    Factors predicting walking intolerance in patients with peripheral arterial disease(PAD) and intermittent claudication

    Objective. To determine which physiological variables conduce to walking intolerance in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Design. The physiological response to a graded treadmill exercise test (GTT) in patients with PAD was characterised. Setting. Patients were recruited from the Department of Vascular Surgery, Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. Subjects. Thirty-one patients diagnosed with PAD were included in the study. Outcome measures. During a GTT, peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), peak minute ventilation (VEpeak), peak heart rate and peak venous lactate concentrations were measured and compared with those from a comparison group. Anklebrachial index (ABI) was measured at rest and after exercise. During the GTT, maximum walking distance (MWD) and pain-free walking distance (PFWD) were measured to determine walking tolerance. Results. Peak venous lactate concentrations did not correlate significantly with either PFWD (r=–0.08; p=0.3) or MWD (r=–0.03; p=0.4).     Tensor Product Approximation (DMRG) and Coupled Cluster method in Quantum Chemistry

    We present the Copupled Cluster (CC) method and the Density matrix Renormalization Grooup (DMRG) method in a unified way, from the perspective of recent developments in tensor product approximation. We present an introduction into recently developed hierarchical tensor representations, in particular tensor trains which are matrix product states in physics language. The discrete equations of full CI approximation applied to the electronic Schr\"odinger equation is casted into a tensorial framework in form of the second quantization. A further approximation is performed afterwards by tensor approximation within a hierarchical format or equivalently a tree tensor network. We establish the (differential) geometry of low rank hierarchical tensors and apply the Driac Frenkel principle to reduce the original high-dimensional problem to low dimensions. The DMRG algorithm is established as an optimization method in this format with alternating directional search. We briefly introduce the CC method and refer to our theoretical results. We compare this approach in the present discrete formulation with the CC method and its underlying exponential parametrization.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

    Explicating the Face Perception Network with White Matter Connectivity

    A network of multiple brain regions is recruited in face perception. Our understanding of the functional properties of this network can be facilitated by explicating the structural white matter connections that exist between its functional nodes. We accomplished this using functional MRI (fMRI) in combination with fiber tractography on high angular resolution diffusion weighted imaging data. We identified the three nodes of the core face network: the "occipital face area" (OFA), the "fusiform face area" (mid-fusiform gyrus or mFus), and the superior temporal sulcus (STS). Additionally, a region of the anterior temporal lobe (aIT), implicated as being important for face perception was identified. Our data suggest that we can further divide the OFA into multiple anatomically distinct clusters - a partitioning consistent with several recent neuroimaging results. More generally, structural white matter connectivity within this network revealed: 1) Connectivity between aIT and mFus, and between aIT and occipital regions, consistent with studies implicating this posterior to anterior pathway as critical to normal face processing; 2) Strong connectivity between mFus and each of the occipital face-selective regions, suggesting that these three areas may subserve different functional roles; 3) Almost no connectivity between STS and mFus, or between STS and the other face-selective regions. Overall, our findings suggest a re-evaluation of the "core" face network with respect to what functional areas are or are not included in this network. © 2013 Pyles et al

    The hearing hippocampus

    The hippocampus has a well-established role in spatial and episodic memory but a broader function has been proposed including aspects of perception and relational processing. Neural bases of sound analysis have been described in the pathway to auditory cortex, but wider networks supporting auditory cognition are still being established. We review what is known about the role of the hippocampus in processing auditory information, and how the hippocampus itself is shaped by sound. In examining imaging, recording, and lesion studies in species from rodents to humans, we uncover a hierarchy of hippocampal responses to sound including during passive exposure, active listening, and the learning of associations between sounds and other stimuli. We describe how the hippocampus' connectivity and computational architecture allow it to track and manipulate auditory information – whether in the form of speech, music, or environmental, emotional, or phantom sounds. Functional and structural correlates of auditory experience are also identified. The extent of auditory-hippocampal interactions is consistent with the view that the hippocampus makes broad contributions to perception and cognition, beyond spatial and episodic memory. More deeply understanding these interactions may unlock applications including entraining hippocampal rhythms to support cognition, and intervening in links between hearing loss and dementia

    An Integrative Tinnitus Model Based on Sensory Precision.

