Determinants of intention to get tested for STI/HIV among the Surinamese and Antilleans in the Netherlands: Results of an online survey
Background: High infection rates of STIs are found among the different ethnic communities living in the Netherlands, especially among the Surinamese and Dutch-Antilleans. Only limited effective interventions that promote STI/HIV testing among these communities are available in the Netherlands. In the present study we identified the determinants of the intention to get tested for STI/HIV of the sexually active Surinamese and Dutch-Antilleans living in the Netherlands. Secondly, this study assesses which determinants should be addressed when promoting STI/HIV testing among these communities. Methods. In total, 450 Surinamese and 303 Dutch-Antillean respondents were recruited through Dutch Internet panels and group activities. The questionnaire used in the online survey was based on the concepts of the Health Belief Model, the Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned behavior. To correct for multiple outcome testing, we considered differences as statistically significant at p<.01 for all analyses. For the multivariate linear regression analysis, variables that were significant were entered into the model block-wise. Results: Health motivation, cues to action, subjective norms, risk behavior, test history, open communication about sexuality, and marital status were important (univariate) predictors of the intention to get tested for STI/HIV for both the Surinamese and Dutch-Antillean respondents. For both the Surinamese and Dutch-Antilleans, subjective norms were the most salient predictor of the intention to get tested in multivariate analyses, explaining 10% and 13% of the variance respectively; subjective norms had a direct influence on the intention for both the Surinamese and the Dutch-Antilleans. Conclusions: The strong correlation and predictive power of subjective norms on the intention to get tested for STI/HIV, endorses the importance of focusing on community-based intervention rather than focusing on personal determinants, to change the present perceptions and attitudes towards testing. Health promoting programs should be aimed at promoting open communication regarding sexuality and testing. Stimulating each other to get tested frequently could also help achieving the desired behavior
Quantification of Methylated Selenium, Sulfur, and Arsenic in the Environment
Biomethylation and volatilization of trace elements may contribute to their redistribution in the environment. However, quantification of volatile, methylated species in the environment is complicated by a lack of straightforward and field-deployable air sampling methods that preserve element speciation. This paper presents a robust and versatile gas trapping method for the simultaneous preconcentration of volatile selenium (Se), sulfur (S), and arsenic (As) species. Using HPLC-HR-ICP-MS and ESI-MS/MS analyses, we demonstrate that volatile Se and S species efficiently transform into specific non-volatile compounds during trapping, which enables the deduction of the original gaseous speciation. With minor adaptations, the presented HPLC-HR-ICP-MS method also allows for the quantification of 13 non-volatile methylated species and oxyanions of Se, S, and As in natural waters. Application of these methods in a peatland indicated that, at the selected sites, fluxes varied between 190–210 ng Se·m-2·d-1, 90–270 ng As·m-2·d-1, and 4–14 µg S·m-2·d-1, and contained at least 70% methylated Se and S species. In the surface water, methylated species were particularly abundant for As (>50% of total As). The values of ion-atom ionization cross sections are frequently needed for
many applications that utilize the propagation of fast ions through matter.
When experimental data and theoretical calculations are not available,
approximate formulas are frequently used. This paper briefly summarizes the
most important theoretical results and approaches to cross section calculations
in order to place the discussion in historical perspective and offer a concise
introduction to the topic. Based on experimental data and theoretical
predictions, a new fit for ionization cross sections is proposed. The range of
validity and accuracy of several frequently used approximations (classical
trajectory, the Born approximation, and so forth) are discussed using, as
examples, the ionization cross sections of hydrogen and helium atoms by various

Adrenalectomy for Primary Aldosteronism:Significant Variability in Work-Up Strategies and Low Guideline Adherence in Worldwide Daily Clinical Practice
Background Various diagnostic tests are available to establish the primary aldosteronism (PA) diagnosis and to determine the disease laterality. Combined with the controversies in the literature, unawareness of guidelines and technical demands and high costs of some of these diagnostics, this could lead to significant differences in work-up strategies worldwide. Therefore, we investigated the work-up before surgery for PA in daily clinical practice within a multicenter study. Methods Patients who underwent unilateral adrenalectomy for PA within 16 centers in Europe, Canada, Australia and the USA between 2010 and 2016 were included. We did not exclude patients based on the performed diagnostic tests during work-up to make our data representative for current clinical practice. Adherence to the Endocrine Society Guideline and variables associated with not performing adrenal venous sampling (AVS) were analyzed. Results In total, 435 patients were eligible. An aldosterone-to-renin ratio, confirmatory test, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging and AVS were performed in 82.9%, 32.9%, 86.9%, 17.0% and 65.3% of patients, respectively. A complete work-up, as recommended by the guideline, was performed in 13.1% of patients. Bilateral disease or normal adrenal anatomy on CT (OR 16.19; CI 3.50-74.99), smaller tumor size on CT (OR 0.06; CI 0.04-0.08) and presence of hypokalemia (OR 2.00; CI 1.19-3.32) were independently associated with performing AVS. Conclusions This study is the first to examine the daily clinical practice work-up of PA within a worldwide cohort of surgical patients. The results demonstrate significant variability in work-up strategies and low adherence to The Endocrine Society guideline
