State Variation in the Determinants of Motor Vehicle Fatalities
Research on motor vehicle safety has involved virtually all modes of transportation. Most of these have been national in scope with relatively few studies focused on the determinants of motor vehicle fatalities at the state level. This paper investigates the determinants of motor vehicle fatalities across the states of California, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Texas, which collectively account for 27% of U.S. motor vehicle fatalities in 2006. An important finding is that fatalities vary significantly by state even after controlling for commonly cited fatality determinants
Properties of the phi meson at high temperatures and densities
We calculate the spectral density of the phi meson in a hot bath of nucleons
and pions using a general formalism relating self-energy to the forward
scattering amplitude (FSA). In order to describe the low energy FSA, we use
experimental data along with a background term. For the high energy FSA, a
Regge parameterization is employed. We verify the resulting FSA using
dispersion techniques. We find that the position of the peak of the spectral
density is slightly shifted from its vacuum position and that its width is
considerably increased. The width of the spectral density at a temperature of
150 MeV and at normal nuclear density is more than 90 MeV.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Poster presented at Quark Matter 200

Typical properties of optimal growth in the Von Neumann expanding model for large random economies
We calculate the optimal solutions of the fully heterogeneous Von Neumann
expansion problem with processes and goods in the limit .
This model provides an elementary description of the growth of a production
economy in the long run. The system turns from a contracting to an expanding
phase as increases beyond . The solution is characterized by a universal
behavior, independent of the parameters of the disorder statistics. Associating
technological innovation to an increase of , we find that while such an
increase has a large positive impact on long term growth when , its

Strong Color Field Baryonic Remnants in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions at 200A GeV
The effects of strong color electric fields (SCF) on the baryon production at
RHIC are studied in the framework of HIJING/B\=B (v2.0) model. The particle
species dependence of nuclear modification factors (NMF) are analyzed for Au+Au
collisions at 200A GeV. A doubling of the string tension leading to a
modification of the strangeness suppression according to Schwinger mechanism is
shown to provide an alternate explanation to coalescence models for the
interpretation of the observed baryon and meson production at moderate
and results in a predicted enhancement in the (multi)strange (anti)hyperon

Maximum Azimuthal Anisotropy of Neutrons from Nb-Nb Collisions at 400 AMeV and the Nuclear Equation of State
We measured the first azimuthal distributions of triple--differential cross
sections of neutrons emitted in heavy-ion collisions, and compared their
maximum azimuthal anisotropy ratios with Boltzmann--Uehling--Uhlenbeck (BUU)
calculations with a momentum-dependent interaction. The BUU calculations agree
with the triple- and double-differential cross sections for positive rapidity
neutrons emitted at polar angles from 7 to 27 degrees; however, the maximum
azimuthal anisotropy ratio for these free neutrons is insensitive to the size
of the nuclear incompressibility modulus K characterizing the nuclear matter
