Investigations of simulated aircraft flight through thunderstorm outflows

    Get PDF
The effects of wind shear on aircraft flying through thunderstorm gust fronts were investigated. A computer program was developed to solve the two dimensional, nonlinear equations of aircraft motion, including wind shear. The procedure described and documented accounts for spatial and temporal variations of the aircraft within the flow regime. Analysis of flight paths and control inputs necessary to maintain specified trajectories for aircraft having characteristics of DC-8, B-747, augmentor wing STOL, and DHC-6 aircraft was recorded. From the analysis an attempt was made to find criteria for reduction of the hazards associated with landing through thunderstorm gust fronts

Studies in a transonic rotor aerodynamics and noise facility

The design, construction and testing of a transonic rotor aerodynamics and noise facility was undertaken, using a rotating arm blade element support technique. This approach provides a research capability intermediate between that of a stationary element in a moving flow and that of a complete rotating blade system, and permits the acoustic properties of blade tip elements to be studied in isolation. This approach is an inexpensive means of obtaining data at high subsonic and transonic tip speeds on the effect of variations in tip geometry. The facility may be suitable for research on broad band noise and discrete noise in addition to high-speed noise. Initial tests were conducted over the Mach number range 0.3 to 0.93 and confirmed the adequacy of the acoustic treatment used in the facility to avoid reflection from the enclosure

The American Short Story from 1865 to 1900

Toe purpose of this thesis is to trace the development of the .American short story from about 1865 to about 1900. I propose to do this by dividing the material studied into four periods and then to weigh, examine, and compare the chief exponents of the American short story during each period. The divisions are: The Period Following the Civil War, of which I shall consider the stories of Bret Hart, Aldrich, Twain and James; The Era of Localized Romance, of which the stories of Cable and Jewett will be considered; The Reign of Dialect, dominated by Murfree. Harris and Page; and The Non-localized Short Story, in relation to which Stockton\u27s The Lady of the Tiger will be examined
