Parental Support during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Friend or Foe? A Moderation Analysis of the Association between Maternal Anxiety and Children’s Stress in Italian Dyads
: There is evidence that parental psychological disorders in stressful situations increase the risk of disturbance in child development. This has been investigated in disasters but not in pandemics, which are sensibly different from other types of traumatic events. We investigated the relationship between mothers' anxiety and their children's (self-reported) stress and the boundary conditions of this association during the first full COVID-19 lockdown in Italy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mothers might have increased their protective attitudes to secure and support their children; we tested whether the relationship between mothers' anxiety and children's stress was weaker (buffer effect) or stronger (over-protection effect) when perceived parental support was high. We measured mothers' anxiety, children's perceived parental support, and children's stress in a sample of 414 8- to 11-year-old primary school children (229 females, Mage = 9.44) and 395 mothers (Mage = 42.84). Results supported the over-protection scenario and provided the first evidence for the "helicopter-parent effect" during the COVID-19 pandemic: mothers' anxiety was positively associated with children's stress only when perceived support was high. Our finding highlights the importance of educating parents (for example, via emotional training) to prevent the worst consequences of adverse events in children and promote their mental health
MiR-3201 as a Prognostic Blood Biomarker for Curative Treatments in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Background: Hepatic resection, radiofrequency ablation (RF), and liver transplantation (LT) represent the only available curative treatments for early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Various studies showed that the 5-year overall survival (OS) rate reaches ∼70% after resection and ∼60% after RF. Objective: To improve the success rate of curative therapies and consequently the OS, an improvement in patients' selection and management should be pursued. In this regard, microRNAs (miRNAs) can be helpful prognostic biomarkers. Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, a miRNA array profiling was performed on 34 HCC blood samples which is collected before therapy (T0), 1 month (T1), and 6 months (T2) after curative treatments (resection and RF) to identify noninvasive biomarker candidates for therapy response and OS. MiRNAs were validated in 80 blood HCC samples using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). Patients were divided into complete responder (CR) and partial responder and progressive disease (PRPD). Results: Among the selected miRNAs, miR-3201 is significantly associated with treatment response in the validation phase, showing a 23% reduction (P = .026) in CR compared to PRPD. MiR-3201 was able to distinguish CR from PRPD (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.69, 71% sensitivity, 70% specificity, P = .0036). Furthermore, lower levels of miR-3201 were associated with longer OS (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.61, P = .0006). Conclusions: Blood miR-3201 could be used as a prognostic biomarker for curative therapy response and OS in HCC
Predictors of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Early Recurrence in Patients Treated with Surgical Resection or Ablation Treatment: A Single-Center Experience
Introduction: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most diagnosed malignancy and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, with poor overall survival despite available curative treatments. One of the most crucial factors influencing survival in HCC is recurrence. The current study aims to determine factors associated with early recurrence of HCC in patients with BCLC Stage 0 or Stage A treated with surgical resection or local ablation. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 58 consecutive patients diagnosed with HCC within BCLC Stage 0 or Stage A and treated either by surgical resection or local ablation with maximum nodule diameter 20 mm (HR 4.5, 95% C.I. 3.9–5.1), platelet count 2 (HR 2.7, 95% C.I. 2.2–3.3). Discussion and Conclusions: Our results are in line with the current literature. Male gender and tumor nodule dimension are the main risk factors associated with early HCC recurrence. Platelet count and other combined scores can be used as predictive tools for early HCC recurrence, although more studies are needed to define cut-offs
Once upon a time…: Using fairy tales as a form of vicarious contact to prevent stigma‐based bullying among schoolchildren
