Efficacy of cyclosporin A in psoriasis: a summary of the United States’ experience
Since its discovery in 1972, cyclosporin A (CyA) has been widely used in the experimental treatment of multiple inflammatory diseases considered to be of immune-mediated aetiology. In dermatology, oral CyA is most effective in the treatment of psoriasis and has been used successfully for plaque-type, pustular and erythrodermic forms of the disease. While dosages ranging from 1 to 14 mg/kg/day have been used, a starting dose of 4 mg/kg/day gives a rapid response with few side-effects. Nephrotoxicity remains the greatest concern in long-term use of the drug. Although intralesional CyA has proven effective in psoriasis, topical preparations have not. Regular and Chaotic Motion in General Relativity: The Case of a Massive Magnetic Dipole
Circular motion of particles, dust grains and fluids in the vicinity of
compact objects has been investigated as a model for accretion of gaseous and
dusty environment. Here we further discuss, within the framework of general
relativity, figures of equilibrium of matter under the influence of combined
gravitational and large-scale magnetic fields, assuming that the accreted
material acquires a small electric charge due to interplay of plasma processes
and photoionization. In particular, we employ an exact solution describing the
massive magnetic dipole and we identify the regions of stable motion. We also
investigate situations when the particle dynamics exhibits the onset of chaos.
In order to characterize the measure of chaoticness we employ techniques of

Locating bugs without looking back
Bug localisation is a core program comprehension task in software maintenance: given the observation of a bug, e.g. via a bug report, where is it located in the source code? Information retrieval (IR) approaches see the bug report as the query, and the source code files as the documents to be retrieved, ranked by relevance. Such approaches have the advantage of not requiring expensive static or dynamic analysis of the code. However, current state-of-the-art IR approaches rely on project history, in particular previously fixed bugs or previous versions of the source code. We present a novel approach that directly scores each current file against the given report, thus not requiring past code and reports. The scoring method is based on heuristics identified through manual inspection of a small sample of bug reports. We compare our approach to eight others, using their own five metrics on their own six open source projects. Out of 30 performance indicators, we improve 27 and equal 2. Over the projects analysed, on average we find one or more affected files in the top 10 ranked files for 76% of the bug reports. Double-blind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate the efficacy of fish oil and low-dose UVB in the treatment of psoriasis
Since eicosanoids have been implicated in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, less potent eicosanoid mediators derived from fish oil might improve psoriasis. Using a double-blind, randomized, parallel design, 18 patients with stable, plaque psoriasis received capsules of either fish oil or identical-appearing placebo olive oil for 15 weeks, with concomitant sub-erythemal UVB in weeks 3 to 11. At the conclusion of phototherapy, and 4 weeks later, patients in the fish oil group had a greater decrease in the total body surface area of psoriasis and more improvement compared to patients in the olive oil group. The improvement in the fish oil group was statistically significantly greater for all parameters compared to the change in the olive oil group. Coarse-graining of cellular automata, emergence, and the predictability of complex systems
We study the predictability of emergent phenomena in complex systems. Using
nearest neighbor, one-dimensional Cellular Automata (CA) as an example, we show
how to construct local coarse-grained descriptions of CA in all classes of
Wolfram's classification. The resulting coarse-grained CA that we construct are
capable of emulating the large-scale behavior of the original systems without
accounting for small-scale details. Several CA that can be coarse-grained by
this construction are known to be universal Turing machines; they can emulate
any CA or other computing devices and are therefore undecidable. We thus show
that because in practice one only seeks coarse-grained information, complex
physical systems can be predictable and even decidable at some level of
description. The renormalization group flows that we construct induce a
hierarchy of CA rules. This hierarchy agrees well with apparent rule complexity
and is therefore a good candidate for a complexity measure and a classification
method. Finally we argue that the large scale dynamics of CA can be very
simple, at least when measured by the Kolmogorov complexity of the large scale
update rule, and moreover exhibits a novel scaling law. We show that because of
this large-scale simplicity, the probability of finding a coarse-grained
description of CA approaches unity as one goes to increasingly coarser scales.
We interpret this large scale simplicity as a pattern formation mechanism in
which large scale patterns are forced upon the system by the simplicity of the
rules that govern the large scale dynamics.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Controlling crystal symmetries in phase-field crystal models
We investigate the possibility to control the symmetry of ordered states in
phase-field crystal models by tuning nonlinear resonances. In two dimensions,
we find that a state of square symmetry as well as coexistence between squares
and hexagons can be easily obtained. In contrast, it is delicate to obtain
coexistence of squares and liquid. We develop a general method for constructing
free energy functionals that exhibit solid-liquid coexistence with desired
crystal symmetries. As an example, we develop a free energy functional for
square-liquid coexistence in two dimensions. A systematic analysis for
determining the parameters of the necessary nonlinear terms is provided. The
implications of our findings for simulations of materials with simple cubic

Rapid Quantification of Molecular Diversity for Selective Database Acquisition
There is an increasing need to expand the structural diversity of the molecules investigated in lead-discovery programs. One way in which this can be achieved is by acquiring external datasets that will enhance an existing database.
