspeed approaches for mean head winds less than 35 knots. This same result was observed when the separation intervals between airplanes was reduced

    Power law violation of the area law in quantum spin chains

    The sub-volume scaling of the entanglement entropy with the system's size, nn, has been a subject of vigorous study in the last decade [1]. The area law provably holds for gapped one dimensional systems [2] and it was believed to be violated by at most a factor of log(n)\log\left(n\right) in physically reasonable models such as critical systems. In this paper, we generalize the spin1-1 model of Bravyi et al [3] to all integer spin-ss chains, whereby we introduce a class of exactly solvable models that are physical and exhibit signatures of criticality, yet violate the area law by a power law. The proposed Hamiltonian is local and translationally invariant in the bulk. We prove that it is frustration free and has a unique ground state. Moreover, we prove that the energy gap scales as ncn^{-c}, where using the theory of Brownian excursions, we prove c2c\ge2. This rules out the possibility of these models being described by a conformal field theory. We analytically show that the Schmidt rank grows exponentially with nn and that the half-chain entanglement entropy to the leading order scales as n\sqrt{n} (Eq. 16). Geometrically, the ground state is seen as a uniform superposition of all ss-colored Motzkin walks. Lastly, we introduce an external field which allows us to remove the boundary terms yet retain the desired properties of the model. Our techniques for obtaining the asymptotic form of the entanglement entropy, the gap upper bound and the self-contained expositions of the combinatorial techniques, more akin to lattice paths, may be of independent interest.Comment: v3: 10+33 pages.     High performance, high density hydrocarbon fuels

    The fuels were selected from 77 original candidates on the basis of estimated merit index and cost effectiveness. The ten candidates consisted of 3 pure compounds, 4 chemical plant streams and 3 refinery streams. Critical physical and chemical properties of the candidate fuels were measured including heat of combustion, density, and viscosity as a function of temperature, freezing points, vapor pressure, boiling point, thermal stability. The best all around candidate was found to be a chemical plant olefin stream rich in dicyclopentadiene. This material has a high merit index and is available at low cost. Possible problem areas were identified as low temperature flow properties and thermal stability. An economic analysis was carried out to determine the production costs of top candidates. The chemical plant and refinery streams were all less than 44 cent/kg while the pure compounds were greater than 44 cent/kg. A literature survey was conducted on the state of the art of advanced hydrocarbon fuel technology as applied to high energy propellents. Several areas for additional research were identified

    Quasi-Adiabatic Continuation in Gapped Spin and Fermion Systems: Goldstone's Theorem and Flux Periodicity

    We apply the technique of quasi-adiabatic continuation to study systems with continuous symmetries. We first derive a general form of Goldstone's theorem applicable to gapped nonrelativistic systems with continuous symmetries. We then show that for a fermionic system with a spin gap, it is possible to insert π\pi-flux into a cylinder with only exponentially small change in the energy of the system, a scenario which covers several physically interesting cases such as an s-wave superconductor or a resonating valence bond state.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, final version in press at JSTA

    Foreign Ownership of Broadcasting: The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and Beyond

    In an increasingly global market, severe restrictions upon foreign investment in broadcasting companies have enabled them to remain primarily domestic entities. This Note reviews these restrictions and advocates reforming the world-wlde system of broadcasting ownership regulation. This author discusses the major policies underlying the current regulations and demonstrates their implications by looking at several hypothetical regulatory schemes. The Note then focuses upon regulatory systems that are currently being used, as well as a hypothetical system based upon reciprocity. In the process, the author reviews the ownership restrictions of the United States, Canada, Australia, the European Community, and several lesser-developed markets. Finally, the Note weighs the various approaches currently used and proposes an ideal system of regulation for the global broadcasting industry

    An analytical and experimental investigation of a 1.8 by 3.7 meter Fresnel lens solar concentrator

    Line-focusing acrylic Fresnel lenses with application potential in the 200 to 370 C range are being analytically and experimentally evaluated. Investigations previously conducted with a 56 cm wide lens have been extended by the present study to experimentation/analyses with a 1.8 by 3.7 m lens. A measured peak concentration ratio of 64 with 90 percent of the transmitted energy focused into a 5.0 cm width was achieved. A peak concentration of 61 and a 90 percent target width of 4.5 cm were analytically computed. The experimental and analytical lens transmittance was 81 percent and 86 percent, respectively. The lens also was interfaced with a receiver assembly and operated in the collection mode. The collection efficiency ranged from 42 percent at 100 C to 26 percent at 300 C
