    Diversity and Conservation Gap Analysis of the Solanaceae of Southern South America

    There is a need to make substantial advances in the taxonomic, systematic, and distribution knowledge of plants, and find better ways of transmission of this information to society to surpass the general pattern described as “plant blindness.” The diversity of the plant family Solanaceae reaches its peak in South America; however, many of its species are threatened due to the expansion of the human footprint. Here, we examine the diversity patterns of the family in southern South America (Argentina and Chile) by means of species richness (SR), weighted endemism (WE), and corrected weighted endemism (CWE). We also evaluated conservation gaps in relation to protected areas and the human footprint as a proxy for potential impacts on this biodiversity. Results show two richness centers in NW and NE Argentina, with a high degree of overlap with protected areas, which, on the other side, show a relative high index of human footprint. Comparatively, coastal Atacama (Chile) shows lower richness values, but outstanding CWE and WE values. The coast of Atacama harbors high values due the presence of species of the genus Nolana with restricted distributions. Protected areas in this tight coastal strip are sparse, and the human footprint is also relatively high. The degree of protection based on these parameters is then unbalanced, highlighting the need for a geographically explicit strategy for the conservation of the family at subcontinental scale.     Estrategia didáctica para promover la modelación matemática en un contexto educativo en base a competencias

    En la presente investigación se muestran los resultados de un trabajo sobre modelación matemática como preparación de instrumentos, secuencias didácticas para promover la modelación matemática en un contexto educativo en base a competencias, que permitan aplicar un tratamiento a un grupo de estudiantes, la investigación se fundamenta a partir de la teoría de representaciones semióticas (Duval, 2006), haciendo énfasis en el uso diversos registros de representación, ya que es necesario estudiar los conceptos matemáticos desde sus diversos registros de representación (Camarena, 2006), tales como el registro numérico, gráfico y algebraico; además de observar el uso del concepto de la derivada como razón de cambio u optimización. Para lograrlo se diseñaron las secuencias didácticas y se validaron por medio de talleres en los que se observo como los estudiantes las podían desarrollar y que problemática les generaba, de esta forma se pudieron mejorar para desarrollar el tratamiento que se le dará a los grupos que participaran en el experimento, los cuales serán de primer semestre y estarán cursando la materia de matemáticas 1 “calculo diferencial” en el periodo Agosto-Diciembre de 2017

    A presencialidade remota na perspectiva de alunos e professores: uma análise da Divisão de Educação para o Trabalho da Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica

    Higher education is facing a methodological update due to the changes caused by the health crisis generated by the virus responsible for COVID-19; consequently, the Division of Education for Work at Universidad Nacional seeks to analyze the context and the pedagogical mediation arising since 2020 from the student and teacher perspective. Three core elements are analyzed within the framework of a naturalistic paradigm from an exploratory methodology to identify the advantages and disadvantages of working in a remote face-to-face modality, as well as the possible adjustments to be made in an eventual face-to-face return and the modality preference of the participants in this training process. Regarding these three main results, advantages are highlighted, indicated by both the students and the teaching staff, which are presented at a personal, family, economic, quality of life, and health level, in addition to academic aspects, such as the development of skills, capacities for professional life and for the continuity of vocational projects, among others. The disadvantages refer to household activities, multitasking, ergonomic conditions, social interaction, and connectivity. In addition, within the eventual adjustments, we have: working conditions, the ability to adapt to change, scheduled organization, and the economic situation. The study concludes that the impact of the virus responsible for Covid-19, in the medium-to-long term, in university life is inevitable, and its scope will affect the institutional organization, teaching practices, and bonding between the ones involved.La educación universitaria se enfrenta a una actualización metodológica ante los cambios suscitados por la crisis sanitaria generada por el virus responsable de la COVID-19, por tal razón desde la División de Educación para el Trabajo en la Universidad Nacional, se busca realizar un análisis del contexto y la mediación pedagógica suscitada a partir del 2020 y desde la perspectiva estudiantil y docente.  Se analizan tres elementos medulares en el marco de un paradigma naturalista desde una metodología exploratoria, para identificar las ventajas y desventajas del trabajo en modalidad presencial remota, así como los posibles ajustes por realizarse en un eventual retorno presencial y la preferencia de modalidad de las personas participantes en este proceso de formación. Respecto a estos tres principales resultados se destacan ventajas señaladas tanto por el estudiantado como por el personal docente, las cuales se presentan a nivel personal, familiar, económico, de calidad de vida y salud, además de aspectos académicos, tal como el desarrollo de habilidades y capacidades para la vida profesional y para la continuidad de proyectos vocacionales, entre otros. Las desventajas se refieren a actividades domésticas, tareas múltiples, condiciones ergonómicas, interacción social y la conectividad. Además, dentro de los eventuales ajustes señalados están las condiciones laborales, la capacidad de adaptación al cambio, a la organización de horarios y de lo económico. El estudio concluye que el impacto del virus responsable de la Covid-19, a mediano y largo plazo, en la vida universitaria es inevitable y sus alcances afectarán la forma de organización institucional, la entrega de la docencia y los vínculos relacionales de sus miembros. O ensino universitário enfrenta uma atualização metodológica devido às mudanças provocadas pela crise sanitária gerada pelo vírus responsável pelo COVID-19, por isso a Divisão de Educação para o Trabalho da Universidade Nacional procura realizar uma análise contextual e pedagógica do tipo de mediação que surge a partir de 2020 na perspectiva do aluno e do professor. Três elementos centrais foram analisados ​​sob um paradigma naturalístico e a partir de uma metodologia exploratória, para identificar as vantagens e desvantagens de se trabalhar na modalidade presencial remota, bem como os possíveis ajustes a serem feitos em uma eventual volta ao presencial e a preferência de modalidade das pessoas participantes neste processo formativo. Em relação a esses três  resultados centrais, destacam-se vantagens, apontadas tanto pelo corpo discente quanto pelo corpo docente, que se apresentam ao nível pessoal, familiar, econômico, de qualidade de vida e de saúde, além de aspectos acadêmicos, como o desenvolvimento de aptidões e capacidades para a vida profissional e para a continuidade de projetos profissionais, entre outros.     Opportunistic screening for atrial fibrillation versus detecting symptomatic patients aged 65 years and older: a cluster-controlled clinical trial.

