Investigations of laser pumped gas cell atomic frequency standard
The performance characteristics of a rubidium gas cell atomic frequency standard might be improved by replacing the standard rubidium discharge lamp with a single mode laser diode. Aspects of the laser pumped gas cell atomic clock studied include effects due to laser intensity, laser detuning, and the choice of the particular atomic absorption line. Results indicate that the performance of the gas cell clock may be improved by judicious choice of the operating parameters of the laser diode. The laser diode also proved to be a valuable tool in investigating the operation of the conventional gas cell clock. Results concerning linewidths, the light shift effect and the effect of isotopic spin exchange in the conventional gas cell clock are reported
Preliminary assessment of cognitive impairments in canine idiopathic epilepsy
In humans, epilepsy can induce or accelerate cognitive impairment (CI). There is emerging evidence of CI in dogs with idiopathic epilepsy (IE) from recent epidemiological studies. The aim of our study was to assess CI in dogs with IE using two tests of cognitive dysfunction designed for use in a clinical setting. Dogs with IE (n=17) were compared against controls (n=18) in their performance in two tasks; a spatial working memory task and a problem-solving task. In addition, owners completed the Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Rating (CCDR) scale for their dog. The groups did not differ statistically with respect to age and breed. Dogs with IE performed significantly worse than controls on the spatial working memory task (P=0.016), but not on the problem solving task (P=0.683). CCDR scores were significantly higher in the IE group (P=0.016); however, no dogs reach the recommended threshold score for CCD diagnosis. Our preliminary data suggest that dogs with IE exhibit impairments in a spatial working memory task. Further research is required to explore the effect of IE on other cognitive abilities in dogs with a larger sample, characterising the age of onset, nature and progression of any impairments and the impact of anti-epileptic drugs
Development of learning objectives for neurology in a veterinary curriculum: part I: undergraduates
Background
With an increasing caseload of veterinary neurology patients in first opinion practice, there is a requirement to establish relevant learning objectives for veterinary neurology encompassing knowledge, skills and attitudes for veterinary undergraduate students in Europe. With help of experts in veterinary neurology from the European College of Veterinary Neurology (ECVN) and the European Society of Veterinary Neurology (ESVN) a survey of veterinary neurologic learning objectives using a modified Delphi method was conducted. The first phase comprised the development of a draft job description and learning objectives by a working group established by the ECVN. In the second phase, a quantitative questionnaire (multiple choice, Likert scale and free text) covering 140 learning objectives and subdivided into 8 categories was sent to 341 ESVN and ECVN members and a return rate of 62% (n = 213/341) was achieved.
Results
Of these 140 learning objectives ECVN Diplomates and ESVN members considered 42 (30%) objectives as not necessary for standard clinical veterinary neurology training, 94 (67%) were graded to be learned at a beginner level and 4 (3%) at an advanced level. The following objectives were interpreted as the most important day one skills: interpret laboratory tests, perform a neurological examination and establish a neuroanatomical localization. In this survey the three most important diseases of the central nervous system included epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease and inflammatory diseases. The three most important diseases of the peripheral nervous system included polyradiculoneuritis, myasthenia gravis and toxic neuropathies.
