    With mobile phones becoming central parts of our lives, mobile technology gets criticized for its negative impact on people's well-being. Studies generally report negative associations between mobile phone use (MPU) and well-being. However, few studies contrast the relationship of MPU with different concepts of positive psychology. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between MPU and different concepts of positive psychology: life satisfaction, well-being, and mindfulness. Data from 461 German speaking participants answering an online-questionnaire were analyzed. Overall, results suggest that participants who use their mobile phones more often report lower well-being, life satisfaction, and mindfulness scores. Furthermore, results imply that the relationships between positive psychology concepts and MPU differ between men and women. Results indicate that MPU and its associations with concepts of positive psychology are relevant areas for research and deserve more attention

    Are the negative effects of social networking a privilege of the rich? Social network usage and life satisfaction across European countries

    This paper examines the effect which social network use (SNU) has on individual life satisfaction across 27 different European countries using the 2016 Eurobarometer 86.2 survey from the European Commission (N ​= ​15,039). An ordered probit estimation technique is used to estimate the relationship between SNU and individual life satisfaction. An interaction variable between SNU and country is created and is included in this paper’s estimation to show how SNU affects life satisfaction differently across countries. Findings indicate that there are considerable variations across countries regarding the effect which SNU has on life satisfaction. Overall results show that frequent SNU negatively impacts individual life satisfaction, while moderate SNU positively impacts life satisfaction. However, the negative effect associated with frequent SNU is strongest amongst individuals from countries with higher performing economies while individuals from countries with lower performing economies prove more resilient to the negative effects of SNU. This indicates that excessive SNU is most damaging for individuals from high performing economies. We propose that this effect is due to the poorer endowment of social capital in countries with lower performing economies relative to countries with higher performing economies. This lesser level of social capital means that the beneficial effect which SNU provides to social capital, and in turn life satisfaction, is greater in countries with lower performing economies than it is in countries with higher performing economies. This paper provides an important contribution to literature concerning SNU and life satisfaction by examining and reporting disparities between the effect of SNU on life satisfaction across different countries

    Troll story: The dark tetrad and online trolling revisited with a glance at humor.

    Internet trolling is considered a negative form of online interaction that can have detrimental effects on people's well-being. This pre-registered, experimental study had three aims: first, to replicate the association between internet users' online trolling behavior and the Dark Tetrad of personality (Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, and sadism) established in prior research; second, to investigate the effect of experiencing social exclusion on people's motivation to engage in trolling behavior; and third, to explore the link between humor styles and trolling behavior. In this online study, participants were initially assessed on their personality, humor styles, and global trolling behavior. Next, respondents were randomly assigned to a social inclusion or exclusion condition. Thereafter, we measured participants' immediate trolling motivation. Results drawn from 1,026 German-speaking participants indicate a clear correlation between global trolling and all facets of the Dark Tetrad as well as with aggressive and self-defeating humor styles. However, no significant relationship between experiencing exclusion/inclusion and trolling motivation emerged. Our quantile regression findings suggest that psychopathy and sadism scores have a significant positive effect on immediate trolling motivation after the experimental manipulation, whereas Machiavellianism and narcissism did not explain variation in trolling motivation. Moreover, being socially excluded had generally no effect on immediate trolling motivation, apart from participants with higher immediate trolling motivation, for whom the experience of social exclusion actually reduced trolling motivation. We show that not all facets of the Dark Tetrad are of equal importance for predicting immediate trolling motivation and that research should perhaps focus more on psychopathy and sadism. Moreover, our results emphasize the relevance of quantile regression in personality research and suggest that even psychopathy and sadism may not be suitable predictors for low levels of trolling behavior

    Not All Places Are Equal: Using Instagram to Understand Cognitions and Affect towards Renewable Energy Infrastructures

    The research on people–place relations makes an important contribution to the understanding of the public responses to renewable energy technologies (RETs). Social media not only provides easy access to the sentiments and attitudes of online users towards RETs, but social media content can also shape the discourse, both on- and offline, about RETs. Hence, social media content analysis provides valuable insights into the public responses to RETs. However, as of now, only a small number of studies have investigated people–place relations in the context of the energy transition via online content. To address this lack of knowledge, this study aims to increase the understanding of people–place relations by investigating the relationship between the place scales mentioined in Instagram posts (categorized from local to planet) and the sentiments that are expressed in said posts, depending on different energy infrastructures (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, powerlines, and renewable energy in general). Our analysis of 1500 Instagram posts shows that the place scales that are mentioned in the Instagram posts are related to some differences in the post emotionality, and that these effects differ across the different hashtags that are related to RETs. By using a sociocognitive approach, this study is the first to investigate Instagram posts in the context of the energy transition and people–place relationships