    Objective: The goal of this study was to assess the effectiveness of opportunistic screening through pulse palpation in the early detection of atrial fibrillation in subjects aged ≥ 65 years versus detection through an active search for patients with symptoms and/or complications and sequelae associated. -Material and methods: This was a cluster randomized controlled trial performed in 48 primary care centers of the Spanish National Healthcare System. A total of 368 physicians and nurses were randomized. The researchers in the Experimental Group (EG) performed opportunistic screening for auricular fibrillation, whereas the researchers in the Control Group (CG) actively searched for symptomatic patients. An ECG was performed on patients found to have an irregular heartbeat to confirm the diagnosis of auricular fibrillation. -Results: A total of 5,465 patients with a mean age of 75.61 were recruited for the EG, and 1,525 patients with a mean age of 74.07 were recruited for the CG. Of these, 58.6% were female, without significant differences between groups. Pulse was irregular in 4.3% and 15.0% of the patients in the EG and the CG, respectively (p<0.001). A total of 165 new cases of atrial fibrillation were detected (2.3%), 1.1% in the EG and 6.7% in the CG (adjusted OR: 0.29; 95%CI: 0.18-0.45). -Conclusions: Case finding for atrial fibrilation in patients aged ≥ 65 years with symptoms or signs suggestive of atrial fibrilation is a more effective strategy than opportunistic screening through pulse palpation in asymptomatic patients.pre-print325 K

    Six priorities to advance the science and practice of coral reef restoration worldwide

    Coral reef restoration is a rapidly growing movement galvanized by the accelerating degradation of the world's tropical coral reefs. The need for concerted and collaborative action focused on the recovery of coral reef ecosystems coalesced in the creation of the Coral Restoration Consortium (CRC) in 2017. In March 2020, the CRC leadership team met for a biennial review of international coral reef restoration efforts and a discussion of perceived knowledge and implementation bottlenecks that may impair scalability and efficacy. Herein we present six priorities wherein the CRC will foster scientific advancement and collaboration to: (1) increase restoration efficiency, focusing on scale and cost-effectiveness of deployment; (2) scale up larval-based coral restoration efforts, emphasizing recruit health, growth, and survival; (3) ensure restoration of threatened coral species proceeds within a population-genetics management context; (4) support a holistic approach to coral reef ecosystem restoration; (5) develop and promote the use of standardized terms and metrics for coral reef restoration; and (6) support coral reef restoration practitioners working in diverse geographic locations. These priorities are not exhaustive nor do we imply that accomplishing these tasks alone will be sufficient to restore coral reefs globally; rather these are topics where we feel the CRC community of practice can make timely and significant contributions to facilitate the growth of coral reef restoration as a practical conservation strategy. The goal for these collective actions is to provide tangible, local-scale advancements in reef condition that offset declines resulting from local and global stressors including climate change