An Analysis of Resting-State Functional Transcranial Doppler Recordings from Middle Cerebral Arteries
Functional transcrannial Doppler (fTCD) is used for monitoring the hemodynamics characteristics of major cerebral arteries. Its resting-state characteristics are known only when considering the maximal velocity corresponding to the highest Doppler shift (so called the envelope signals). Significantly more information about the resting-state fTCD can be gained when considering the raw cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) recordings. In this paper, we considered simultaneously acquired envelope and raw CBFV signals. Specifically, we collected bilateral CBFV recordings from left and right middle cerebral arteries using 20 healthy subjects (10 females). The data collection lasted for 15 minutes. The subjects were asked to remain awake, stay silent, and try to remain thought-free during the data collection. Time, frequency and time-frequency features were extracted from both the raw and the envelope CBFV signals. The effects of age, sex and body-mass index were examined on the extracted features. The results showed that the raw CBFV signals had a higher frequency content, and its temporal structures were almost uncorrelated. The information-theoretic features showed that the raw recordings from left and right middle cerebral arteries had higher content of mutual information than the envelope signals. Age and body-mass index did not have statistically significant effects on the extracted features. Sex-based differences were observed in all three domains and for both, the envelope signals and the raw CBFV signals. These findings indicate that the raw CBFV signals provide valuable information about the cerebral blood flow which can be utilized in further validation of fTCD as a clinical tool. © 2013 Sejdić et al
A Novel and Generic Workflow of Indocyanine Green Perfusion Assessment Integrating Standardization and Quantification Towards Clinical Implementation
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to generate a reproducible and generalizable Workflow model of ICG-angiography integrating Standardization and Quantification (WISQ) that can be applied uniformly within the surgical innovation realm independent of the user. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Tissue perfusion based on indocyanine green (ICG)-angiography is a rapidly growing application in surgical innovation. Interpretation of have been subjective and error-prone due to the lack of a standardized and quantitative ICG-workflow and analytical methodology. There is a clinical need for a more generic, reproducible, and quantitative ICG perfusion model for objective assessment of tissue perfusion. METHODS: In this multicenter, proof-of-concept study, we present a generic and reproducible ICG-workflow integrating standardization and quantification for perfusion assessment. To evaluate our model's clinical feasibility and reproducibility, we assessed the viability of parathyroid glands after performing thyroidectomy. Biochemical hypoparathyroidism was used as the postoperative endpoint and its correlation with ICG quantification intraoperatively. Parathyroid gland are an ideal model as parathyroid function post-surgery is only affected by perfusion. RESULTS: We show that visual -subjective- interpretation of ICG-angiography by experienced surgeons on parathyroid perfusion cannot reliably predict organ function impairment postoperatively, emphasizing the importance of an ICG quantification model. WISQ was able to standardize and quantify ICG-angiography and provided a robust and reproducible perfusion curve analysis. A low ingress slope of the perfusion curve combined with a compromised egress slope was indicative for parathyroid organ dysfunction in 100% of the cases. CONCLUSION: WISQ needs prospective validation in larger series and may eventually support clinical decision-making to predict and prevent postoperative organ function impairment in a large and varied surgical population
Sentinel lymph node detection in thyroid carcinoma using 68Ga-tilmanocept PET/CT: a proof-of-concept study protocol
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a diagnostic staging procedure. The procedure aims to identify the first draining lymph node(s), which are most likely to contain metastases. SLNB is applied in various cancers, but not currently in thyroid carcinoma. However, treatment strategies are changing, making SLNB clinically relevant. SLNB may lead to more accurate staging, prevent unnecessary treatment and help achieve earlier curation. 68Ga-tilmanocept PET/computed tomography (CT) can better localize sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) near the primary tumor than planar scintigraphy and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT. This paper describes the rationale and design of a study investigating SLNB using 68Ga-tilmanocept PET/CT and indocyanine-green- 99mTc-nanocolloid in ten differentiated and medullary thyroid carcinoma patients. Localization and number of SLNs, pathology result, optimal scan protocol, surgical time and surgeon's experience are examined. Clinical Trial Registration: 2021-002470-42 (EudraCT)
