    Portable remote laser sensor for methane leak detection

    A portable laser system for remote detection of methane gas leaks and concentrations is disclosed. The system transmitter includes first and second lasers, tuned respectively to a wavelength coincident with a strong absorption line of methane and a reference wavelength which is weakly absorbed by methane gas. The system receiver includes a spherical mirror for collecting the reflected laser radiation and focusing the collected radiation through a narrowband optical filter onto an optial detector. The filter is tuned to the wavelength of the two lasers, and rejects background noise. The output of the optical detector is processed by a lock-in detector synchronized to the chopper, and which measures the difference between the first wavelength signal and the reference wavelength signal

    X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigation of the mixed anion GaSb/InAs heterointerface

    X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to measure levels of anion cross-incorporation and to study interface formation for the mixed anion GaSb/lnAs heterojunction. Anion cross-incorporation was measured in 20 Å thick GaSb layers grown on lnAs, and 20 Å thick InAs layers grown on GaSb for cracked and uncracked sources. It was found that significantly less anion cross-incorporation occurs in structures grown with cracked sources. Interface formation was investigated by studying Sb soaks of InAs surfaces and As soaks of GaSb surfaces as a function of cracker power and soak time. Exchange of the group V surface atoms was found to be an increasing function of both cracker power and soak time. We find that further optimization of current growth parameters may be possible by modifying the soak time used at interfaces

    Study of interface asymmetry in InAs–GaSb heterojunctions

    We present reflection high energy electron diffraction, secondary ion mass spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy and x‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies of the abruptness of InAs–GaSb interfaces. We find that the interface abruptness depends on growth order: InAs grown on GaSb is extended, while GaSb grown on InAs is more abrupt. We first present observations of the interfacial asymmetry, including measurements of band alignments as a function of growth order. We then examine more detailed studies of the InAs–GaSb interface to determine the mechanisms causing the extended interface. Our results show that Sb incorporation into the InAs overlayer and As exchange for Sb in the GaSb underlayer are the most likely causes of the interfacial asymmetry

    Two interpretations of ways in which group politics in Britain have presented challenges to democracy are reviewed: neo-corporatism or pluralistic stagnation and the rise of single issue interest groups. The disappearance of the first paradigm created a political space for the second to emerge. A three-phase model of group activity is developed: a phase centred around production interests, followed by the development of broadly based 'other regarding' groups, succeeded by fragmented, inner directed groups focusing on particular interests. Explanations of the decay of corporatism are reviewed. Single issue group activity has increased as party membership has declined and is facilitated by changes in traditional media and the development of the internet. Such groups can overload the policy-making process and frustrate depoliticisation. Debates about the constitution and governance have largely ignored these issues and there is need for a debate

    MARINE CORPS OFFICER ATTITUDES TOWARD THE REPEAL OF "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL"

    "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT) prohibited gays from serving openly in the military from December 1993 to September 2011. The present study, conducted over one year after DADTs repeal, utilized a survey of attitudes toward DADT that was previously administered to Marine Corps officers at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in 1999, 2004, and 2010. This survey, re-administered to NPS Marine officers in November 2012, addressed the following areas policy, cohesion, leadership, tolerance, unit effectiveness, and military readiness. A comparison of results from the four surveys shows a clear trend of increasing acceptance toward homosexuals in the military. Levels of acceptance tended to vary by Military Occupational Specialty and length of service. Additionally, many Marine officers continued to express concern about habitability and personal comfort. These and other issues were further explored with Marine officers in three focus-group sessions. Overall, study results indicated strong agreement that the current policy protects the rights of all Marines, regardless of sexual orientation. Finally, Marine officers expressed confidence that the training they received adequately prepared them to execute the repeal of DADT.     Adaptive versus non-adaptive strategies for quantum channel discrimination

    We provide a simple example that illustrates the advantage of adaptive over non-adaptive strategies for quantum channel discrimination. In particular, we give a pair of entanglement-breaking channels that can be perfectly discriminated by means of an adaptive strategy that requires just two channel evaluations, but for which no non-adaptive strategy can give a perfect discrimination using any finite number of channel evaluations.Comment: 11 page

    Distances to the high galactic latitude molecular clouds G192-67 and MBM 23-24

    We report on distance determinations for two high Galactic latitude cloud complexes, G192-67 and MBM 23-24. No distance determination exists in the literature for either cloud. Thirty-four early type stars were observed towards the two clouds, more than half of which have parallaxes measured by the Hipparcos satellite. For the remaining stars we have made spectroscopic distance estimates. The data consist of high resolution echelle spectra centered on the Na I D lines, and were obtained over six nights at the Coude Feed telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory. Interstellar absorption lines were detected towards some of the stars, enabling estimates of the distances to the clouds of 109 +/- 14 pc for G192-67, and of 139 +/- 33 pc for MBM 23-24. We discuss the relationship of these clouds to other ISM features such as the Local Hot Bubble and the local cavity in neutral hydrogen.Comment: 15 pages, 6 embedded figures, to be published in the ApJ Vol. 516, No.
