    When people talk to each other, they express their feelings through facial expressions, tone of voice, body postures and gestures. They even do this when they are interacting with machines. These hidden signals are an important part of human communication, but most computer systems ignore them. Emotions need to be considered as an important mode of communication between people and interactive systems. Affective computing has enjoyed considerable success over the past 20 years, but many challenges remain.This is the author's accepted manuscript.     The environmental pollution by nitrogen losses from dairy farms can be reduced by improving the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of grass varieties. The main goal is to develop varieties with a better nitrogen utilisation. These low input varieties can produce acceptable yields at a low level of N-fertilisation. High input varieties express their high yield potential only at high N-supply. These varieties are less preferable, because N- losses increase at higher levels of nitrogen application. The breeding of CMS-F1-Hybrids can be a successful strategy for developing varieties with a higher NUE. In F1-Hybrid varieties higher heterosis effects can be achieved than in populations or synthetic varieties

    Veränderungen der Zustandsnährkraftstufe (SEA95) brandenburgischer Waldböden

    Im nordostdeutschen Standortserkundungsverfahren nach „SEA95“ (Schulze 1996) wird der chemische Oberbodenzustand von Waldstandorten durch eine integrierende Zustandsnährkraftstufe gekennzeichnet, welche sich anhand der aus dem C/N-Verhältnis abgeleiteten Stickstoffstufe und der aus pH-Wert bzw. Basensättigung ermittelten Basenstufe ergibt. Von Kopp & Schwanecke (1994) wurden „harmonische Relationen“ zwischen Säure-Basen- und Stickstoffstufen definiert, die sich in natürlichen Waldökosystemen unter Gleichgewichtsbedingungen von Standort und Vegetation einstellen würden. Disharmonische Oberbodenzustände waren in der Vergangenheit vor allem durch hohe atmogene Fremdstoffeinträge, insbesondere basische Staubeinträge aus der Braunkohleverbrennung in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren sowie Stickstoffdepositionen aus Landwirtschaft und Verkehr bedingt. Anhand der Daten der ersten und zweiten bundesweiten Bodenzustandserhebung im Wald (BZE-1: 1992, BZE-2: 2007) werden für das Land Brandenburg Zustandsnährkraftstufen vergleichend dargestellt und Veränderungen des Oberbodenzustandes erläutert. Die konstatierte Bodenversauerung bei gleichzeitig erweiterten C/N-Verhältnissen kann formal dahingehend gedeutet werden, dass sich im Zeitraum zwischen den Inventuren tendenziell wieder naturnähere Zustände eingestellt haben. Zur Zeit der BZE-1 konnte für 39 % der BZE-Stichprobe ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Säure- und Basenstufe konstatiert werden, bei der BZE-2 für 61 %. Die Fälle mit disharmonischen Relationen aufgrund von erhöhten Stickstoffwerten haben sich kaum verändert (BZE-1: 15 % der Punkte, BZE-2: 16 %). Deutlich hat indes die Zahl disharmonischer Verhältnisse aufgrund von erhöhten Basenstufen zwischen den Inventuren abgenommen (BZE-1: 46 %, BZE-2: 23 %)

    Founder events as determinants of within-island and among-island genetic structure of Daphnia metapopulations

    The genetic structure of metapopulations offers insights into the genetic consequences of local extinction and recolonization. We studied allozyme variation in rock pool metapopulations of two species of waterfleas (Daphnia) with the aim to understand how these dynamics influence genetic differentiation. We screened 138 populations of D. magna and 65 populations of D. longispina from an area in the archipelago of southern Finland. The pools from which they were sampled are separated by distances between 1.5 and 4710 m and located on a total of 38 islands. The genetic population structure of the two species was strikingly similar, consistent with their similar metapopulation ecology. The mean FPT value (differentiation among pools with respect to the total metapopulation) was 0.55 and a hierarchical analysis showed that genetic differentiation was strong (>0.25) among pools within islands as well as among whole islands. Within islands, pairwise genetic differentiation increased with geographic distance, indicating isolation by distance due to spatially limited dispersal. Previous studies have shown strong founder events occurring during colonization in our metapopulation. We suggest that the genetic population structure in the studied metapopulations is largely explained by three consequences of these founder events: (i) strong drift during colonization, (ii) local inbreeding, which results in hybrid vigour and increased effective migration rates after subsequent immigration, and (iii) effects of selection through hitchhiking of neutral genes with linked loci under selection

    Genetic diversity and genetic differentiation in Daphnia metapopulations with subpopulations of known age