We conducted a vicarious contact intervention with the aim of promoting bystanders' intentions to react to stigma-based bullying among schoolchildren. Participants were Italian primary schoolchildren (N = 117 first to third graders); the outgroup was represented by foreign children. Vicarious contact was operationalized with story reading, creating fairy tales on stigma-based bullying where minority characters were bullied by majority characters. Once a week for 3 weeks, participants were read fairy tales in small groups by an experimenter and engaged in reinforcing activities. Results revealed that the intervention increased intergroup empathy (but not intergroup perspective-taking) and anti-bullying peer norms and fostered contact intentions. The intervention also had indirect effects via intergroup empathy on helping and contact intentions and on bystanders' reactions to stigma based-bullying. We discuss theoretical and practical implications, also in terms of the relevance of the present results for school policy. MicroRNAs as Regulators of Neo-Angiogenesis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a highly vascularized neoplasm. In the tumor niche, abundant angiogenesis is fundamental in providing
nutrients for tumor growth and represents the first escape route for metastatic cells. Active angiogenesis, together with metastasis, are
responsible for the reduction of recurrence-free survival of HCC.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that have recently drawn attention in molecular targeted therapy or as diagnostic and
prognostic biomarkers. MiRNA expression in HCC has been widely studied in the last decade. Some miRNAs have been found to be up- or
down-regulated, besides association with apoptosis, metastasis progression and drug resistance have been found. This review article aims to
summarize the angiogenetic process in tumor diseases and to update on what has been found in the vast world of HCC-related-miRNAs and,
eventually, to report the latest finding on several miRNAs involved in HCC angiogenesis. We searched the state of the arts for the 12 miRNAs
found to be involved with angiogenesis in HCC (miR-29b, miR-126-3p, miR-144-3p, miR-146a, miR-195, miR-199a-3p, miR-210-3p, miR-338-
3p, mir-491, mir-497, mir-638, mir-1301) and reported their main molecular targets and their overall effect in the sprouting of new vessels

Using sport media contact to promote gender equality: counter-stereotypical gender perceptions and 2019 FIFA Women’s world cup
By relying on literature on counter-stereotypes and media contact, we investigated whether media exposure is associated with counter-stereotypical gender perceptions. Focusing on the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, we recruited samples (N = 2,228) from eight competing countries (China, France, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Spain, England, US) across three continents. We hypothesized that exposure to media coverage of the competition’s counter-stereotypical female exemplars would be associated with increased counter-stereotypical perceptions of women. Results revealed that media exposure was associated with greater communion and agency attributed to women. In turn, communion and agency were associated (negatively and positively, respectively) with attribution of stereotypically male abilities (abilities to engage in stereotypically male academic disciplines and jobs) to women compared to men. No effects emerged for perceptions of stereotypically female characteristics. Gender moderated these effects, with associations being stronger among male than among female respondents. Theoretical and practical implications of findings are discussed.Immediate accessThis item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries. Circulatory miRNA as a Biomarker for Therapy Response and Disease-Free Survival in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
The clinical outcome of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment remains unsatisfactory, contributing to the high mortality of HCC worldwide. Circulating miRNAs have the potential to be a predictor of therapy response. Microarray profiling was performed in serum samples of 20 HCC patients before treatment. Circulating miRNAs associated with treatment response were validated in 86 serum HCC samples using the qRT-PCR system. Patients were treated either with curative treatments (resection or radiofrequency) or trans-arterial chemoembolization (TACE), and grouped according to therapy response in complete responders (CR) and partial responders or progressive disease (PRPD), following mRECIST criteria. Four miRNA candidates from the discovery phase (miR-4443, miR-4454, miR-4492, and miR-4530) were validated. Before therapy, miR-4454 and miR-4530 were up-regulated in CR to curative treatments (2.83 fold, p = 0.02 and 2.33 fold, p = 0.008, respectively) and were able to differentiate CR from PRPD (area under the curve (AUC) = 0.74, sens/spec 79/63% and AUC = 0.77, sens/spec 72/73%). On the contrary, miR-4443 was 1.95 times down-regulated in CR (p = 0.05) with an AUC of 0.72 (sens = 70%, spec = 60%) in distinguishing CR vs. PRPD. The combination of the three miRNAs was able to predict the response to curative treatment with an AUC of 0.84 (sens = 72%, spec = 75%). The higher levels of miR-4454 and miR-4530 in were associated to longer overall survival (HR = 2.79, p = 0.029 and HR = 2.97, p = 0.011, respectively). Before TACE, miR-4492 was significantly up-regulated in CR patients (FC = 2.67, p = 0.01) and able to differentiate CR from PRPD (AUC = 0.84, sens/spec 84.6/71%). We demonstrated that different miRNAs predictors can be used as potential prognostic circulating biomarkers according to the selected treatment for HCC
