    Coding for Racetrack Memories

Racetrack memory is a new technology which utilizes magnetic domains along a nanoscopic wire in order to obtain extremely high storage density. In racetrack memory, each magnetic domain can store a single bit of information, which can be sensed by a reading port (head). The memory has a tape-like structure which supports a shift operation that moves the domains to be read sequentially by the head. In order to increase the memory's speed, prior work studied how to minimize the latency of the shift operation, while the no less important reliability of this operation has received only a little attention. In this work we design codes which combat shift errors in racetrack memory, called position errors. Namely, shifting the domains is not an error-free operation and the domains may be over-shifted or are not shifted, which can be modeled as deletions and sticky insertions. While it is possible to use conventional deletion and insertion-correcting codes, we tackle this problem with the special structure of racetrack memory, where the domains can be read by multiple heads. Each head outputs a noisy version of the stored data and the multiple outputs are combined in order to reconstruct the data. Under this paradigm, we will show that it is possible to correct, with at most a single bit of redundancy, dd deletions with d+1d+1 heads if the heads are well-separated. Similar results are provided for burst of deletions, sticky insertions and combinations of both deletions and sticky insertions

peer reviewedA study was carried out on 168 heads of broiler chicken (Ho x Luong Phuong) from 5 to 12 weeks of age to measure the effect of red worm meal (Perionyx excavatus) used as a rich protein feed in the diet on growth performance, feed conversion and meat quality. Based on a completely randomized design, chickens were divided into four groups, involving a control group and three experimental groups corresponding to three levels of red worm meal, viz 8 and 6g/kg of feed (level 1), 13 and 10g/kg of feed (level 2), 18 and 14 g/kg of feed (level 3) according to two respectively growth periods of chicken (from 5 to 8 weeks of age and from 9 to 12 weeks of age. The results showed that supplementation of redworm meal with level 3 in the diets resulted in higher growth rate (P<0.05), lower feed consumption (reducing by 0.53 kg of feed/kg of weight gain, equal to 13.8%) and more improved of yellowness value (P<0.05) than those of control group. Adding redworm to chicken’s diets didn’t affect significantly other characteristics of meat quality (pH, drip and cooking loss, L* and a* values). If cost of worm is not calculated, feed price and feed cost per each kilogram of weight gain in group 3 will be reduced by 287 VND/kg and 4278 VND/kg, corresponding to 4.51% and 17.47% as compared with those of control one

What is Business Process Automation Anyway?

    Get PDF
Many organizations strive to increase the level of automation in their business processes. While automation historically was mainly concerned with automating physical labor, current automation efforts mostly focus on automation in a digital manner, thus targeting work that is related to the interaction between humans and computers. This type of automation, commonly referred to as business process automation, has many facets. Yet, academic literature mainly focuses on Robotic Process Automation, a specific automation capability. Recognizing that leading vendors offer automation capabilities going way beyond that, we use this paper to develop a detailed understanding of business process automation in industry. To this end, we conduct a structured market analysis of the 18 predominant vendors of business process automation solutions as identified by Gartner. As a result, we provide a comprehensive overview of the business process automation capabilities currently offered by industrial vendors. We show which types and facets of automation exist and which aspects represent promising directions for the future

DEFEG: deep ensemble with weighted feature generation.

With the significant breakthrough of Deep Neural Networks in recent years, multi-layer architecture has influenced other sub-fields of machine learning including ensemble learning. In 2017, Zhou and Feng introduced a deep random forest called gcForest that involves several layers of Random Forest-based classifiers. Although gcForest has outperformed several benchmark algorithms on specific datasets in terms of classification accuracy and model complexity, its input features do not ensure better performance when going deeply through layer-by-layer architecture. We address this limitation by introducing a deep ensemble model with a novel feature generation module. Unlike gcForest where the original features are concatenated to the outputs of classifiers to generate the input features for the subsequent layer, we integrate weights on the classifiers’ outputs as augmented features to grow the deep model. The usage of weights in the feature generation process can adjust the input data of each layer, leading the better results for the deep model. We encode the weights using variable-length encoding and develop a variable-length Particle Swarm Optimisation method to search for the optimal values of the weights by maximizing the classification accuracy on the validation data. Experiments on a number of UCI datasets confirm the benefit of the proposed method compared to some well-known benchmark algorithms

    Get PDF
    (1) Background: Improved surgical techniques and implants in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have led to broader indications for surgical interventions of osteoarthritis of the knee. There is a growing young and active patient subgroup with high return to sports (RTS) expectations after TKA. The current lack of evidence regarding RTS capacity in this patient cohort, requires the consolidation of experts' opinions and experiences to address the special needs among these patients. The aim of this study was to assess current expert opinions in regard to preoperative patient assessment, surgical technique and decision-making and patient counseling for these patients. (2) Methods: We performed a survey among surgeons specialized in arthroplasty with a questionnaire designed to assess current recommendations, surgical techniques, and implant preferences as well as patient counseling in patients with high expectations for RTS after TKA. (3) Results: The majority of surgeons are in favor of return to low-impact sports after TKA within 3 to 6 months. Some even recommend return to high-impact sports. Despite improvement of surgical techniques and implants, we observed no clear preference for a single surgical technique or implant specification in active patients. (4) Conclusions: Current evidence for sports-associated complications after TKA is scarce. Despite a growing array of surgical techniques and implants, the available literature is still controversial with no single surgical technique or TKA design distinguishing itself clearly from others. Surgeons' recommendations are mostly based on their experience and training. Nonetheless, we observed growing faith in modern implants with some surgeons even recommending high-impact sports after TKA

