    From Young and Hot to Old and Cold: Comparing White Dwarf Cooling Theory to Main Sequence Stellar Evolution in Open Clusters

    I explore the current ability of both white dwarf cooling theory and main sequence stellar evolution theory to accurately determine stellar population ages by comparing ages derived using both techniques for open clusters ranging from 0.1 to 4 Gyr. I find good agreement between white dwarf and main sequence evolutionary ages over the entire age range currently available for study. I also find that directly comparing main sequence turn-off ages to white dwarf ages is only weakly sensitive to realistic levels of errors in cluster distance, metallicity, and reddening. Additional detailed comparisons between white dwarf and main sequence ages have tremendous potential to refine and calibrate both of these important clocks, and I present new simulations of promising open cluster targets.     Optical and infrared ground-based astronomy is undergoing a renaissance. Advances in material technology, system modeling, and the ability to correct atmospheric distortions in real time have produced a new generation of powerful, large telescopes. An equally profound revolution stems from the availability of large observational databases that span the electromagnetic spectrum. The increased use of such databases as well as the need to operate the new telescopes efficiently requires the development of a National or International Virtual Observatory to set standards for astronomical database formats, data quality assurance, and access protocols, and also to provide all-inclusive centers for data products

    Transcription factor search for a DNA promoter in a three-states model

    To ensure fast gene activation, Transcription Factors (TF) use a mechanism known as facilitated diffusion to find their DNA promoter site. Here we analyze such a process where a TF alternates between 3D and 1D diffusion. In the latter (TF bound to the DNA), the TF further switches between a fast translocation state dominated by interaction with the DNA backbone, and a slow examination state where interaction with DNA base pairs is predominant. We derive a new formula for the mean search time, and show that it is faster and less sensitive to the binding energy fluctuations compared to the case of a single sliding state. We find that for an optimal search, the time spent bound to the DNA is larger compared to the 3D time in the nucleus, in agreement with recent experimental data. Our results further suggest that modifying switching via phosphorylation or methylation of the TF or the DNA can efficiently regulate transcription.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Deep Photometry of the Globular Cluster M5: Distance Estimates from White Dwarf and Main-Sequence Stars

    We present deep VI photometry of stars in the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904) based on images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches below V ≈27 mag, revealing the upper 2–3 mag of the white dwarf cooling sequence and main-sequence stars 8 mag and more below the turnoff. We fit the main sequence to subdwarfs of known parallax to obtain a true distance modulus of (m ̶ M )0 = 14:45 ± 0:11 mag. A second distance estimate based on fitting the cluster white dwarf sequence to field white dwarfs with known parallax yielded (m _ M)0 = 14:67 ± 0:18 mag. We discuss the nature of the difference between the two distance estimates and suggest approaches for reducing the uncertainty in white dwarf fitting estimates for future studies. We couple our distance estimates with extensive photometry of the cluster’s RR Lyrae variables to provide a calibration of the RR Lyrae absolute magnitude yielding MV (RR) = 0:42 ± 0:10 mag at [Fe/H] = ̶ 1:11 dex. We provide another luminosity calibration in the form of reddening-free Wasenheit functions. Comparison of our calibrations with predictions based on recent models combining stellar evolution and pulsation theories shows encouraging agreement, and the existing differences may provide useful feedback to the models

    Detection of Intergalactic Red-Giant-Branch Stars in the Virgo Cluster

    It has been suspected for nearly 50 years that clusters of galaxies contain a population of intergalactic stars, ripped from galaxies during cluster formation or when the galaxies’ orbits take them through the cluster center. Support for the existence of such a population of free-floating stars comes from measurements of the diffuse light in clusters and from recent detections of planetary nebulae with positions and/or velocities far removed from any observed cluster galaxy. 10 , 11 But estimates for the mass of the diffuse population and its distribution relative to the galaxies are still highly uncertain. Here we report the direct detection of intergalactic stars in deep images of a blank field in the Virgo Cluster. The data suggest that approximately 10% of the stellar mass of the cluster is in intergalactic stars. We observe a relatively homogeneous distribution of stars, with evidence of a slight gradient toward M87

    Identification of Cool White Dwarfs in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey

    We report our search for the cool white dwarfs belonging to the Galactic disk by extending the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. Narrow-band DDO51 photometry of the Deep Wide-Field Survey's northern field was obtained using the 4m-Mayall Telescope and the MOSAIC imager to separate cool white dwarfs from other stellar types of similar T_eff. Follow-up spectroscopy of four white dwarf candidates from our photometric search resulted in the discovery of two new cool white dwarfs as companions to M dwarfs.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of the 13th European Workshop on White Dwarf
