    Acoustic transducer apparatus with reduced thermal conduction

    A horn is described for transmitting sound from a transducer to a heated chamber containing an object which is levitated by acoustic energy while it is heated to a molten state, which minimizes heat transfer to thereby minimize heating of the transducer, minimize temperature variation in the chamber, and minimize loss of heat from the chamber. The forward portion of the horn, which is the portion closest to the chamber, has holes that reduce its cross-sectional area to minimize the conduction of heat along the length of the horn, with the entire front portion of the horn being rigid and having an even front face to efficiently transfer high frequency acoustic energy to fluid in the chamber. In one arrangement, the horn has numerous rows of holes extending perpendicular to the length of horn, with alternate rows extending perpendicular to one another to form a sinuous path for the conduction of heat along the length of the horn

    A corrugated horn antenna, adapted to be coupled to a waveguide at its apex for X-band excitation is further adapted to be connected to waveguides through a circumferential slot for S-band excitation at four distinct phases selected for the desired S-band polarization. The circumferential slot is positioned along the axial length of the horn for good impedance matching and is provided with an X-band choke in the form of two concentric choke slots. For further improvement in impedance matching, the second (outer) choke slot is divided by plugs into four segments that coincide with waveguide ports for the four distinct phases of the S-band

    It was argued in literature that traversable wormholes can exist with arbitrarily small violation of null energy conditions. We show that if the amount of exotic material near the wormhole throat tends to zero, either this leads to a horn instead of a wormhole or the throat approaches the horizon in such a way that infnitely large stresses develop on the throat.Comment: 12 pages.     W-band quasi-optical mode converters for gyro-devices

    A W-band corrugated horn has been designed, manufactured, and experimentally measured at the University of Strathclyde, for integration into a gyro-device as a quasi-optical launcher. This horn converts a cylindrical TE11 mode into a free space TEM00 mode in a frequency band of 84-104 GHz with a reflection better than-30 dB and a Gaussian coupling efficiency of ∼98% and directivity of 26.6 dB at 95 GHz. The Gaussian output of the horn and small beam waist makes such a horn ideal for integration with applications and for use with a depressed collector system. The measured results are in excellent agreement with the numerical simulations

    The Parallel Manipulation Argument

    Matt King has recently argued that the manipulation argument against compatibilism does not succeed by employing a dilemma: either the argument infelicitously relies on incompatibilist sourcehood conditions, or the proponent of the argument leaves a premise of the argument undefended. This article develops a reply to King’s dilemma by showing that incompatibilists can accept its second horn. Key to King’s argument for the second horn’s being problematic is “the parallel manipulation argument.” I argue that King’s use of this argument is problematic, but I suggest that a (modified) parallel manipulation argument is effective for a different, though more restricted, purpose

    3D printed horn antenna using direct metal laser melting technique for millimetre wave applications

    A 3D printed horn antenna at ka-band is presented in this paper. The horn antenna is well known for high gain performance. The performance of the horn antenna manufactured using 3D printed technology is investigated in this work. The horn is designed based on WR-28 waveguide standard. The proposed horn is simulated by computer simulation technology (CST) software and fabricated using 3D printing direct metal laser melting technique. The 3D printing technique gives the antenna an advantage of being not just rapid manufactured but also low-cost and lightweight. However, several works reported on 3D printed devices highlight the effects of surface roughness and dimensional tolerance on the performances. Therefore, the printed horn is profiled to correlate the surface roughness and dimension tolerance towards the performance. The printed horn is measured using standard VNA. The results showed that the measured performance agreed fairly with the simulation with directive radiation pattern at 15 dBi gain. The printed horn has a weight of less than 130g and considerably working at Ka band regardless of the surface roughness resulted from the fabrication process
