    Hydride-dehydride fine zirconium powders for pyrotechnics

    In this paper, the possibility of obtaining fine zirconium powders by the hydrogenationdehydrogenation method is studied. The main parameters of the technological process that allow obtaining fine zirconium powders for pyrotechnics are determined. Hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of the samples are carried out in a rotating quartz tube placed in a furnace at temperatures of 380◦C and 850◦C, respectively. Zirconium hydride is milled using tungsten carbide balls to eliminate the presence of impurities. Thus it is possible to obtain a fine zirconium powder with a number-average particle size of 4.527 +- 2.650 Um and a specific surface area of 0.231 m2/g from the initial electrolytic zirconium powder with a number-average particle size of 220 Um and a specific surface area < 0.1 m2/g. The allowed relative error of measuring the specific surface area is +- 5%. Hence it is possible to reduce the particle size of zirconium powder by 54.6 times without changing the composition

    Determination of Au(III) and Ag(I) in Carbonaceous Shales and Pyrites by Stripping Voltammetry

    Techniques of stripping voltammetry (SV) determination of silver and gold in pyrites and carbonaceous matter are developed. The problem of quantitative transfer of the analytes into the solution is solved. For this purpose, the ore matrix of carbonaceous shales was decomposed by mineral acids in autoclaves at high pressures. The element to be determined from the sample matrix was separated by extraction. Ag(I) ions from the solutions were extracted in the form of a dithizonate complex in CCl4. Au(III) ions were extracted by diethyl ether. The extracts were decomposed thermally. The dry residue was dissolved in the background electrolyte, and the element was determined by the SV method. The graphite electrode (GE) impregnated with polyethylene was used as a working electrode in the SV determination of silver. The SV determination of gold was carried out using a GE modified by bismuth. The limits of detection (LOD) of Ag(I) and Au(III) contents were equal to 0.016 mg L&#8722;1 and 0.0086 mg L&#8722;1, respectively. The results of SV determination of gold and silver in standard samples, pyrites, and carbonaceous shales were presented. The silver content in the pyrite was 13.6 g t&#8722;1, and in carbon shale it was 0.34 g t&#8722;1. The concentration of gold in the pyrite of the Kirovsko&#8315;Kryklinskaya ore zone was 1.15 g t&#8722;1, while in carbonaceous shales it was 2.66 g t&#8722;1. The obtained data were consistent with the data of atomic emission spectroscopy (AES) and inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP&#8315;MS). The error of determination of elements by stripping voltammetry was calculated as ranging from 10 to 6 g t&#8722;1 (less than 12%) in pyrite and carbonaceous material when determining the silver content, and from 1 to 3 g t&#8722;1 (less than 22%) when determining the gold content in pyrite and carbonaceous matter

    Laser Ablation Synthesis and Characterization of Tb2O3 Nanoparticles for Magneto-Optical Ceramics

    In this study, nano-sized individual Tb2O3 particles synthesized by the laser ablation method were extensively characterized and assessed as suitable precursors for the fabrication of transparent magneto-optical ceramics without requiring the introduction of grain growth inhibitors and stabilizing additives. The as-produced powder comprised 13 nm particles with a spherical shape and monoclinic crystal structure, whose full transformation into cubic phase was achieved after heating at 950 &deg;C and 700 &deg;C under vacuum and Ar gas, respectively. After subjecting the nanopowder compact to pre-sintering at 1350 &deg;C, the microstructural features were investigated along with their correlation to the optical transmittance of Tb2O3 ceramic hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) for 2 h at 1450 &deg;C under 200 MPa. The as-HIPed sample had a brownish color, with an optical transmittance of 65.3% at a wavelength of 1060 nm and an average grain size of 14 &mu;m. The Verdet constant measured at wavelengths of 633 nm and 1060 nm was 471 rad T&minus;1 m&minus;1 and 142 rad T&minus;1 m&minus;1 to confirm a very high content of magneto-active Tb3+ ions. The obtained results indicate that laser ablation synthesis of nanoparticles followed by pre-sintering and HIP is a promising approach for the manufacture of magneto-optical Tb2O3 ceramics without specific sintering aids

    Bioleaching of Au-Containing Ore Slates and Pyrite Wastes

    The influence of the environment and bacterial cultures on the degree of gold leaching from Au-containing raw materials of different compositions, origins, and with different contents of gold, selected in the Ural Federal District (Russia), was determined. The leaching degree was determined according to the change of the gold concentration in the ore by means of mass-spectrometry with inductively-coupled plasma. It was demonstrated that the degree of Au bioleaching from carbonaceous-argillaceous slates, containing 2.17 g/t of gold, and from pyritic technogenic raw materials, containing 1.15 g/t, when holding them in peptone water and Leten medium reached 92.17% and 87.83%, respectively

    Efficacy of lorlatinib in lung carcinomas carrying distinct ALK translocation variants: The results of a single-center study

    Background: Lorlatinib is a novel potent ALK inhibitor, with only a few studies reporting the results of its clinical use. Methods: This study describes the outcomes of lorlatinib treatment for 35 non-small cell lung cancer patients with ALK rearrangements, who had 2 (n = 5), 1 (n = 26) or none (n = 4) prior tyrosine kinase inhibitors and received lorlatinib mainly within the compassionate use program. Results: Objective tumor response (OR) and disease control (DC) were registered in 15/35 (43%) and 33/35 (94%) patients, respectively; brain metastases were particularly responsive to the treatment (OR: 22/27 (81%); DC: 27/27 (100%)). Median progression free survival (PFS) was estimated to be 21.8 months, and median overall survival (OS) approached to 70.1 months. Only 4 out of 35 patients experienced no adverse effects; two of them were the only subjects who had no clinical benefit from lorlatinib. PFS and OS in the no-adverse-events lorlatinib users were strikingly lower as compared to the remaining patients (1.1 months vs. 23.7 months and 10.5 months vs. not reached, respectively; p < 0.0001 for both comparisons). ALK translocation variants were known for 28 patients; there was no statistical difference between patients with V.1 and V.3 rearrangements with regard to the OS or PFS. Conclusion: Use of lorlatinib results in excellent disease outcomes, however caution must be taken for patients experiencing no adverse effects from this drug
