Kinetic-energy absorber employs frictional force between mating cylinders
A kinetic energy absorbing device uses a series of coaxial, mating cylindrical surfaces. These surfaces have high frictional resistance to relative motion when axial impact forces are applied. The device is designed for safe deceleration of vehicles impacting on landing surfaces
Effects of hydrogen on ELI titanium alloy Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
Tensile tests on titanium alloy, following abrasion under hydrogen and temperature cycling, reveal lowered tensile strength, increased ductility, and no embrittlement. Fretting the metal on itself in flowing hydrogen or abrading with an iron file in flowing hydrogen produces titanium hydride
Venting of fission products and shielding in thermionic nuclear reactor systems
Most thermionic reactors are designed to allow the fission gases to escape out of the emitter. A scheme to allow the fission gases to escape is proposed. Because of the low activity of the fission products, this method should pose no radiation hazards
Schmitt trigger multivibrator
Schmitt trigger multivibrator circuit, capable of astable, monostable or bistable operation, incorporates an input circuit in conjunction with a Schmitt trigger circuit. The circuits form two output signal levels, are useful in switching circuit applications, initiates oscillations, and forms highly unsymmetrical wave forms
Use of the enzyme hexokinase for the reduction of inherent light levels
Use of enzyme hexokinase and glucose to reduce inherent light levels of ATP in luciferase composition
An approximate method for solution to variable moment of inertia problems
An approximation method is presented for reducing a nonlinear differential equation (for the 'weather vaning' motion of a wind turbine) to an equivalent constant moment of inertia problem. The integrated average of the moment of inertia is determined. Cycle time was found to be the equivalent cycle time if the rotating speed is 4 times greater than the system's minimum natural frequency
Charge-coupled device data processor for an airborne imaging radar system
Processing of raw analog echo data from synthetic aperture radar receiver into images on board an airborne radar platform is discussed. Processing is made feasible by utilizing charge-coupled devices (CCD). CCD circuits are utilized to perform input sampling, presumming, range correlation and azimuth correlation in the analog domain. These radar data processing functions are implemented for single-look or multiple-look imaging radar systems
Method and apparatus for simulating gravitational forces on a living organism
A method and apparatus for simulating gravitational forces on a living organism wherein a series of negative pressures are externally applied to successive length-wise sections of a lower limb of the organism. The pressures decreasing progressively with distance of said limb sections from the heart of the organism. A casing defines a chamber adapted to contain the limb of the organism and is rigidified to resist collapse upon the application of negative pressures to the interior of the chamber. Seals extend inwardly from the casing for effective engagement with the limb of the organism and, in cooperation with the limb, subdivide the chamber into a plurality of compartments each in negative pressure communicating relation with the limb
