    We examine the question of adaptive firm conduct using longitudinal product-level data from three large horizontal mergers in the food manufacturing industry. Our model is grounded in a poststructural view of competition that we deduce from recent writings from the fields of strategy, organizational ecology, and industrial organization. Consistent with this model, we find that the influence of horizontal merger on product performance (i.e., rent) varies with the product niche, time, the specific firms that merged, and dominance of the product, and its market scope.Industrial Organization,

    Let −d-d be a a negative discriminant and let TT vary over a set of representatives of the integral equivalence classes of integral binary quadratic forms of discriminant −d-d. We prove an asymptotic formula for d→∞d \to \infty for the average over TT of the number of representations of TT by an integral positive definite quaternary quadratic form and obtain results on averages of Fourier coefficients of linear combinations of Siegel theta series. We also find an asymptotic bound from below on the number of binary forms of fixed discriminant −d-d which are represented by a given quaternary form. In particular, we can show that for growing dd a positive proportion of the binary quadratic forms of discriminant −d-d is represented by the given quaternary quadratic form.Comment: v5: Some typos correcte

The definitive version was published in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans 121 (2016): 6978–6992, doi:10.1002/2015JC011607.Hydrographic data from the Labrador Sea collected in February–March 1997, together with atmospheric reanalysis fields, are used to explore relationships between the air-sea fluxes and the observed mixed-layer depths. The strongest winds and highest heat fluxes occurred in February, due to the nature and tracks of the storms. While greater numbers of storms occurred earlier and later in the winter, the storms in February followed a more organized track extending from the Gulf Stream region to the Irminger Sea where they slowed and deepened. The canonical low-pressure system that drives convection is located east of the southern tip of Greenland, with strong westerly winds advecting cold air off the ice edge over the warm ocean. The deepest mixed layers were observed in the western interior basin, although the variability in mixed-layer depth was greater in the eastern interior basin. The overall trend in mixed-layer depth through the winter in both regions of the basin was consistent with that predicted by a 1-D mixed-layer model.     Molecular screening of microorganisms associated with discolored wood in dead European beech trees suffered from extreme drought event using next generation sequencing

    Drought events weaken trees and make them vulnerable to attacks by diverse plant pathogens. Here, we propose a molecular method for fast screening of microorganisms associated with European beech decline after an extreme drought period (2018) in a forest of Thuringia, Germany. We used Illumina sequencing with a recent bioinformatics approach based on DADA2 to identify archaeal, bacterial, and fungal ASVs (amplicon sequence variants) based on bacterial and archaeal 16S and fungal ITS genes. We show that symptomatic beech trees are associated with both bacterial and fungal plant pathogens. Although the plant pathogen sequences were detected in both discolored and non-discolored wood areas, they were highly enriched in the discolored wood areas. We show that almost each individual tree was associated with a different combination of pathogens. Cytospora spp. and Neonectria coccinea were among the most frequently detected fungal pathogens, whereas Erwinia spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were the dominant bacterial plant pathogens. We demonstrate that bacterial plant pathogens may be of major importance in beech decline

    Detailed balance in Horava-Lifshitz gravity

    We study Horava-Lifshitz gravity in the presence of a scalar field. When the detailed balance condition is implemented, a new term in the gravitational sector is added in order to maintain ultraviolet stability. The four-dimensional theory is of a scalar-tensor type with a positive cosmological constant and gravity is nonminimally coupled with the scalar and its gradient terms. The scalar field has a double-well potential and, if required to play the role of the inflation, can produce a scale-invariant spectrum. The total action is rather complicated and there is no analog of the Einstein frame where Lorentz invariance is recovered in the infrared. For these reasons it may be necessary to abandon detailed balance.
