SLIPPERY SLOPE ? ASSESSING THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF THE 2002 WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES IN SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH

    Get PDF
This paper provides an empirical examination of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our analysis of taxable sales in the counties in which Olympic events took place finds that some sectors such as hotels and restaurants prospered while other retailers such as general merchandisers and department stores suffered. Overall the gains in the hospitality industry are lower than the losses experienced by other sectors in the economy. Given the experience of Utah, potential Olympic hosts should exercise caution before proceeding down the slippery slope of bidding for this event.OLYMPICS, IMPACT ANALYSIS, MEGA-EVENT

SweetSpot: Near-Infrared Observations of Thirteen Type Ia Supernovae from a New NOAO Survey Probing the Nearby Smooth Hubble Flow

We present 13 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) observed in the restframe near-infrared (NIR) from 0.02 < z < 0.09 with the WIYN High-resolution Infrared Camera (WHIRC) on the WIYN 3.5-m telescope. With only 1-3 points per light curve and a prior on the time of maximum from the spectrum used to type the object we measure an H-band dispersion of spectroscopically normal SNe Ia of 0.164 mag. These observations continue to demonstrate the improved standard brightness of SNe Ia in H-band even with limited data. Our sample includes two SNe Ia at z ~ 0.09, which represent the most distant restframe NIR H-band observations published to date. This modest sample of 13 NIR SNe Ia represent the pilot sample for "SweetSpot" - a three-year NOAO Survey program that will observe 144 SNe Ia in the smooth Hubble flow. By the end of the survey we will have measured the relative distance to a redshift of z ~ 0.05 to 1%. Nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observations such as these will test the standard nature of SNe Ia in the restframe NIR, allow insight into the nature of dust, and provide a critical anchor for future cosmological SN Ia surveys at higher redshift.Comment: 36 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to Ap

Use of Movable Beam Position Monitors for Beam Size Measurements

    Get PDF
The use of beam position monitors (BPMs) as non-intercepting emittance monitors has been proposed in 1983 by Miller et al. The emittance measurement relies on the beam size dependency of the BPM signals. It is shown that the original proposal can be improved by using movable BPMs. Changing the BPM position with a stepping motor allows accurately calibrating the beam size measurement. The absolute scale on the beam size measurement is given by the scale of the stepping motor and can be determined in the laboratory and measured in situ. Uncontrolled changes of the beam position can be monitored through the use of a BPM triplet

Core Stabilization Exercise Prescription, Part I: Current Concepts in Assessment and Intervention

Context: Injury to the low back can cause significant pain and dysfunction, which can affect an athlete’s performance and result in time lost from sport. A common conservative treatment is therapeutic core stabilization exercises, which can address pain and musculoskeletal dysfunction in patients with low back pathology. Evidence Acquisition: MEDLINE and CINAHL were searched (from 1966 to March 2013) to identify relevant research. Keywords and keyword combinations searched included motor control exercise, segmental stabilization, core stabilization, transversus abdominis, multifidi, and low back pain. Results: There are 2 popular rehabilitation strategies to assess core function and promote core stabilization. Each has been developed based on biomechanical models of lumbar segmental stability and observed motor control dysfunction in patients with low back pain. Conclusion: Controversy exists among clinical and research groups as to the optimal strategy for an athlete with low back pain
