This paper presents the data of the estimation of stabilometric indicator in 293 patients with major dental diseases accompanied by a decrease in the interalveolar distance and 102 patients without signs of decreased occlusal vertical dimension. The cases with the habitual occlusion with signs of decreased occlusal vertical dimension show significant (P < 0.001) deterioration of the main indicators of the balance function. Optimization of the jaw relation has led to significant improvement of the coefficient of the equilibrium function and the area of the statokinesigram ellip

Anatomical and physiological basis of the reduced occlusion syndrome

Decrease in the interalveolar distance (IAD) that develops during a period of permanent occlusion as a result of progressive primary dental diseases: Increased abrasion of hard tissues of the teeth, extensive edentulous space, and generalized form of periodontitis is accompanied by morphofunctional changes in the masticatory muscles and the development of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The objective of the study was to identify development mechanisms of the reduced occlusion syndrome that develops as a result of decrease in the IAD caused by primary dental disease

This study presents data on change of the electrophysiological function of retina as a reaction to the decrease of interalveolar space in patients with major dental diseases of various origin. Our electroretinographic study has revealed an improvement in the amplitudes of b-wave of maximum (total) ERG and b-wave of rod (scotopic) system of retina electrogenesis, a positive component reflecting the macula functioning (P50) and the improvement of the retinal ganglion cells functioning (3rd neuron of optic pathway) the amplitude of the negative component (N95) in patients upon restoration of the occlusal vertical dimensio

Distant response of the visual analyzer function (visual fields) to the reduction of occlusal vertical dimension in dental patients

The study describes a Computer Automated Perimetry (CAP) "white-on-white" for the analysis of the visual fields which used the program 30-2 and evaluated a fovea function (macular region). CAP is used in ophthalmic practice for registering the changes of the light sensitivity of the retina which value is one of the most important characteristics of the visual analyzer conditi
