Falling Through the Cracks: Homeless Youth Need Natural Mentors
The current Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which contains the most recent reauthorization of the McKinney Vento Act (M-V), places a focus on homeless youth that is intended to facilitate access to K-12 education, higher education and eliminate barriers in-between the two. Through each reauthorization of the McKinney Vento Act since its enactment in 1987, homeless youth have gained more and more access to key school personnel and academic support. Yet homeless youth still face barriers to accessing education and postsecondary success. Currently homeless liaisons, specially designated people in K-12 settings, work daily to assist youth who are homeless with issues surrounding barriers to housing, transportation, public education and higher education access. This paper examines homeless liaisons along with other school personnel as natural mentors with practices found in the McKinney Vento Act to support this vulnerable, invisible population with appropriate steps to eliminate the youth homeless to adult homeless pipeline.Educatio
Educational mismatches in the EU: immigrants vs native
The purpose of this paper is to analyse and explain the factors contributing to the observed differences in skill mismatches (vertical and horizontal) between natives and immigrants in EU countries. Using microdata from the 2007 wave of the Adult Education Survey (AES), different probit models are specified and estimated to analyse differences in the probability of each type of skill mismatch between natives and immigrants. Yun's decomposition method is used to identify the relative contribution of characteristics and returns to explain the differences between the two groups. Findings: Immigrants are more likely to be skill mismatched than natives. The difference is much larger for vertical mismatch, wherein the difference is higher for immigrants coming from non-EU countries than for those coming from other EU countries. We find that immigrants from non-EU countries are less valued in EU labour markets than natives with similar characteristics -a result that is not observed for immigrants from EU countries. These results could be related to the limited transferability of human capital acquired in non-EU countries. Social implications: The findings suggest that specific programs to adapt immigrants' human capital acquired in the home country are required to reduce differences in the incidence of skill mismatch and better integration into EU labour markets. Originality: This research is original, because it distinguishes between horizontal and vertical mismatch -an issue that has not been considered in the literature on differences between native and immigrant workers- and due to the wide geographical scope of our analysis, which considers EU and non EU-countries
Conflictividad y empoderamiento asociados a la búsqueda de una movilidad no motorizada en Guadalajara
En este trabajo se exponen las primeras reflexiones que surgen al analizar los conflictos que se dan al interior de los grupos y entre los diversos colectivos que reivindican el uso de la bicicleta en Guadalajara. Al buscar objetivos diferentes y al partir de diversas perspectivas sobre lo que significa utilizar este medio de transporte, se van generando distanciamientos y desacuerdos entre los actores vinculados a este movimiento, que repercuten en la consolidación de una cultura ciclista en esta ciudad. Tomando en cuenta que una de las pretensiones que se persiguen con la investigación que realiza el Centro de Investigación y Formación Social del ITESO consiste en generar conocimientos aplicables para aquellos procesos que buscan la transformación social o que construyen alternativas a la actual crisis del desarrollo que vivimos a nivel planetario, entendemos que los conflictos que se dan en torno al uso público de la bicicleta, lejos de ser un problema, son oportunidades para construir esas alternativas. A partir de información recabada en el diálogo con diferentes actores vinculados al ciclismo, se presentan en este trabajo algunas ideas que surgen en relación con estas temáticas.ITESO, A.C
Educar para la paz y los conflictos en la universidad
En este trabajo se reflexiona y comparte lo que ha sido la experiencia acumulada en casi siete años de impartir en la universidad materias relacionadas con la Paz y los Derechos Humanos. La ponencia está estructurada en torno a siete aspectos: supuestos en los que se fundamenta la Educación para la Paz y los Conflictos; intenciones que se persiguen al instalarla en el ámbito universitario; contenidos y métodos utilizados; limitaciones al ponerla en marcha, y resultados obtenidos. Finalmente, algunas reflexiones respecto de la evaluación en este tipo de asignaturas.ITESO, A.C
Conflict and empowerment in bikers groups from Guadalajara
This paper is the final report resulting from having dabbled in the analysis of the conflicts that arise within groups and between the various groups that claim the use of bicycles in Guadalajara, and the context in which they develop. When looking for different purposes and from different perspectives on what it means to use this means of transport, are generated rifts and disagreements among the stakeholders involved in this movement, with implications for theconsolidation of a cycling culture in the city. Considering that one of the claims pursued with such studies is to generate knowledge relevant for those seeking processes that build social transformation or alternatives to the current development crisis that we live on a global level, we understand that conflicts given on the use of bicycles in public spaces, far from being a problem, are opportunities to build such alternatives. From information gathered in the dialogue with stakeholders related to cycling in Guadalajara, presented below are some ideas that arise in relation to these issues

A partir de reflexionar sobre el papel que ha jugado la intuición en su propia práctica, el autor logra identificar seis procesos que han marcado el quehacer educativo a lo largo de su historia. Relaciona tales procesos con los temas y problemas propios de los Derechos Humanos y la Paz, para mostrar de qué manera la intuición surge de la reflexión personal y el cuestionamiento permanente, la búsqueda de innovación y la sistematización cuidadosa de lo que se hace, así como de la imaginación creativa y la reflexión teórica. Si el objetivo que se persigue es instalar en la mente y en los corazones de las personas los valores de la paz con justicia y dignidad, tendríamos que hacerle más caso a esos “chispazos” o “corazonadas” que surgen al hacer educación.ITESO, A.C
