Introduction
This chapter will motivate why it is useful to consider the topic of derivations
and filtering in more detail. We will argue against the popular belief that
the minimalist program and optimality theory are incompatible theories in that the
former places the explanatory burden on the generative device (the computational
system) whereas the latter places it on the fi ltering device (the OT evaluator).
Although this belief may be correct in as far as it describes existing tendencies,
we will argue that minimalist and optimality theoretic approaches normally adopt
more or less the same global architecture of grammar: both assume that a generator
defines a set S of potentially well-formed expressions that can be generated on the
basis of a given input and that there is an evaluator that selects the expressions from
S that are actually grammatical in a given language L. For this reason, we believe
that it has a high priority to investigate the role of the two components in more detail
in the hope that this will provide a better understanding of the differences and similarities
between the two approaches. We will conclude this introduction with a brief
review of the studies collected in this book.
Double Beta Decay
The motivation, present status, and future plans of the search for the
neutrinoless double beta decay are reviewed. It is argued that, motivated by
the recent observations of neutrino oscillations, there is a reasonable hope
that neutrinoless double beta decay corresponding to the neutrino mass scale
suggested by oscillations, of about 50 meV, actually exists. The
challenges to achieve the sensitivity corresponding to this mass scale, and
plans to overcome them, are described.Comment: 34 pages, 3 figures included, Submitted to Annu. Rev. Nucl. Part.

Tool pre-tensions covers prior to lacing
In securing a bulky object in a storage compartment, a cinching or tightening tool is used to draw two opposing cover halves together at a predetermined tension to permit quick lacing to retain the stored object. This tool is also useful in fabrication industries to draw components together during assembly or treating
Fourier domain preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm for atmospheric tomography
By 'atmospheric tomography' we mean the estimation of a layered atmospheric turbulence profile from measurements of the pupil-plane phase (or phase gradients) corresponding to several different guide star directions. We introduce what we believe to be a new Fourier domain preconditioned conjugate gradient (FD-PCG) algorithm for atmospheric tomography, and we compare its performance against an existing multigrid preconditioned conjugate gradient (MG-PCG) approach. Numerical results indicate that on conventional serial computers, FD-PCG is as accurate and robust as MG-PCG, but it is from one to two orders of magnitude faster for atmospheric tomography on 30 m class telescopes. Simulations are carried out for both natural guide stars and for a combination of finite-altitude laser guide stars and natural guide stars to resolve tip-tilt uncertainty
2H and 13C NMR studies on the temperature-dependent water and protein dynamics in hydrated elastin, myoglobin and collagen
2H NMR spin-lattice relaxation and line-shape analyses are performed to study
the temperature-dependent dynamics of water in the hydration shells of
myoglobin, elastin, and collagen
Atomic screening of nuclear transitions
In the analysis of time-reversal and Mössbauer absorption experiments, it is important to consider atomic processes which interfere with the direct nuclear transition. Interaction of the photon with the atomic electrons causes the radiation to acquire a phase shift, specified by the interference parameter ξ(L_π). We present theoretical expressions for ξ and compare our calculated values with experiment. Satisfactory agreement is obtained. In particular, an apparent violation of time-reversal invariance in the 129-keV transition of ^(191)Ir is fully explained by these effects
Universal measurement of quantum correlations of radiation
A measurement technique is proposed which, in principle, allows one to
observe the general space-time correlation properties of a quantized radiation
field. Our method, called balanced homodyne correlation measurement, unifies
the advantages of balanced homodyne detection with those of homodyne
correlation measurements.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, small misprints were corrected, accepted to Phys.
