    Simulating Gyrokinetic Microinstabilities in Stellarator Geometry with GS2

    The nonlinear gyrokinetic code GS2 has been extended to treat non-axisymmetric stellarator geometry. Electromagnetic perturbations and multiple trapped particle regions are allowed. Here, linear, collisionless, electrostatic simulations of the quasi-axisymmetric, three-field period National Compact Stellarator Experiment (NCSX) design QAS3-C82 have been successfully benchmarked against the eigenvalue code FULL. Quantitatively, the linear stability calculations of GS2 and FULL agree to within ~10%.Comment: Submitted to Physics of Plasmas. 9 pages, 14 figure

    Since horn fly populations became established throughout Brazil, complaints regarding control failure have increased around the country. A broad survey to evaluate the susceptibility of horn flies to both organophosphate (OP) and pyrethroid insecticides was conducted from October 2000 to April 2003. Bioassays using filter papers impregnated with cypermethrin, permethrin or diazinon were conducted on 154 horn fly populations in 14 states and 78 municipalities

    Certain types of the human papilloma virus (HPV) are well established as the primary cause of cervical cancer. Several studies have shown that HPV testing can improve the detection rate of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), but these have been carried out primarily in younger women. In this study we evaluated the role of HPV testing as an adjunct to cytology in women aged 35 or over. An additional aim was to evaluate commercially available kits for HPV testing. A total of 2988 eligible women aged 34 or more attending for a routine smear in 40 general practitioner practices received HPV testing in addition to routine cytology, after having given written informed consent. Samples were assayed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and two versions of the Hybrid Capture test for HPV, and women were invited for colposcopy if there was any cytological abnormality (including borderline smears) or the PCR test was positive. Any apparent abnormality was biopsied and loop-excision was performed as necessary. CIN was judged by histology; 42 women had high-grade CIN, of which six were cytology negative (86% sensitivity for borderline or worse) and three had a borderline smear (79% sensitivity for mild dyskaryosis or worse). The positive predictive value of a borderline smear was only 3.1%. Eleven high-grade lesions were negative by the PCR HPV test (sensitivity 74%). The first generation Hybrid Capture II test had a similar sensitivity but an unacceptably high false positive rate (18.3%), while the newer Hybrid Capture II microtitre kit had a 95% sensitivity and a 2.3% positivity rate in normal women when used at a 2 pg ml−1 cut-off (positive predictive value 27%). Cytology performed very well in this older cohort of women. The newer Hybrid Capture II microtitre test may be a useful adjunct, especially if the results reported here are reproducible in other studies. A combined screening test offers the possibility of greater protection and/or longer screening intervals, which could reduce the overall cost of the screening programme. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig

    Semileptonic Branching Fraction of Charged and Neutral B Mesons

    An examination of leptons in Υ(4S){\Upsilon (4S)} events tagged by reconstructed BB decays yields semileptonic branching fractions of b=(10.1±1.8±1.4)%b_-=(10.1 \pm 1.8\pm 1.4)\% for charged and b0=(10.9±0.7±1.1)%b_0=(10.9 \pm 0.7\pm 1.1)\% for neutral BB mesons. This is the first measurement for charged BB. Assuming equality of the charged and neutral semileptonic widths, the ratio b/b0=0.93±0.18±0.12b_-/b_0=0.93 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.12 is equivalent to the ratio of lifetimes.     Precision Measurement of the Ds+Ds+D_s^{*+}- D_s^+ Mass Difference

    We have measured the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting M(Ds+)M(Ds+)=144.22±0.47±0.37MeVM(D_s^{*+})-M(D_s^+) = 144.22\pm 0.47\pm 0.37 MeV, significantly more precise than the previous world average. We minimize the systematic errors by also measuring the vector-pseudoscalar mass difference M(D0)M(D0)M(D^{*0})-M(D^0) using the radiative decay D0D0γD^{*0}\rightarrow D^0\gamma, obtaining [M(Ds+)M(Ds+)][M(D0)M(D0)]=2.09±0.47±0.37MeV[M(D_s^{*+})-M(D_s^+)]-[M(D^{*0})-M(D^0)] = 2.09\pm 0.47\pm 0.37 MeV. This is then combined with our previous high-precision measurement of M(D0)M(D0)M(D^{*0})-M(D^0), which used the decay D0D0π0D^{*0}\rightarrow D^0\pi^0. We also measure the mass difference M(Ds+)M(D+)=99.5±0.6±0.3M(D_s^+)-M(D^+)=99.5\pm 0.6\pm 0.3 MeV, using the ϕπ+\phi\pi^+ decay modes of the Ds+D_s^+ and D+D^+ mesons.Comment: 18 pages uuencoded compressed postscript (process with uudecode then gunzip). hardcopies with figures can be obtained by sending mail to: [email protected]

