The artist, who has lived and worked in Germany, meditates from a political point of view on the ambiguity of act of desertion. The monument that he projects is made of a flagpole of about 12 meters - with a flag on top of it, decorated with the infinity symbol - placed on an iron base on which a map is visible, a typical element of Vitone’s research (in this case the one of city of Cologne)

The project is presented at the contest Premio ArteGiovane in 2002, Torino incontra l’arte. Una porta per Torino. Vitone proposes the realisation of an installation in the square, placed in front of Mirafiori, dedicated to Emilio Salgari, the writer who spent most of his life in the city of Turin. The artist conceives to recreate a desert landscape washed by the sea, inspired by the stories of the series of novels “The Pirates of Malaysia”, a space that would have been crossed by the tram lines, stimulating in the passengers fantasies of adventures and mythical places

Foglie al vento is a project realised for the contest Arte per piazza Matteoti, organized by the city of Imola in 2010, that aimed at the creation of a monument to replace the memorial to the fallen of the First World War in the renovated Renaissance square. The project, that did not win the contest, consisted of the realization of a light installation in the arcade of one of the square sides. The idea of the artist was to place in the middle of each of the fourteen vaults of the arcade of Palazzo Sersanti a special lighting element that, through a dedicated optical system, would have projected on the ground the image of the same number of green Ginko Biloba leaves, replacing the preexisting lighting system

The project, realized with architect and curator Frank Boehm, was presented in 2009 on the occasion of the design competition for the architectural and artistic requalification of Piazza Giuseppe Verdi, announced by the city of La Spezia and P.A.A.L.M.A. (Premio Artista Architetto La Marrana Arte Ambientale) in partnership with Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio della Spezia. The idea of the artist and the architect was to convert the square into a pedestrian area, a kind of “urban living room”, a place of meeting. The square is divided into three equal parts: in the lateral parts they wanted to recreate an ideal Italian Garden, with orange trees, accessible on the west side to the customers of the coffee shop and on the opposite side to the students of the high school and junior high school. While in the central area, where the 1930’s building of the postal service is located, they planned to realise a rectangular fountain to be placed in front of the irregular staircase of the postal service building, and the protruding pavement, similar to piers inside the water

The inter-scale behaviour of two natural scaly clays

This paper describes the results of an experimental investigation of the inter-scale behaviour of two natural scaly clays. These have been tested by means of a custom-made inter-particle loading apparatus, which has enabled their mechanical response to be studied in both compression and shearing. The main features of the micromechanical behaviour of these clays have been compared, focusing on the influence of their composition, and the results are compared with those obtained testing the same materials using other devices (triaxial and ring shear apparatus). The results have shown that, contrary to expectations, the surfaces of the scales are not residual shear surfaces and the inter-scale angle of shearing resistance is actually closer to critical state or post-peak angles measured in conventional tests

Different patterns of HIV-1 DNA after therapy discontinuation

Background: By persisting in infected cells for a long period of time, proviral HIV-1 DNA can represent an alternative viral marker to RNA viral load during the follow-up of HIV-1 infected individuals. In the present study sequential blood samples of 10 patients under antiretroviral treatment from 1997 with two NRTIs, who refused to continue any antiviral regimen, were analyzed for 16-24 weeks to study the possible relationship between DNA and RNA viral load. Methods: The amount of proviral DNA was quantified by SYBR green real-time PCR in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a selected group of ten patients with different levels of plasmatic viremia (RNA viral load). Results: Variable levels of proviral DNA were found without any significant correlation between proviral load and plasma HIV-1 RNA levels. Results obtained showed an increase or a rebound in viral DNA in most patients, suggesting that the absence of therapy reflects an increase and/or a persistence of cells containing viral DNA. Conclusion: Even though plasma HIV RNA levels remain the basic parameter to monitor the intensity of viral replication, the results obtained seem to indicate that DNA levels could represent an adjunct prognostic marker in monitoring HIV-1 infected subjects

Occupational Safety and Health Act, Industrial Union v. American Petroleum Institute

    Get PDF
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration [hereinafter cited as OSHA] was created pursuant to Title 29 of the United States Code, to define the terms of this battle. In Industrial Union v. American Petroleum Institute, the federal judiciary has taken a hand at making these terms somewhat more clear. It is the object of this casenote to analyze the impact of the Industrial Union decision on the regulatory processes of OSHA, a task which involves a synthesis of the plurality, concurring and dissenting opinions

    Natural shelters, habitable landscapes

The purpose of this thesis will be to try to share with you an energy and character that I find in trees, in the earth, in the qualities of light, in the intimacy of houses and yards. There is a simple yet deep-running link between our created spaces (our homes) and the spirit and body of the woods. I feel a strong kinship between myself and the land that produced me- -a super-blood tie, a joining from long ago--that transcends anthropocentric thought and concern. I want to know that link, to be at ease with the earth and to extend this rapport as a way of understanding my sentiments about home and emotionally secure territories