    If colonization of empty habitat patches causes genetic bottlenecks, freshly founded, young populations should be genetically less diverse than older ones that may have experienced successive rounds of immigration. This can be studied in metapopulations with subpopulations of known age. We studied allozyme variation in metapopulations of two species of water fleas (Daphnia) in the skerry archipelago of southern Finland. These populations have been monitored since 1982. Screening 49 populations of D. longispina and 77 populations of D. magna, separated by distances of 1.5–2180 m, we found that local genetic diversity increased with population age whereas pairwise differentiation among pools decreased with population age. These patterns persisted even after controlling for several potentially confounding ecological variables, indicating that extinction and recolonization dynamics decrease local genetic diversity and increase genetic differentiation in these metapopulations by causing genetic bottlenecks during colonization. We suggest that the effect of these bottlenecks may be twofold, namely decreasing genetic diversity by random sampling and leading to population-wide inbreeding. Subsequent immigration then may not only introduce new genetic material, but also lead to the production of noninbred hybrids, selection for which may cause immigrant alleles to increase in frequency, thus leading to increased genetic diversity in older populations

    Debye mass and heavy quark potential in a PNJL quark plasma

    We calculate the Debye mass for the screening of the heavy quark potential in a plasma of massless quarks coupled to the temporal gluon background governed by the Polyakov loop potential within the PNJL model in RPA approximation. We give a physical motivation for a recent phenomenological fit of lattice data by applying the calculated Debye mass with its suppression in the confined phase due to the Polyakov-loop to a description of the temperature dependence of the singlet free energy for QCD with a heavy quark pair at infinite separation.     Medium Modifications of Hadron Properties and Partonic Processes

    Chiral symmetry is one of the most fundamental symmetries in QCD. It is closely connected to hadron properties in the nuclear medium via the reduction of the quark condensate , manifesting the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. To better understand this important issue, a number of Jefferson Lab experiments over the past decade have focused on understanding properties of mesons and nucleons in the nuclear medium, often benefiting from the high polarization and luminosity of the CEBAF accelerator. In particular, a novel, accurate, polarization transfer measurement technique revealed for the first time a strong indication that the bound proton electromagnetic form factors in 4He may be modified compared to those in the vacuum. Second, the photoproduction of vector mesons on various nuclei has been measured via their decay to e+e- to study possible in-medium effects on the properties of the rho meson. In this experiment, no significant mass shift and some broadening consistent with expected collisional broadening for the rho meson has been observed, providing tight constraints on model calculations. Finally, processes involving in-medium parton propagation have been studied. The medium modifications of the quark fragmentation functions have been extracted with much higher statistical accuracy than previously possible.Comment: to appear in J. Phys.: Conf. Proc.     Dynamics of Resonances in Strongly Interacting Systems

    The effects of the propagation of particles which have a finite life-time and an according broad distribution in their mass spectrum are discussed in the context of a transport descriptions. In the first part some example cases of mesonic modes in nuclear matter at finite densities and temperatures are presented. These equilibrium calculations illustrate the dynamical range of spectral distributions to be adequately covered by non-equilibrium description of the dynamics of two nuclei colliding at high energies. The second part addresses the problem of transport descriptions which properly account for the damping width of the particles. A systematic and general gradient approximation is presented in the form of diagrammatic rules which permit to derive a self-consistent transport scheme from the Kadanoff--Baym equation. The scheme is conserving and thermodynamically consistent provided the self-energies are obtained within the Phi-derivable two-particle irreducible (2PI) method of Baym.     Integrity of H1 helix in prion protein revealed by molecular dynamic simulations to be especially vulnerable to changes in the relative orientation of H1 and its S1 flank

    In the template-assistance model, normal prion protein (PrPC), the pathogenic cause of prion diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob (CJD) in human, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in cow, and scrapie in sheep, converts to infectious prion (PrPSc) through an autocatalytic process triggered by a transient interaction between PrPC and PrPSc. Conventional studies suggest the S1-H1-S2 region in PrPC to be the template of S1-S2 β\beta-sheet in PrPSc, and the conformational conversion of PrPC into PrPSc may involve an unfolding of H1 in PrPC and its refolding into the β\beta-sheet in PrPSc. Here we conduct a series of simulation experiments to test the idea of transient interaction of the template-assistance model. We find that the integrity of H1 in PrPC is vulnerable to a transient interaction that alters the native dihedral angles at residue Asn143^{143}, which connects the S1 flank to H1, but not to interactions that alter the internal structure of the S1 flank, nor to those that alter the relative orientation between H1 and the S2 flank.Comment: A major revision on statistical analysis method has been made.