Conclusions
The results of this study should help to reform the veterinary curriculum regarding neurology and may reduce the phenomenon of “Neurophobia”.</p
Laser induced asymmetry and inhomogeneous broadening of the microwave lineshape of a gas cell atomic frequency standard
The possibility of replacing the RF discharge lamp in a rubidium gas cell clock with a single mode laser diode is addressed. Since the short term stability of the rubidium frequency standard is limited by the shot noise of the photodetector, an increased signal-to-noise ratio due to more efficient laser diode optical pumping might improve the short term performance. Because the emission wavelength of the laser diode can be tuned, improved long term performance could be gained through the control of the light shift effect. However, due to the nature of the gas cell frequency standard, various physical phenomena are strongly coupled in their effect on the frequency output, and thus careful consideration must be given to any change in one parameter because of its interrelation with other parameters. Some investigations concerning the coupled effect of the optical and microwave fields in the rubidium atomic clock are reported. It is shown that this type of coupling is an important consideration for any attempt to incorporate a laser diode into a gas cell clock
Chord Label Personalization through Deep Learning of Integrated Harmonic Interval-based Representations
The increasing accuracy of automatic chord estimation systems, the
availability of vast amounts of heterogeneous reference annotations, and
insights from annotator subjectivity research make chord label personalization
increasingly important. Nevertheless, automatic chord estimation systems are
historically exclusively trained and evaluated on a single reference
annotation. We introduce a first approach to automatic chord label
personalization by modeling subjectivity through deep learning of a harmonic
interval-based chord label representation. After integrating these
representations from multiple annotators, we can accurately personalize chord
labels for individual annotators from a single model and the annotators' chord
label vocabulary. Furthermore, we show that chord personalization using
multiple reference annotations outperforms using a single reference annotation.Comment: Proceedings of the First International Conference on Deep Learning

A retrospective study of the prevalence of the canine degenerative myelopathy associated superoxide dismutase 1 mutation (SOD1: c. 118G> A) in a referral population of German Shepherd dogs from the UK
BACKGROUND: Canine degenerative myelopathy (CDM) is an adult onset, progressive neurodegenerative disease of the spinal cord. The disease was originally described in the German Shepherd dog (GSD), but it is now known to occur in many other dog breeds. A previous study has identified a mutation in the superoxide dismutase 1 gene (SOD1:c.118G > A) that is associated with susceptibility to CDM. In the present study, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was used to genotype GSD for SOD1:c.118G > A in order to estimate the prevalence of the mutation in a referral population of GSD in the UK. RESULTS: This study demonstrated that the RFLP assay, based on use of PCR and subsequent digestion with the Eco571 enzyme, provided a simple genotyping test for the SOD1:c.118G > A mutation. In a young GSD population (i.e. dogs less than 6 years of age, before clinical signs of the disease usually become apparent), 8 of 50 dogs were found to be homozygous and a further 19 were heterozygous for the mutation. In dogs over 8 years of age, 21 of 50 dogs admitted to a tertiary referral hospital with pelvic limb ataxia as a major clinical sign were homozygous for the mutation, compared to none of 50 dogs of similar age, but where no neurological disease was reported on referral. CONCLUSIONS: This data suggests that genotyping for the SOD1:c.118G > A mutation is clinically applicable and that the mutation has a high degree of penetrance. Genotyping might also be useful for screening the GSD population to avoid mating of two carriers, but since the allele frequency is relatively high in the UK population of GSD, care should be taken to avoid reduction in genetic diversity within the breed
Positional Coincidence between the High-latitude Steady Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources and Possibly Merging Clusters of Galaxies
We report an evidence for the first time that merging clusters of galaxies
are a promising candidate for the origin of high galactic-latitude, steady
unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources. Instead of using past optical catalogs of
eye-selected clusters, we made a matched-filter survey of galaxy clusters over
4\arcdeg \times 4\arcdeg areas around seven steady unidentified EGRET sources
at |b|>45\arcdeg together with a 100 \sq \arcdeg area near the South
Galactic Pole as a control field. In total, 154 Abell-like cluster candidates
and 18 close pairs/groups of these clusters, expected to be possibly merging
clusters, were identified within estimated redshift . Five
among the seven EGRET sources have one or two cluster pairs/groups (CPGs)
within 1\arcdeg from them. We assess the statistical significance of this
result by several methods, and the confidence level of the real excess is
maximally 99.8% and 97.8% in a conservative method. In contrast, we found no
significant correlation with single clusters. In addition to the spatial
correlation, we also found that the richness of CPGs associated with EGRET
sources is considerably larger than those of CPGs in the control field. These
results imply that a part of the steady unidentified EGRET sources at
high-latitude are physically associated with close CPGs, not with single
clusters. We also discuss possible interpretations of these results. We argue
that, if these associations are real, they are difficult to explain by hadronic
processes, but best explained by the inverse-Compton scattering by high energy
