    The z>4 Quasar Population Observed by Chandra and XMM-Newton

    The current status of our Chandra and XMM-Newton project on high-redshift (z>4) quasars is briefly reviewed.     Pressure and isotope effect on the anisotropy of MgB2_{2}

    We analyze the data for the pressure and boron isotope effect on the temperature dependence of the magnetization near TcT_{c}. Invoking the universal scaling relation for the magnetization at fixed magnetic field it is shown that the relative shift of TcT_{c}, induced by pressure or boron isotope exchange, mirrors essentially that of the anisotropy. This uncovers a novel generic property of anisotropic type II superconductors, inexistent in the isotropic case. For MgB2_{2} it implies that the renormalization of the Fermi surface topology due to pressure or isotope exchange is dominated by a mechanism controlling the anisotropy.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Comment on "Fano Resonance for Anderson Impurity Systems"

    In a recent Letter, Luo et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 256602 (2004)) analyze the Fano line shapes obtained from scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) of transition metal impurities on a simple metal surface, in particular of the Ti/Au(111) and Ti/Ag(100) systems. As the key point of their analysis, they claim that there is not only a Fano interference effect between the impurity d-orbital and the conduction electron continuum, as derived in Ujsaghy et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2557 (2000)), but that the Kondo resonance in the d-electron spectral density has by itself a second Fano line shape, leading to the experimentally observed spectra. In the present note we point out that this analysis is conceptually incorrect. Therefore, the quantitative agreement of the fitted theoretical spectra with the experimental results is meaningless.Comment: 1 page, no figures.     High Accuracy Near-infrared Imaging Polarimetry with NICMOS

    The findings of a nine orbit calibration plan carried out during HST Cycle 15, to fully determine the NICMOS camera 2 (2.0 micron) polarization calibration to high accuracy, are reported. Recently Ueta et al. and Batcheldor et al. have suggested that NICMOS possesses a residual instrumental polarization at a level of 1.2-1.5%. This would completely inhibit the data reduction in a number of GO programs, and hamper the ability of the instrument to perform high accuracy polarimetry. We obtained polarimetric calibration observations of three polarimetric standards at three spacecraft roll angles separated by ~60deg. Combined with archival data, these observations were used to characterize the residual instrumental polarization in order for NICMOS to reach its full potential of accurate imaging polarimetry at p~1%. Using these data, we place an 0.6% upper limit on the instrumental polarization and calculate values of the parallel transmission coefficients that reproduce the ground-based results for the polarimetric standards. The uncertainties associated with the parallel transmission coefficients, a result of the photometric repeatability of the observations, are seen to dominate the accuracy of p and theta. However, the updated coefficients do allow imaging polarimetry of targets with p~1.0% at an accuracy of +/-0.6% and +/-15deg.     User's guide for the Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet (SBUV) instrument first year ozone-S data set

    Total-ozone and ozone vertical profile results for Solar Backscattered Ultraviolet/Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (SBUV/TOMS) Nimbus 7 operation from November 1978 to November 1979 are available. The algorithm used have been thoroughly tested, the instrument performance has been examined in details, and the ozone results have been compared with Dobson, Umkehr, balloon, and rocket observations. The accuracy and precision of the satellite ozone data are good to at least within the ability of the ground truth to check and are self-consistent to within the specifications of the instrument. The 'SBUV User's Guide' describes the SBUV experiment and algorithms used. Detailed information on the data available on computer tape is provided including how to order tapes from the National Space Science Data Center
