A Radio Transient 0.1 pc from Sagittarius A*
We report the discovery of a transient radio source 2.7 arcsec (0.1 pc
projected distance) South of the Galactic Center massive black hole,
Sagittarius A*. The source flared with a peak of at least 80 mJy in March 2004.
The source was resolved by the Very Large Array into two components with a
separation of ~0.7 arcsec and characteristic sizes of ~0.2 arcsec. The two
components of the source faded with a power-law index of 1.1 +/- 0.1. We detect
an upper limit to the proper motion of the Eastern component of ~3 x 10^3 km
s^-1 relative to Sgr A*. We detect a proper motion of ~10^4 km s^-1 for the
Western component relative to Sgr A*. The transient was also detected at X-ray
wavelengths with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the XMM-Newton telescope and
given the designation CXOGC J174540.0-290031. The X-ray source falls in between
the two radio components. The maximum luminosity of the X-ray source is ~10^36
erg s^-1, significantly sub-Eddington. The radio jet flux density predicted by
the X-ray/radio correlation for X-ray binaries is orders of magnitude less than
the measured flux density. We conclude that the radio transient is the result
of a bipolar jet originating in a single impulsive event from the X-ray source
and interacting with the dense interstellar medium of the Galactic Center.Comment: accepted in ApJ; 24 pages; 8 figure
Correspondence between Jordan-Einstein frames and Palatini-metric formalisms
We discuss the conformal symmetry between Jordan and Einstein frames
considering their relations with the metric and Palatini formalisms for
modified gravity. Appropriate conformal transformations are taken into account
leading to the evident connection between the gravitational actions in the two
mentioned frames and the Hilbert-Einstein action with a cosmological constant.
We show that the apparent differences between Palatini and metric formalisms
strictly depend on the representation while the number of degrees of freedom is
preserved. This means that the dynamical content of both formalism is
identical.Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Mod. Phys. Lett.

Discovery of New Interacting Supernova Remnants in the Inner Galaxy
OH(1720 MHz) masers are excellent signposts of interaction between supernova
remnants(SNRs) and molecular clouds. Using the GBT and VLA we have surveyed 75
SNRs and six candidates for maser emission. Four new interacting SNRs are
detected with OH masers: G5.4-1.2, G5.7-0.0, G8.7-0.1 and G9.7-0.0. The newly
detected interacting SNRs G5.7-0.0 and G8.7-0.1 have TeV gamma-ray counterparts
which may indicate a local cosmic ray enhancement. It has been noted that
maser-emitting SNRs are preferentially distributed in the Molecular Ring and
Nuclear Disk. We use the present and existing surveys to demonstrate that
masers are strongly confined to within 50 degrees Galactic longitude at a rate
of 15 percent of the total SNR population. All new detections are within 10
degrees Galactic longitude emphasizing this trend. Additionally, a substantial
number of SNR masers have peak fluxes at or below the detection threshold of
existing surveys. This calls into question whether maser surveys of Galactic
SNRs can be considered complete and how many maser-emitting remnants remain to
be detected in the Galaxy.Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letters, with 2 figures and 2 table
Quantum Mechanics of Proca Fields
We construct the most general physically admissible positive-definite inner
product on the space of Proca fields. Up to a trivial scaling this defines a
five-parameter family of Lorentz invariant inner products that we use to
construct a genuine Hilbert space for the quantum mechanics of Proca fields. If
we identify the generator of time-translations with the Hamiltonian, we obtain
a unitary quantum system that describes first-quantized Proca fields and does
not involve the conventional restriction to the positive-frequency fields. We
provide a rather comprehensive analysis of this system. In particular, we
examine the conserved current density responsible for the conservation of the
probabilities, explore the global gauge symmetry underlying the conservation of
the probabilities, obtain a probability current density, construct position,
momentum, helicity, spin, and angular momentum operators, and determine the
localized Proca fields. We also compute the generalized parity (\cP),
generalized time-reversal (\cT), and generalized charge or chirality (\cC)
operators for this system and offer a physical interpretation for its
\cP\cT-, \cC-, and \cC\cP\cT-symmetries.Comment: Published version, typos fixed, a change in symbol, 1 fi