    Tinnitus is a common disorder that often complicates hearing loss. Its mechanisms are incompletely understood. Current theories proposing pathophysiology from the ear to the cortex cannot individually - or collectively - explain the range of experimental evidence available. We propose a new framework, based on predictive coding, in which spontaneous activity in the subcortical auditory pathway constitutes a 'tinnitus precursor' which is normally ignored as imprecise evidence against the prevailing percept of 'silence'. Extant models feature as contributory mechanisms acting to increase either the intensity of the precursor or its precision. If precision (i.e., postsynaptic gain) rises sufficiently then tinnitus is perceived. Perpetuation arises through focused attention, which further increases the precision of the precursor, and resetting of the default prediction to expect tinnitus

    Spatio-temporal modelling of dam deformation using independent component analysis

    Modelling dam deformation based on monitoring data plays an important role in the assessment of a dam’s safety. Traditional dam deformation modelling methods generally utilise single monitoring point. It means it is necessary to model for each monitoring point and the spatial correlation between points will not be considered using traditional modelling methods. Spatio-temporal modelling methods provide a way to model the dam deformation with only one functional expression and analyse the stability of dam in its entirety. Independent component analysis (ICA) is a statistical method of blind source separation (BSS) and can separate original signals from mixed observables. In this paper, ICA is introduced as a spatio-temporal modelling method for dam deformation. In this method, the deformation data series of all points were processed using ICA as input signals, and a few output independent signals were used to model. The real data experiment with displacement measurements by wire alignment of Wuqiangxi Dam was conducted and the results show that the output independent signals are correlated with physical responses of causative factors such as temperature and water level respectively. This discovery is beneficial in analysing the dam deformation. In addition, ICA is also an effective dimension reduced method for spatio-temporal modelling in dam deformation analysis applications

    The Hagedorn spectrum and large NcN_c QCD in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions

    We show that a Hagedorn spectrum (i.e., spectrum where the number of hadrons grows exponentially with the mass) emerges automatically in large NcN_c QCD in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. The approach is based on the study of Euclidean space correlation functions for composite operators constructed from quark and gluon fields and exploits the fact that the short time behavior of the correlators is known in QCD. The demonstration relies on one critical assumption: that perturbation theory accurately describes the trace of the logarithm of a matrix of point-to-point correlation functions in the regime where the perturbative corrections to the asymptotically free value are small.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure

    Incidence and risk factors for influenza-like-illness in the UK: online surveillance using Flusurvey.

    BACKGROUND: Influenza and Influenza-like-illness (ILI) represents a substantial public health problem, but it is difficult to measure the overall burden as many cases do not access health care. Community cohorts have the advantage of not requiring individuals to present at hospitals and surgeries and therefore can potentially monitor a wider variety of cases. This study reports on the incidence and risk factors for ILI in the UK as measured using Flusurvey, an internet-based open community cohort. METHODS: Upon initial online registration participants were asked background characteristics, and every week were asked to complete a symptoms survey. We compared the representativeness of our sample to the overall population. We used two case definitions of ILI, which differed in whether fever/chills was essential. We calculated ILI incidence week by week throughout the season, and investigated risk factors associated with ever reporting ILI over the course of the season. Risk factor analysis was conducted using binomial regression. RESULTS: 5943 participants joined the survey, and 4532 completed the symptoms survey at least twice. Participants who filled in symptoms surveys at least twice filled in a median of nine symptoms surveys over the course of the study. 46.1% of participants reported at least one episode of ILI, and 6.0% of all reports were positive for ILI. Females had slightly higher incidence, and individuals over 65 had the lowest incidence. Incidence peaked just before Christmas and declined dramatically during school holidays. Multivariate regression showed that, for both definitions of ILI considered, being female, unvaccinated, having underlying health issues, having contact with children, being aged between 35 and 64, and being a smoker were associated with the highest risk of reporting an ILI. The use of public transport was not associated with an increased risk of ILI. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that internet based surveillance can be used to measure ILI and understand risk factors. Vaccination is shown to be linked to a reduced risk of reporting ILI. Taking public transport does not increase the risk of reporting ILI. Flusurvey and other participatory surveillance techniques can be used to provide reliable information to policy makers in nearly real-time

    Honey bee foraging distance depends on month and forage type

    To investigate the distances at which honey bee foragers collect nectar and pollen, we analysed 5,484 decoded waggle dances made to natural forage sites to determine monthly foraging distance for each forage type. Firstly, we found significantly fewer overall dances made for pollen (16.8 %) than for non-pollen, presumably nectar (83.2 %; P < 2.2 × 10−23). When we analysed distance against month and forage type, there was a significant interaction between the two factors, which demonstrates that in some months, one forage type is collected at farther distances, but this would reverse in other months. Overall, these data suggest that distance, as a proxy for forage availability, is not significantly and consistently driven by need for one type of forage over the other