    Observation of a New Charmed Strange Meson

    Using the CLEO-II detector, we have obtained evidence for a new meson decaying to D0K+D^0 K^+. Its mass is 2573.21.6+1.7±0.8±0.52573.2^{+1.7}_{-1.6}\pm 0.8\pm 0.5 {}~MeV/c2c^2 and its width is 164+5±316^{+5}_{-4}\pm 3~MeV/c2c^2.     Measurement of the branching fraction for Υ(1S)τ+τ\Upsilon (1S) \to \tau^+ \tau^-

    We have studied the leptonic decay of the Υ(1S)\Upsilon (1S) resonance into tau pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the particles is an identified electron. We find B(Υ(1S)τ+τ)=(2.61 ± 0.12 +0.090.13)B(\Upsilon(1S) \to \tau^+ \tau^-) = (2.61~\pm~0.12~{+0.09\atop{-0.13}})%.     Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in Λc+Λπ+\Lambda_c^+ \to \Lambda\pi^+ and Λc+Σ+π0\Lambda_c^+ \to \Sigma^+\pi^0

    We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\ decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for the decay mode Λc+Λπ+\Lambda_c^+ \to \Lambda\pi^+ and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm 0.06 for the decay mode ΛcΣ+π0\Lambda_c \to \Sigma^+\pi^0 . By combining these measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes.     Using the CLEO-II detector at CESR we have measured the ratio of branching fractions, B(D+Kπ+π+)/B(D0Kπ+)=2.35±0.16±0.16{\cal B}(D^+\rightarrow K^- \pi^+ \pi^+)/{\cal B}(D^0 \rightarrow K^-\pi^+) = 2.35 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.16. Our recent measurement of B(D0Kπ+){\cal B}(D^0 \rightarrow K^-\pi^+) then gives B(D+Kπ+π+)=(9.3±0.6±0.8)%{\cal B}(D^+\rightarrow K^- \pi^+ \pi^+) = (9.3 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.8)\%.Comment: 6 pages (in REVTEX format). hardcopies with figures can be obtained by sending mail to: [email protected]

    Measurement of the B -> D^* l nu Branching Fractions and |Vcb|

    We study the exclusive semileptonic B meson decays B- -> D*0 l- nu and B0 -> D*+ l- nu using data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR. We present measurements of the branching fractions B(B0 -> D*+ l-nu) = 0.5/f00* [4.49+/-0.32+/-0.39]% and B(B- -> D*0 l-nu) = 0.5/f+-*[5.13+/-0.54+/-0.64]%, where f00 and f+- are the neutral and charged B meson production fractions at the Upsilon(4s) resonance. Assuming isospion invariance and taking the charged to neutral B meson lifetimes measured at higher energy machines, we determine the ratio f+-/f00=1.04+/-0.14+/-0.13+-/-0.10; further assuming f+- + f00 = 1 we also determine the partial width G(B->D* l nu) = 29.9+/-1.9+/-2.7+/-2.0 ns-1 (independent of f+-/f00). From this partial width we calculate B -> D* l nu branching fractions that do not depend on f+-/f00, nor the individual B lifetimes, but only on the charged to neutral lifetime ratio. The product of the CKM matrix element |Vcb| times the normalization of the decay form factor at the point of zero recoil of the D* meson, F(y=1), is determined from a linear fit to the combined differential decay rate of the exclusive B->D* l nu decays: |Vcb|F(y) = 0.0351 +/- 0.0019 +/- 0.0018 +/- 0.0008. Using theoretical calculations of the form factor normalization we extract a value for |Vcb|. LATEX (REVTEX style) file with uuencoded figures attached (uses PSBOX).
