    On the timeliness of price discovery

    Price discovery is the process whereby value-relevant, private information becomes impounded or reflected in a stock's publicly-observable market price. The timeliness of price discovery refers to how quickly that process takes effect. There is no reason to believe either that all private information is discovered equally quickly or that price discovery is equally speedy for all firms. The latter observation suggests it would be worthwhile knowing why the timeliness of price discovery differs across firms, even the more so in an environment where all listed companies by law must disclose most material price-sensitive information as soon as they become aware of it. The other observation, that not all private information is discovered equally quickly, implies we should focus on a material, periodic event when we compare timeliness across firms. A good candidate is the announcement of the company's annual results, since for many years is has been known that annual earnings alone captures at least half the value-relevant information released by the average firm over the 12 months leading up to this date. We use various approaches to explore measures of timeliness and what they can tell us. We review a number of studies that have considered various aspects of timeliness in different countries and extend and contrast their findings. We also examine the relationship between the timeliness of price discovery and analogous measures based upon firms' formal disclosures to the share market and upon analysts' consensus earnings forecasts. Finally, we report on an issue of major concern to regulators and market operators, namely the influence of corporate governance on the timeliness of price discovery

    Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption investigations of the interaction of methanol with a graphite surface

    Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) have been used to investigate the adsorption of methanol (CH3OH) on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface. RAIRS shows that CH3OH is physisorbed at all exposures and that crystalline CH3OH can be formed, provided that the surface temperature and coverage are high enough. It is not possible to distinguish CH3OH that is closely associated with the HOPG surface from CH3OH adsorbed in multilayers using RAIRS. In contrast, TPD data show three peaks for the desorption of CH3OH. Initial adsorption leads to the observation of a peak assigned to the desorption of a monolayer. Subsequent adsorption leads to the formation of multilayers on the surface and two TPD peaks are observed which can be assigned to the desorption of multilayer CH3OH. The first of these shows a fractional order desorption, assigned to the presence of hydrogen bonding in the overlayer. The higher temperature multilayer desorption peak is only observed following very high exposures of CH3OH to the surface and can be assigned to the desorption of crystalline CH3OH.     Fundamental data on the desorption of pure interstellar ices

    The desorption of molecular ices from grain surfaces is important in a number of astrophysical environments including dense molecular clouds, cometary nuclei and the surfaces and atmospheres of some planets. With this in mind, we have performed a detailed investigation of the desorption of pure water, pure methanol and pure ammonia ices from a model dust-grain surface. We have used these results to determine the desorption energy, order of desorption and the pre-exponential factor for the desorption of these molecular ices from our model surface. We find good agreement between our desorption energies and those determined previously; however, our values for the desorption orders, and hence also the pre-exponential factors, are different to those reported previously. The kinetic parameters derived from our data have been used to model desorption on time-scales relevant to astrophysical processes and to calculate molecular residence times, given in terms of population half-life as a function of temperature. These results show the importance of laboratory data for the understanding of astronomical situations whereby icy mantles are warmed by nearby stars and by other dynamical events

    The STAT program was designed for the optimization of single rotation, tractor propfan designs. New propfan designs, however, generally consist of two counter rotating propfan rotors. STAT is constructed to contain two levels of analysis. An interior loop, consisting of accurate, efficient approximate analyses, is used to perform the primary propfan optimization. Once an optimum design has been obtained, a series of refined analyses are conducted. These analyses, while too computer time expensive for the optimization loop, are of sufficient accuracy to validate the optimized design. Should the design prove to be unacceptable, provisions are made for recalibration of the approximate analyses, for subsequent reoptimization

The first detection is reported of very hot S+ ions with gyrospeeds comparable to the corotations speed, a phenomenon which results from a neutral sulfur cloud. Evidence supports the hypothesis that extensive neutral clouds of oxygen and sulfur exist and are important sources of ions and energy for the Io torus
