    Resonant enhancements of high-order harmonic generation

    Solving the one-dimensional time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for simple model potentials, we investigate resonance-enhanced high-order harmonic generation, with emphasis on the physical mechanism of the enhancement. By truncating a long-range potential, we investigate the significance of the long-range tail, the Rydberg series, and the existence of highly excited states for the enhancements in question.     Over the past thirty-five years, the U.S. adult obesity rate has more than doubled from roughly 15% to 35%, reflecting a general diffusion of obesity across all segments of the adult population (USDHHS). Obesity is a concern because it increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and most forms of cancer, except for lung. Earlier studies of obesity of U.S. adults have largely focused on data in a single cross-section or one round of a panel survey. Chen and Huffman (2010) show that food and drink prices significantly affect U.S. women’s probability of being obese but not for men.     Is Entrepreneurial Success Predictable? An Ex-Ante Analysis of the Character-Based Approach

    This paper empirically analyzes whether the character-based approach, which focuses on the personality structure and the human capital of business founders, allows prediction of entrepreneurial success. A unique data set is used consisting of 414 persons whose personal characteristics were analyzed by different methods, namely an one-day assessment center (AC) and a standardized questionnaire, before they launched their business. Results are partly unexpected and weaker than previous ex-post findings: first, we found correlations between the AC data and the questionnaire in one subgroup only. Second, the predictive power of the AC data is slightly better than that of the questionnaire, but lower than expected in theory. Interestingly, for those subgroups where the AC data have low predictive power, the questionnaire does better. Third, when success is measured in terms of employees hired, the character-based approach is a poor predictor. Copyright 2008 The Authors.

    Near Infrared Spectra of Type Ia Supernovae

    We report near infrared (NIR) spectroscopic observations of twelve ``Branch-normal'' Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) which cover the wavelength region from 0.8-2.5 microns. Our sample more than doubles the number of SNe Ia with published NIR spectra within three weeks of maximum light. The epochs of observation range from thirteen days before maximum light to eighteen days after maximum light. A detailed model for a Type Ia supernovae is used to identify spectral features. The Doppler shifts of lines are measured to obtain the velocity and, thus, the radial distribution of elements. The NIR is an extremely useful tool to probe the chemical structure in the layers of SNe Ia ejecta. This wavelength region is optimal for examining certain products of the SNe Ia explosion that may be blended or obscured in other spectral regions. We identify spectral features from MgII, CaII, SiII, FeII, CoII, NiII and possibly MnII. We find no indications for hydrogen, helium or carbon in the spectra. The spectral features reveal important clues about the physical characteristics of SNe Ia. We use the features to derive upper limits for the amount of unburned matter, to identify the transition regions from explosive carbon to oxygen burning and from partial to complete silicon burning, and to estimate the level of mixing during and after the explosion.Comment: 44 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted by Ap

    Chandra Observations of NGC 4438: An Environmentally Damaged Galaxy in the Virgo Cluster

    We present results from a 25 ksec CHANDRA ACIS-S observation of galaxies NGC4438 and NGC4435 in the Virgo Cluster. X-ray emission in NGC4438 is observed in a ~700 pc nuclear region, a 2.3 kpc spherical bulge, and a network of filaments extending 4-10 kpc to the W and SW of the galaxy. The X-ray emission in all 3 regions is highly correlated to similar features observed in Halpha. Spectra of the filaments and bulge are well represented by a 0.4 keV MEKAL model with combined 0.3-2 keV intrinsic luminosity of 1.24x10^{40}erg/s, electron densities ~ 0.02-0.04 cm^{-3}, cooling times of 400-700 Myr and X-ray gas mass <~ 3.7x10^8 Msolar. In the nuclear region of NGC4438 X-ray emission is seen from the nucleus and from two outflow bubbles extending 360(730) pc to the NW(SE) of the nucleus. The spectrum of the NW outflow bubble plus nucleus is well fitted by an absorbed (n_H=1.9x10^{21} cm^{-2}) 0.58 keV MEKAL plasma model plus a heavily absorbed (n_H = 2.9 x10^{22} cm^{-2}) Gamma = 2, power law component. The electron density, cooling time, and X-ray gas mass in the NW outflow are ~0.5 cm^{-3}, 30 Myr and 3.5x10^6 Msolar. Weak X-ray emission is observed in the central region of NGC4435 with the peak of the hard emission coincident with the galaxy's optical center; while the peak of the soft X-ray emission is displaced 316 pc to the NE. The spectrum of NGC 4435 is well fitted by a non-thermal power law plus a thermal component from 0.2-0.3 keV diffuse ISM gas. We argue that the X-ray properties of gas outside the nuclear region in NGC4438 and in NGC4435 favor a high velocity, off-center collision between these galaxies ~ 100 Myr ago; while the nuclear X-ray emitting outflow gas in NGC4438 has been heated only recently (within ~ 1-2 Myr) by shocks (v_s ~ 600 kms^{-1}) possibly powered by a central AGN.Comment: 40 pages, 7 figures; minor changes to conform to published version, improved spectral fits to NGC 4435, improved figures 3,5; new figures 6b,

    We evaluate the decay rate of the uniformly accelerated proton. We obtain an analytic expression for inverse beta decay process caused by the acceleration. We evaluate the decay rate both from the inertial frame and from the accelerated frame where we should consider thermal radiation by Unruh effect. We explicitly check that the decay rates obtained in both frame coincide with each other.Comment: 11 page

    PSR 0943+10: a bare strange star?

    Recent work by Rankin & Deshpande strongly suggests that there exist strong ``micro-storms'' rotating around the magnetic axis of the 1.1s pulsar PSR 0943+10. Such a feature hints that most probably the large-voltage vacuum gap proposed by Ruderman & Sutherland (RS) does exist in the pulsar polar cap. However, there are severe arguments against the formation of the RS-type gap in pulsars, since the binding energies of both the Fe ions and the electrons in a neutron star's surface layer is too small to prevent thermionic ejection of the particles from the surface. Here we propose that PSR 0943+10 (probably also most of the other ``drifting'' pulsars) might be bare strange stars rather than normal neutron stars, in which the ``binding energy'' at the surface is merely infinity either for the case of ``pulsar'' or ``anti-pulsar''. It is further proposed that identifying a drifting pulsar as an anti-pulsar is the key criterion to distinguish strange stars from neutron stars.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, LaTeX, accepted 1999 July 9 by ApJ Letter
