    The Influence of Spanish within the Identity of Chicano Children: Discourse analysis in Rudolfo Anaya, Sandra Cisneros, Mario Alberto Zambrano, and Erika Sanchez

    The field of Mexican-American literature, also known as Chicano literature, is known for the usage of Spanish within the texts as this makes the text feel more authentic to the Hispanic life. Established authors, Rudolfo Anaya and Sandra Cisneros, have influenced new recent award-winning Chicano voices, Erika Sánchez and Mario Alberto Zambrano. Thus, the representation of the Chicano world that these authors are providing needs to be examined as they are and will be influencing the voice of future Chicano works. Their usage of Spanish within the texts is crucial to the telling of the story and the development of the protagonist within the novel. The variety of Spanish that is presented in these texts can take different forms: standard Spanish, slang, code-switching between English and Spanish, and translation for the reader. These different forms can reveal the characters’ relationship with Spanish and how it impacts the way that they see the world. In this paper, I focus on the dialogue between elders and children from selected works to reveal how the children’s use of Spanish reflects on their relationship with their Hispanic identity. These conversations will be the focus since it is through their elders that they have this relationship with Spanish. These conversations will reveal if the child considers Spanish to be a part of their being and what form of Spanish they have taken in as their own. The outcome of this research is to find if, and if so, how Spanish has influenced the identity of Chicanos in the United States

    The relative effect of altitude and aspect on saxicolous lichen communities at mountain summits from central-west of Argentina

    The altitudinal patterns of lichen communities in altitudinal gradients are very variable. The changes that occur along the mountains depend on climatic factors but also on microsite variables such as substrate type and aspect. The effect of altitude and aspect on richness, cover and composition of saxicolous lichens communities along an elevation gradient in extra Andean mountains from the central-west of Argentina was studied. Rock outcrops on the north and south aspect of three mountain summits distributed between 2,500 and 4,500 m.a.s.l. were sampled. Lichen species present in a 20 × 20 cm square were identified and the relative cover was measured using digital photography. Richness, cover and composition were analyzed through linear models and multivariate analysis. Fifty-eight saxicolous lichen species were identified between the three sites. Richness and cover were maximum at middle altitude. Also compositional differences among communities of each mountain summit were found.     Este trabajo presenta los resultados del estudio realizado a docentes del área matemática de una unidad académica universitaria argentina respecto a la actitud y la capacitación recibida, sobre la implementación de aulas virtuales como complemento del aula presencial. La investigación tuvo un enfoque mixto y alcances exploratorio, descriptivo y explicativo. Los datos recogidos se procesaron con las herramientas de la estadística descriptiva y del análisis cualitativo. Las conclusiones indican que, si bien los docentes tienen una actitud medianamente favorable para desarrollar el proceso educativo utilizando aulas virtuales, el impacto de la capacitación recibida sobre el procedimiento para hacerlo, ha sido bajo

    Transcriptome analysis of a cnidarian – dinoflagellate mutualism reveals complex modulation of host gene expression

    BACKGROUND: Cnidarian – dinoflagellate intracellular symbioses are one of the most important mutualisms in the marine environment. They form the trophic and structural foundation of coral reef ecosystems, and have played a key role in the evolutionary radiation and biodiversity of cnidarian species. Despite the prevalence of these symbioses, we still know very little about the molecular modulators that initiate, regulate, and maintain the interaction between these two different biological entities. In this study, we conducted a comparative host anemone transcriptome analysis using a cDNA microarray platform to identify genes involved in cnidarian – algal symbiosis. RESULTS: We detected statistically significant differences in host gene expression profiles between sea anemones (Anthopleura elegantissima) in a symbiotic and non-symbiotic state. The group of genes, whose expression is altered, is diverse, suggesting that the molecular regulation of the symbiosis is governed by changes in multiple cellular processes. In the context of cnidarian – dinoflagellate symbioses, we discuss pivotal host gene expression changes involved in lipid metabolism, cell adhesion, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and oxidative stress. CONCLUSION: Our data do not support the existence of symbiosis-specific genes involved in controlling and regulating the symbiosis. Instead, it appears that the symbiosis is maintained by altering expression of existing genes involved in vital cellular processes. Specifically, the finding of key genes involved in cell cycle progression and apoptosis have led us to hypothesize that a suppression of apoptosis, together with a deregulation of the host cell cycle, create a platform that might be necessary for symbiont and/or symbiont-containing host cell survival. This first comprehensive molecular examination of the cnidarian – dinoflagellate associations provides critical insights into the maintenance and regulation of the symbiosis
