Robust Emergent Activity in Dynamical Networks
We study the evolution of a random weighted network with complex nonlinear
dynamics at each node, whose activity may cease as a result of interactions
with other nodes. Starting from a knowledge of the micro-level behaviour at
each node, we develop a macroscopic description of the system in terms of the
statistical features of the subnetwork of active nodes. We find the asymptotic
characteristics of this subnetwork to be remarkably robust: the size of the
active set is independent of the total number of nodes in the network, and the
average degree of the active nodes is independent of both the network size and
its connectivity. These results suggest that very different networks evolve to
active subnetworks with the same characteristic features. This has strong
implications for dynamical networks observed in the natural world, notably the
existence of a characteristic range of links per species across ecological
systems.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Parallel String Sample Sort
We discuss how string sorting algorithms can be parallelized on modern
multi-core shared memory machines. As a synthesis of the best sequential string
sorting algorithms and successful parallel sorting algorithms for atomic
objects, we propose string sample sort. The algorithm makes effective use of
the memory hierarchy, uses additional word level parallelism, and largely
avoids branch mispredictions. Additionally, we parallelize variants of multikey
quicksort and radix sort that are also useful in certain situations.Comment: 34 pages, 7 figures and 12 table
Study of wrap-rib antenna design
The results of a parametric design study conducted to develop the significant characteristics and technology limitations of space deployable antenna systems with aperture sizes ranging from 50 up to 300 m and F/D ratios between 0.5 and 3.0 are presented. Wrap/rib type reflectors of both the prime and offset fed geometry and associated feed support structures were considered. The significant constraints investigated as limitations on achievable aperture were inherent manufacturability, orbit dynamic and thermal stability, antenna weight, and antenna stowed volume. A data base, resulting in the defined maximum achievable aperture size as a function of diameter, frequency and estimated cost, was formed
Likelihood Non-Gaussianity in Large-Scale Structure Analyses
Standard present day large-scale structure (LSS) analyses make a major
assumption in their Bayesian parameter inference --- that the likelihood has a
Gaussian form. For summary statistics currently used in LSS, this assumption,
even if the underlying density field is Gaussian, cannot be correct in detail.
We investigate the impact of this assumption on two recent LSS analyses: the
Beutler et al. (2017) power spectrum multipole () analysis and the
Sinha et al. (2017) group multiplicity function () analysis. Using
non-parametric divergence estimators on mock catalogs originally constructed
for covariance matrix estimation, we identify significant non-Gaussianity in
both the and likelihoods. We then use Gaussian mixture density
estimation and Independent Component Analysis on the same mocks to construct
likelihood estimates that approximate the true likelihood better than the
Gaussian -likelihood. Using these likelihood estimates, we accurately
estimate the true posterior probability distribution of the Beutler et al.
(2017) and Sinha et al. (2017) parameters. Likelihood non-Gaussianity shifts
the constraint by , but otherwise, does not
significantly impact the overall parameter constraints of Beutler et al.
(2017). For the analysis, using the pseudo-likelihood significantly
underestimates the uncertainties and biases the constraints of Sinha et al.
(2017) halo occupation parameters. For and , the posteriors
are shifted by and and broadened by and
, respectively. The divergence and likelihood estimation methods we
present provide a straightforward framework for quantifying the impact of
likelihood non-Gaussianity and deriving more accurate parameter constraints.Comment: 33 pages, 7 figure
Modeling the Field Emission Current Fluctuation in Carbon Nanotube Thin Films
Owing to their distinct properties, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as
promising candidate for field emission devices. It has been found
experimentally that the results related to the field emission performance show
variability. The design of an efficient field emitting device requires the
analysis of the variabilities with a systematic and multiphysics based modeling
approach. In this paper, we develop a model of randomly oriented CNTs in a thin
film by coupling the field emission phenomena, the electron-phonon transport
and the mechanics of single isolated CNT. A computational scheme is developed
by which the states of CNTs are updated in time incremental manner. The device
current is calculated by using Fowler-Nordheim equation for field emission to
study the performance at the device scale.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Response to sub-threshold stimulus is enhanced by spatially heterogeneous activity
Sub-threshold stimuli cannot initiate excitations in active media, but
surprisingly as we show in this paper, they can alter the time-evolution of
spatially heterogeneous activity by modifying the recovery dynamics. This
results in significant reduction of waveback velocity which may lead to spatial
coherence, terminating all activity in the medium including spatiotemporal
chaos. We analytically derive model-independent conditions for which such
behavior can be observed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Seeing a c-theorem with holography
There is no known model in holography exhibiting a -theorem where the
central charges of the dual CFT are distinct. We examine a holographic model of
RG flows in a framework where the bulk gravity theory contains higher curvature
terms. The latter allows us to distinguish the flow of the central charges
and in the dual field theories in four dimensions. One finds that the flow
of is naturally monotonic but that of is not. Extending the analysis of
holographic RG flows to higher dimensions, we are led to formulate a novel
c-theorem in arbitrary dimensions for a universal coefficient appearing in the
entanglement entropy of the fixed point CFT's.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, v2: minor change
Linear independence of Gamma values in positive characteristic
We investigate the arithmetic nature of special values of Thakur's function
field Gamma function at rational points. Our main result is that all linear
independence relations over the field of algebraic functions are consequences
of the known relations of Anderson and Thakur arising from the functional
equations of the Gamma function.Comment: 51 page
