Long Polar Fimbriae Contribute to Colonization by \u3ci\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/i\u3e O157:H7 In Vivo
The contribution of long polar fimbriae to intestinal colonization by Escherichia coli O157:H7 was evaluated in sheep, conventional pigs, and gnotobiotic piglets. E. coli O157:H7 strains with lpfA1 and lpfA2 mutated were recovered in significantly lower numbers and caused fewer attachment and effacement lesions than the parent strain
Beta-delayed-neutron studies of Sb and I performed with trapped ions
Beta-delayed-neutron (n) spectroscopy was performed using the
Beta-decay Paul Trap and an array of radiation detectors. The n
branching ratios and energy spectra for Sb and I were
obtained by measuring the time of flight of recoil ions emerging from the
trapped ion cloud. These nuclei are located at the edge of an isotopic region
identified as having n branching ratios that impact the r-process
abundance pattern around the A~130 peak. For Sb and I,
n branching ratios of 14.6(11)%, 17.6(28)%, and 7.6(28)% were
determined, respectively. The n energy spectra obtained for Sb
and I are compared with results from direct neutron measurements, and
the n energy spectrum for Sb has been measured for the first
time
Design and Analysis of an Array of Square Microstrip Patches for Nondestructive Measurement of Inner Material Properties of Various Structures Using Swept Microwave Frequencies
There are several microwave techniques and probes available for characterizing inner properties of materials [1]. Microstrip patches operating in cavity modes are well suited for determining the dielectric properties of materials. A microstrip patch can be characterized by its resonant frequency and quality factor (Q-factor) when operating in free-space. When the patch is covered by another material whose dielectric properties (real and imaginary parts) are different than that of free-space, resonant frequency and Q-factor of the patch will change. The changes in these two parameters are then related to the real and imaginary parts of the material permittivity. Subsequently, the permittivity of the material is related to its moisture content, density, temperature, grain size, etc. via available dielectric mixing models [2]. Such a device can be placed inside a material temporarily (snow pack for avalanche prediction) or permanently (concrete structures for water content and crack detection)
Low-lying level structure of Cu and its implications on the rp process
The low-lying energy levels of proton-rich Cu have been extracted
using in-beam -ray spectroscopy with the state-of-the-art -ray
tracking array GRETINA in conjunction with the S800 spectrograph at the
National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University.
Excited states in Cu serve as resonances in the
Ni(p,)Cu reaction, which is a part of the rp-process in
type I x-ray bursts. To resolve existing ambiguities in the reaction Q-value, a
more localized IMME mass fit is used resulting in ~keV. We derive
the first experimentally-constrained thermonuclear reaction rate for
Ni(p,)Cu. We find that, with this new rate, the
rp-process may bypass the Ni waiting point via the Ni(p,)
reaction for typical x-ray burst conditions with a branching of up to
40. We also identify additional nuclear physics uncertainties that
need to be addressed before drawing final conclusions about the rp-process
reaction flow in the Ni region.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for Phys. Rev.
