This paper analyzes and describes the conceptualization and definitions of translation strategies in Russian translation studies in comparison to Western translation studies. In Western translation studies, global translation strategies are often approached in terms of dichotomies, such as Lawrence Venuti’s concepts of foreignization and domestication (1995). In contrast, Russian translation scholars prefer to focus on a third strategy, ‘the golden mean’ between the two extremes (Barhudarov 1975; Komissarov 1990; Recker 1974). Although the idea of ‘the golden mean’ has also appeared in Western ideas about translation (see e.g. Dryden 1991/1680), it is far less prevalent than in Russian translation studies, and its Russian concepts are little known in the West. Roolipeliä käännösalan opiskelijoille ja ammattilaisille: Kokemuksia yhteisöllisesti kehitetystä haastavan asiakasviestinnän roolipelistä

This article reports on our experiences of a role play on challenging situations in translator–client communication, tested with both students and professionals. We first explore role playing as a teaching method and its current applications in translator and interpreter training, also illustrating what kinds of challenging situations T/I professionals encounter with their clients. We then describe how the role play was developed as a collaborative effort, explain its principles and give examples of scenarios. The role play was tested both in translator training (autumn 2016) and at a workshop for professional translators and interpreters and T/I trainers (spring 2017). The feedback indicates that the role play not only complements current teaching methods and content but also has something to offer to professionals already working in the T/I field. Based on the feedback, the rules have been specified and some scenarios revised. The experiences from the role play will be used in developing an Internet guide for professional translators (www.kaantajamestarinkirja.fi), and we hope to organise further role play sessions for both students and professional translators and interpreters to develop the role play further and foster this cooperation with the T/I field.This article reports on our experiences of a role play on challenging situations in translator–client communication, tested with both students and professionals. Increasing translation awareness: A course designed for PhD researchers

Multilingualism is so deeply embedded in researchers’ everyday work that they may not fully acknowledge how big a role translation plays in it. In this article, we examine PhD researchers’ views on research translation through the concept of translation awareness. We demonstrate how PhD researchers as paraprofessional translators see the role of translation in their research projects and what specific translation challenges they encounter. We also examine how taking part in a course on translating research material influences their views.
