    Physical risk factors for neck pain.

    To identify physical risk factors for neck pain, a systematic review of the literature was carried out. Based on methodological quality and study design, 4 levels of evidence were defined to establish the strength of evidence for the relationship between risk factors and neck pain. Altogether, 22 cross-sectional studies, 2 prospective cohort studies, and 1 case-referent study were eligible for determining the level of evidence. The results showed some evidence for a positive relationship between neck pain and the duration of sitting and twisting or bending of the trunk. A sensitivity analysis was carried out excluding 3 items of the quality list, the importance of which seemed doubtful. On the basis of this sensitivity analysis, it was concluded that there is some evidence for a positive relationship between neck pain and the following work-related risk factors: neck flexion, arm force, arm posture, duration of sitting, twisting or bending of the trunk, hand-arm vibration, and workplace design

    Convergence in myoelectric control:Between individual patterns of myoelectric learning

    Objective: To support the design of assistive devices and prostheses, we investigated the changes in upper-limb muscle synergies during the practice of a myoelectric controlled game using proportional-sequential control. Methods: We evaluated 1) whether individual muscle synergies change in their structure; 2) variability; 3) distinctiveness; and 4) whether individuals become more similar with practice. Ten individuals practiced a myoelectric-controlled serious game for ten consecutive days (25 min/day) and one day after one week without training (retention). Results: The results showed that individuals decreased the number of synergies employed and modified their flexor synergies structure, becoming more similar as a group with practice. Nevertheless, within-individual synergies' variability and distinctiveness did not change. Conclusion: These results point out that individuals do not demonstrate muscle patterns less variable or differentiable after practice. However, participants increased performance and became more attuned to the task dynamics. Significance: The present findings indicate that, depending on the task requirements, individuals converge to more similar muscle activation patterns - a feature that should be further explored in prosthetic design

    Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi improve nutrient status of Commiphora myrrha seedlings under drought

    In dryland ecosystems, tree and shrub seedling establishment, growth and survival are limited by access to water and nutrients. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) increase seedling establishment and survival by enhancing nutrient and water acquisition. We executed a fully-factorial greenhouse experiment to determine the interactive effect of AMF (with and without), water deficit (four levels), and soil layer (topsoil and subsoil) on the biomass, growth, nutrient concentrations, and mycorrhizal root colonization of seedlings of Commiphora myrrha, a tree species that dominates large areas of dry forest and woodland in the Horn of Africa. Mycorrhizal seedlings had higher root and shoot biomass than non-mycorrhizal seedlings. They also had higher nutrient concentrations in root and shoot. Plant biomass was higher when plants were grown in topsoil at lower soil moisture levels. Mycorrhizal responsiveness was highest at lower soil moisture. The drought response index was higher for mycorrhizal than for non-mycorrhizal plants, indicating enhanced mycorrhizal benefits at lower water supply. Seedlings grew better in topsoil than in subsoil. Mycorrhizal colonization of roots of C. myrrha seedlings was higher with lower moisture and higher in topsoil than in subsoil. The increased performance of mycorrhizal C. myrrha indicates that mycorrhization is a major component of the adaptive strategy of seedlings of this species, similar to other species in these dryland deciduous ecosystems. We conclude that for restoration purposes with this species, nursery seedlings should be mycorrhized because of their enhanced growth performance

    Exertion Games involve physical effort and as a result can facilitate physical health benefits. We present Hanging off a Bar, an action hero-inspired Exertion Game in which players hang off an exercise bar over a virtual river for as long as possible. Initial observations from three events with audiences ranging from the general public to expert game designers suggest that Hanging off a Bar can be engaging for players and facilitate intense exertion within seconds. Furthermore, we collected suggestions for what game elements players believe could entice them to increase their physical effort investment. These suggestions, combined with Hanging off a Bar as research vehicle due to the easy measurement of exertion through hanging time, enable future explorations into the relationship between digital game elements and physical exertion, guiding designers on how to support exertion in digital game

    The design of a game-based training environment to enhance health care professionals’ skills in using eMental health:Study protocol for the user requirements analysis

    Background: E–mental health (EMH) offers various possibilities for mental health care delivery, with many studies demonstrating its clinical efficacy. However, the uptake of EMH technologies by mental health care professionals remains to be low. One of the reasons for this is the lack of knowledge and skills in using these technologies. Skill enhancement by means of serious gaming has been shown to be effective in other areas but has not yet been applied to the development of EMH skills of mental health care professionals. Objective: The aim of this paper is to describe a study protocol for the user requirements analysis for the design of a game-based training environment for mental health care professionals to enhance their skills in EMH. Methods: The user requirements are formulated using three complementary outputs: personas (lively descriptions of potential users), scenarios (situations that require EMH skills), and prerequisites (required technical and organizational conditions). We collected the data using a questionnaire, co-design sessions, and interviews. The questionnaire was used to determine mental health care professionals’ characteristics, attitudes, and skill levels regarding EMH and was distributed among mental health care professionals in the Netherlands. This led to a number of recognizable subuser groups as the basis for personas. Co-design sessions with mental health care professionals resulted in further specification of the personas and an identification of different user scenarios for the game-based training environment. Interviews with mental health care professionals helped to determine the preferences of mental health care professionals regarding training in EMH and the technical and organizational conditions required for the prospective game-based training environment to be used in practice. This combination of requirement elicitation methods allows for a good representation of the target population in terms of both a broad view of user needs (through the large N questionnaire) and an in-depth understanding of specific design requirements (through interviews and co-design). Results: The questionnaire was filled by 432 respondents; three co-design sessions with mental health care professionals and 17 interviews were conducted. The data have been analyzed, and a full paper on the results is expected to be submitted in the first half of 2021. Conclusions: To develop an environment that can effectively support professionals’ EMH skill development, it is important to offer training possibilities that address the specific needs of mental health care professionals. The approach described in this protocol incorporates elements that enable the design of a playful training environment that is user driven and flexible and considers the technical and organizational prerequisites that influence its implementation in practice. It describes a protocol that is replicable and provides a methodology for user requirements analyses in other projects and health care areas

    Physical exercise and cardiovascular response:design and implementation of a pediatric CMR cohort study

    To examine feasibility and reproducibility and to evaluate the cardiovascular response to an isometric handgrip exercise in low-risk pediatric population using Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance measurements. In a subgroup of 207 children with a mean age of 16 years participating in a population-based prospective cohort study, children performed an isometric handgrip exercise. During rest and exercise, continuous heart rate and blood pressure were measured. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) measurements included left ventricular mass, aortic distensibility and pulse wave velocity at rest and left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes, ejection fraction, stroke volume and cardiac output during rest and exercise. 207 children had successful CMR measurements in rest and 184 during exercise. We observed good reproducibility for all cardiac measurements. Heart rate increased with a mean ± standard deviation of 42.6% ± 20.0 and blood pressure with 6.4% ± 7.0, 5.4% ± 6.1 and 11.0% ± 8.3 for systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure respectively (p-values &lt; 0.05). During exercise, left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes and cardiac output increased, whereas left ventricular ejection fraction slightly decreased (p-values &lt; 0.05). Stroke volume did not change significantly. A sustained handgrip exercise of 7 min at 30-40% maximal voluntary contraction is a feasible exercise-test during CMR in a healthy pediatric population, which leads to significant changes in heart rate, blood pressure and functional measurements of the left ventricle in response to exercise. This approach offers great novel opportunities to detect subtle differences in cardiovascular health.</p
