    This translation of the book ('The Historical Roots of Magic Tale') written by one of the most prominent Russian folklorists of the 20th century Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp, presents one more classical work of anthropological and folkloristical science to Slovenian researchers. The theoretical starting-points which Propp concived in his book “Morphology of the Folktale” was in this work projected on concrete material – on Russian and European folktales. By comparing folktale motifs with actual historical and anthropological sources he substantiated his structuralistical and ritualistical theoties in folk narrative research and folkloristics.S prevodom temeljnega dela enega najvidnejših raziskovalcev ljudskega pripovedništva minulega stoletja, Vladimirja Jakovljeviča Proppa, je slovenska znanstvena publicistika bogatejše še za eno klasično študijo antropološke in folkloristične vede. Knjiga Zgodovinske korenine čarobne pravljice predstavlja morfološko in ritualistično usmerjeno študijo ljudskih – predvsem ruskih – čarobnih pravljic. Teoretična izhodišča, ki jih je Propp zasnoval v Morfologiji pravljice, je tokrat uporabil ob konkretnih primerih ljudskih čarobnih pravljic, ki jih je vzporedil z zgodovinskimi in antropološkimi viri

    Refined Razumov-Stroganov conjectures for open boundaries

    Recently it has been conjectured that the ground-state of a Markovian Hamiltonian, with one boundary operator, acting in a link pattern space is related to vertically and horizontally symmetric alternating-sign matrices (equivalently fully-packed loop configurations (FPL) on a grid with special boundaries).We extend this conjecture by introducing an arbitrary boundary parameter. We show that the parameter dependent ground state is related to refined vertically symmetric alternating-sign matrices i.e. with prescribed configurations (respectively, prescribed FPL configurations) in the next to central row. We also conjecture a relation between the ground-state of a Markovian Hamiltonian with two boundary operators and arbitrary coefficients and some doubly refined (dependence on two parameters) FPL configurations. Our conjectures might be useful in the study of ground-states of the O(1) and XXZ models, as well as the stationary states of Raise and Peel models.Comment: 11 pages LaTeX, 8 postscript figure

    Performance/mathematics: a dramatisation of mathematical methods

    This essay conceptualises the notion of performance mathematics in terms of a paradoxical relationship with the constructed notion of truth, which is shared by theatrical and mathematical performance. Specifically, I argue that these two disciplines can and cannot be reconciled with truthfulness. Grounding my comparison on the notion of an axiomatic method common to both disciplines, I argue that theatrical and mathematical performance can speak of truths only when these truths are properly staged or methodologically grounded according to the internal rules and conditions laid out by each discipline. But in the same way that these truths can be constructed, or they can be done, so they can be undone. Arguing that mathematics can be described as a performance of specific outcomes involving abstract objects and functions, I trace a cross-disciplinary comparative analysis of performance elements (especially axioms and functions), drawing on a number of theatre and mathematical theories. Some suggestions are also put forward in terms of the connection between the performance of mathematised texts and computational mathematics, particularly in terms of an inherent poetics and theatricality inside the performance-oriented, mathematised languages of digital computing

    Combined method of opencast and underground mining of valuable ore

    The efficiency of the combined opencast and underground mining of deposits directly depends on the overburden amount within the open pit boundaries. The amount of overburden to be removed, in its turn, is determined by the angles of the open pit slopes. At the same time, the influence of the open pit slope angle on the amount of the rock mass within the open-pit contours increases in an arithmetic progression with the mining depth. This fact confirms the direct relationship between the open pit slope angle and the efficiency of the mining operations from both an economic and ecological points of view. The article considers the technology for mining steeply inclined deposits of valuable ores by means of underground chambers mined out in advance with consolidating stowing to support unworked sides of an open pit called “well”. The chambers which can be not only vertical but also inclined at an angle of 60-80° serve to create an artificial fence (a ring concrete support). The work of the fence supporting the open pit side is markedly different from that of retaining walls of any type since the consolidating stowing mixture used to create the fence provides an ideal contact of the concrete wall with the enclosing rocks, thus making it impossible for an artificial fence to overturn. The proposed combined mining technology is expected to reduce considerably the number of the overburden operations, to minimize the damage caused by mining operations to the environment, and to increase the intensity of mine workings