Comparison of Vaginal Misoprostol and Oral Misoprostol for promoting Cervical Ripening and Inducing labor

    Get PDF
Background: Labor induction is the stimulation of the uterus to contract before labor begins to have a vaginal birth through the use of medications. Labor induction in the later stages of pregnancy is used to prevent complications when the mother or baby is at risk. Medications such as misoprostol (Cytotec) are used in inductions for cervical ripening to allow smoother dilation. Ripening the cervix is a method used to help soften and thin out the cervix to facilitate childbirth. The benefit of using misoprostol is that it can be administered several routes including oral, vaginal, sublingual and buccal. Induction of labor is a life-saving intervention that can reduce adverse outcomes. Purpose: This systematic literature review aims to determine the most effective route of administration of misoprostol to successfully induce labor in term pregnant women. Methods: The PRISMA flow diagram was followed to obtain results. A literature search was conducted using resources including PubMed and EBSCO Information Services as well as specific internet searches. Filters were applied to limit retrievals to only randomized control trials, controlled clinical trials, and experimental studies. Other inclusion criteria were the administration of oral misoprostol, vaginal misoprostol, buccal misoprostol, or sublingual misoprostol, a non-scarred uterus, gestational weeks ≥ 37, English language, and healthcare data from the year 2017 to present. The Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice Model was used for an appraisal process to select twenty articles to be used in our review. Preliminary results suggest the vaginal route is more effective than oral misoprostol in performing successful labor inductions in the shortest amount of time. Results: Final results will be presented at the symposiu

The influences of the number of concrete dowels to shear resistance based on push out tests

    Get PDF
To reduce the depth of floor-beam structures and to save the cost of headed-shear studs, many types of shallow composite beam have been developed during the last few years. Among them, the shallow-hollow steel beam consists of web openings, infilled with in-situ concrete (named concrete dowel) has been increasingly focused recently. In this new kind of structure, this concrete dowel plays an important role as the principal shear connector. This article presents an investigation on the shear transferring mechanism and failure behavior of the trapezoid shape concrete dowel. An experimental campaign of static push-out tests has been conducted with variability in the number of web openings (WOs). The results indicate that the mechanical behavior of concrete dowel could be divided into crushing, compression, and tension zones and exhibits brittle behavior. The longitudinal shear resistance and specimen's stiffness are strongly affected by the number of considered WO

Hierarchical Motion Planning and Offline Robust Model Predictive Control for Autonomous Vehicles

Driving vehicles in complex scenarios under harsh conditions is the biggest challenge for autonomous vehicles (AVs). To address this issue, we propose hierarchical motion planning and robust control strategy using the front-active steering system in complex scenarios with various slippery road adhesion coefficients while considering vehicle uncertain parameters. Behaviors of human vehicles (HVs) are considered and modeled in the form of a car-following model via the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM). Then, in the upper layer, the motion planner first generates an optimal trajectory by using the artificial potential field (APF) algorithm to formulate any surrounding objects, e.g., road marks, boundaries, and static/dynamic obstacles. To track the generated optimal trajectory, in the lower layer, an offline-constrained output feedback robust model predictive control (RMPC) is employed for the linear parameter varying (LPV) system by applying linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization method that ensures the robustness against the model parameter uncertainties. Furthermore, by augmenting the system model, our proposed approach, called offline RMPC, achieves outstanding efficiency compared to three existing RMPC approaches, e.g., offset-offline RMPC, online RMPC, and offline RMPC without an augmented model (offline RMPC w/o AM), in both improving computing time and reducing input vibrations.Comment: 6 pages, 9 illustrations, Accepted for publication in American Control Conference (ACC) 202

Dynamics of Agrarian Systems and Land Use Change in North Vietnam

peer reviewedDuring the period of socio-economic transformation initiated in the late 1980s by the political reform (Doi Moi) in Vietnam, the agrarian systems evolved considerably. In the region around the capital, where the process of industrialization, urbanization, and international integration has been accelerating, a number of questions about the sustainability of those agrarian systems have been raised. By diagnosing and analysing the dynamics of the agricultural systems in Vietnam from 1980 to 2010, this study aims to provide decision-makers with some sectorial and territorial policy options that are able to authorize the sustainable development of agriculture and rural society in the new socio-economic context. By applying a systematic approach, including the historical and adaptive approaches, this study shows how well farmers in the Hai Duong province have adapted to socio-economic and institutional changes, notably by transforming part of their paddy farms into other agricultural land use purposes, such as fish ponds, animal buildings, vegetable fields, and fruit orchards. These rapid changes, however, do not move in a direction that improves the sustainability of agrarian systems. The results revealed that farm holders are now facing many technical and economic contradictions, whereas issues that arise from the land no longer are only related to agricultural purposes. Competition for different functions of land use are now emerging, along with the fragmentation of plots, an imperfect land market, and rising property values are all emerging. The prospect of the sustainability of agricultural systems was also analysed under different scenarios, highlighting the complexity of policy options
