Spectral characteristics of dust in carbon rich objects

    Get PDF
Some carbon-rich objects exhibit a strong broad emission feature beginning at lambda is approximately 24 microns and extending to lambda is greater than 30 microns. A 20 to 65 microm spectrum of the carbon star IRC+10216 and 30 to 50 micron spectra of three carbon-rich planetary nebulae, IC 418, NGC 6572, and BD+30 degrees 3639 are presented. The strong emission feature around 30 microns is seen clearly in IRC+10216, IC 418, and NGC 6572. The role of silicon carbides and magnesium sulfur particles in this feature is discussed

A Case-Based Exploration of Task/Technology Fit in a Knowledge Management Context

    Get PDF
Task/Technology Fit (TTF) posits that as the intersection of the task domain and the capabilities of an information system (IS) increases in magnitude, the performance gains experienced by user through use of the IS will be positively impacted. While rooted in the traditional IS literature, this research proposes that TTF be extended to incorporate additional factors unique to the context of Knowledge Management (KM). Based upon the findings of this research, it is reasonable to conclude that when employing the TTF model to determine KMS fitness, additional factors other than the task requirements and KMS capabilities should be considered. This research also shows that the social ecology present within the organization has significant impacts on KMS fit. Finally, this research lends credibility to the idea that KMS are indeed a unique subset of IS and that traditional IS models (such as TTF) should reflect the unique social nature of KM

Contentious Engagement: Understanding Protest Participation in Latin American Democracies

    Get PDF
Why has protest participation seemingly exploded across much of Latin America in recent years? How do individual- and country-level characteristics interact to explain the rise of contentious politics in countries like Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela? I contend that the recent wave of protests in Latin America is the result of trends in community engagement and institutional development across the region\u27s young democracies. Specifically, I argue that low-quality institutions in democratic regimes push an increasingly large number of civically active Latin Americans toward more radical modes of political participation, as governments’ abilities to deliver on citizens’ expectations fail to match the capacity for mobilization of active democrats. Drawing on cross-national surveys of Latin America, I test this argument, finding that an interactive relationship between community engagement and ineffective political institutions helps explain the recent spike in protest activity in certain cases and the vast differences in protest participation observed throughout the region

The Poetry of Rafael Alberto Arrieta

    Get PDF
It is with the Post-Modernist group that we are concerned in this study, for it is in this direction that the poetry of Rafael Alberto Arrieta leads. The poetic expression of Arrieta is not, however, a conscious, deliberate rebellion against Modernism. Arrieta was born in the 1889; he therefore grew up under the influence of Modernism. The most formative years of his life were spent while Modernism dominated the world of poetry. Yet Arrieta had the literary integrity to express his own personality in spite of the prevailing influences

A MIXED-INTEGER PROGRAMMING ANALYSIS OF THE STRUCTURE OF A FLORIDA-BASED CATTLE FEEDING INDUSTRY

    Get PDF
Florida is typical of many southeastern states in that it exports feeder cattle and imports carcass and boxed beef. The objective of this paper is to estimate the cost of retaining feeder cattle in Florida, feeding these cattle to slaughter weights, slaughtering them, and distributing the meat to retail outlets. A mixed integer programming model is developed. The optimal number and location of feedlots and slaughter plants are determined. The results indicate that at production levels exceeding 600,000 head, the cost of producing carcass beef in the State is comparable to the average for the United States.Livestock Production/Industries,