Thermodynamic theory of epitaxial ferroelectric thin films with dense domain structures
A Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire-type nonlinear phenomenological theory is
presented, which enables the thermodynamic description of dense laminar
polydomain states in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films. The theory explicitly
takes into account the mechanical substrate effect on the polarizations and
lattice strains in dissimilar elastic domains (twins). Numerical calculations
are performed for PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 films grown on (001)-oriented cubic
substrates. The "misfit strain-temperature" phase diagrams are developed for
these films, showing stability ranges of various possible polydomain and
single-domain states. Three types of polarization instabilities are revealed
for polydomain epitaxial ferroelectric films, which may lead to the formation
of new polydomain states forbidden in bulk crystals. The total dielectric and
piezoelectric small-signal responses of polydomain films are calculated,
resulting from both the volume and domain-wall contributions. For BaTiO3 films,
strong dielectric anomalies are predicted at room temperature near special
values of the misfit strain.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figure
Introduction of organised mammography screening in tyrol: results of a one-year pilot phase
Background: Efficiency and efficacy of organised mammography screening programs have been proven in large randomised trials. But every local implementation of mammography screening has to check whether the well established quality standards are met. Therefore it was the aim of this study to analyse the most common quality indices after introducing organised mammography screening in Tyrol, Austria, in a smooth transition from the existing system of opportunistic screening. Methods: In June 2007, the system of opportunistic mammography screening in Tyrol was changed to an organised system by introducing a personal invitation system, a training program, a quality assurance program and by setting up a screening database. All procedures are noted in a written protocol. Most EU recommendations for organised mammography screening were followed, except double reading. All women living in Tyrol and covered by social insurance are now invited for a mammography, in age group 40-59 annually and in age group 60-69 biannually. Screening mammography is offered mainly by radiologists in private practice. We report on the results of the first year of piloting organised mammography screening in two counties in Tyrol. Results: 56,432 women were invited. Estimated participation rate was 34.5% at one year of follow-up (and 55.5% at the second year of follow-up); 3.4% of screened women were recalled for further assessment or intermediate screening within six months. Per 1000 mammograms nine biopsies were performed and four breast cancer cases detected (N = 68). Of invasive breast cancer cases 34.4% were ≤ 10 mm in size and 65.6% were node-negative. In total, six interval cancer cases were detected during one year of follow-up; this is 19% of the background incidence rate. Conclusions: In the Tyrolean breast cancer screening program, a smooth transition from a spontaneous to an organised mammography screening system was achieved in a short time and with minimal additional resources. One year after introduction of the screening program, most of the quality indicators recommended by the European guidelines had been reached. However, it will be necessary to introduce double reading, to change the rule for BI-RADS 3, and to concentrate on actions toward improving the participation rate
β-delayed neutron emission studies of i 137,138 and Cs 144,145 performed with trapped ions
A detailed study of the β-delayed neutron emission properties of I137,138 and Cs144,145 has been performed by confining ions in the Beta-decay Paul Trap. The daughter ions following β decay emerge from the trapped-ion cloud with negligible scattering allowing reconstruction of the recoil-ion energy from the time of flight. From this information, the neutron-emission branching ratios and neutron-energy spectra were deduced. The results for the I137 and Cs144,145 decays are in agreement with previous results performed using direct neutron-detection techniques. In the case of I138, a branching ratio of 6.18(50)% is obtained, yielding a value consistent with the more recent results, which are a factor of two larger than measurements made prior to 1978
Membrane transport proteins in human melanoma: associations with tumour aggressiveness and metastasis
BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma, generally described as incurable, is notoriously refractory to chemotherapy. The mechanisms contributing to this have not yet been defined and the contributions of drug efflux pumps, implicated in chemo-resistance of many other cancer types, have not been extensively investigated in melanoma.
METHODS: In this study, expression of multi-drug resistant (MDR1/P-gp and MRP-1) proteins was examined, by immunohistochemistry, in archival specimens from 134 melanoma patients. This included 92 primary tumours and 42 metastases.
RESULTS: On assessing all specimens, MRP-1 and MDR1/P-gp expression was found to be common, with the majority (81%) of melanomas expressing at least one of these efflux pumps. Although there is significant association between expression of these pumps (P=0.007), MRP-1 was found to be the predominant (67% of cases) form detected. chi(2) analysis showed significant associations between expression of MRP-1 and/or MDR1/P-gp and the aggressive nature of this disease specifically increased Breslow's depth, Clark's level and spread to lymph nodes. This association with aggressiveness and spread is further supported by the observation that a significantly higher percentage of metastases, than primary tumours, express MRP-1 (91% vs 57%; P<0.0001) and MDR1/P-gp (74% vs 50%; P=0.010).
CONCLUSION: The predominant expression of these pumps and, in particular, MRP-1 suggests that they may be important contributors to the inherent aggressive and resistant nature of malignant melanoma
