    Checklist and Distribution of Arkansas Pteridophytes

    Over the past 14 years, an effort was made to summarize and improve our knowledge of the Arkansas pteridophyte flora beyond that developed by Taylor and Demaree (1979). They presented a flora of 68 species plus 2 varieties plus 4 hybrids, for a total of 74 taxa vouchered with 1335 county-level occurrence records. Changes in accepted nomenclature, field work, and herbaria searches have added as new to the flora 10 species plus 1 variety plus 7 hybrids, supported with 74 county-level occurrence records. Another 815 county-level occurrence records were added to the known flora. The Arkansas pteridophyte flora now consists of 78 species plus 3 varieties plus 11hybrids, supported with 2224 county-level occurrence records. Achecklist, 92 distribution maps, a history of Arkansas pteridophyte floristics, corrective nomenclatural notes, and a phylogeny based ona recent national treatment on pteridophytes are provided

    In their article, ‘The spatialities of actually existing neoliberalism in Glasgow, 1977 to present’, Mark Boyle, Christopher McWilliams and Gareth Rice (2008) usefully problematise our current understanding of neoliberal urbanism. Our response is aimed at developing a sympathetic but critical approach to Boyle et al's understanding of neoliberal urbanism as illustrated by the Glasgow example. In particular, the counterposing by Boyle et al of a 'hybrid, mutant' model to a 'pure' model of neoliberalism for us misrepresents existing models of neoliberalism as a perfectly finished object rather than a roughly mottled process. That they do not identify any ‘pure’ model leads them to create a straw construct against which they can claim a more sophisticated, refined approach to the messiness of neoliberal urbanism. In contrast, we view neoliberalism as a contested and unstable response to accumulation crises at various scales of analysis

    We estimate the gravitational and atmospheric effects of a fictional substance known as Cavorite, a material proposed by H.G. Wells that is “opaque to gravitation”. We conclude that for a Cavorite sheet of radius 1 m the impact on the gravitational acceleration is only meaningful at less than 12 m above the plate, and is insignificant at heights greater than this. Therefore, the atmosphere is unlikely to vent away as claimed

    In this paper we consider whether a neutrino sail, a sheet of material absorbing neutrinos and gaining thrust from their momentum change, is a viable method of spacecraft propulsion. We calculate the thrust that could be achieved per unit area and compare this to that possible using a photon solar sail. We also calculate the thickness of sail necessary assuming that there are no special conditions under which the cross section for neutrino interactions with nuclei can be increased. We find that a thickness of 34000 light years would be necessary if a sheet of osmium were used, whereas neutron star matter could achieve this at 189 km thickness. We conclude that a neutrino sail is not a practical method of propulsion
