Limits of European Citizenship: European Integration and Domestic Immigration Policies
This paper studies the distribution and legitimisation of civil, political and social entitlements to non-citizens resident within the territory of EU member states. Is national citizenship indeed no longer imperative to membership in the national political community? Apart from trying to assess the meaning of European citizenship, it is also a test-case for the effect of 'Europe' on the domestic incorporation of migrants. By analysing parliamentary debates from the 1990s on the status of Union citizens and third country nationals in the Netherlands, the paper demonstrates the accidental and arbitrary nature of European citizenship.European citizenship; European elections; European identity; Europeanization; free movement; immigration policy; implementation; minorities; Netherlands; reverse discrimination
Dynamic System Adaptation by Constraint Orchestration
For Paradigm models, evolution is just-in-time specified coordination
conducted by a special reusable component McPal. Evolution can be treated
consistently and on-the-fly through Paradigm's constraint orchestration, also
for originally unforeseen evolution. UML-like diagrams visually supplement such
migration, as is illustrated for the case of a critical section solution
evolving into a pipeline architecture.Comment: 19 page
The Kinematics of Kepler's Supernova Remnant as revealed by Chandra
I determine the expansion of the supernova remnant of SN1604 (Kepler's
supernova) based on archival Chandra ACIS-S observations made in 2000 and 2006.
The measurements were done in several distinct energy bands, and were made for
the remnant as a whole, and for six individual sectors. The average expansion
parameter indicates that the remnant expands as , but there
are significant differences in different parts of the remnant: the bright
northwestern part expands as , whereas the rest of the
remnant's expansion shows an expansion . The latter is
consistent with an explosion in which the outer part of the ejecta has a
negative power law slope for density () of , or with
an exponential density profile(). The expansion
parameter in the southern region, in conjunction with the shock radius,
indicate a rather low value (<5E50 erg) for the explosion energy of SN1604 for
a distance of 4 kpc. An higher explosion energy is consistent with the results,
if the distance is larger.
The filament in the eastern part of the remnant, which is dominated by X-ray
synchrotron radiation seems to mark a region with a fast shock speed , corresponding to a shock velocity of v= 4200 km/s, for a distance to
SN1604 of 4 kpc. This is consistent with the idea that X-ray synchrotron
emission requires shock velocities in excess of ~2000 km/s.
The X-ray based expansion measurements reported are consistent with results
based on optical and radio measurements, but disagree with previous X-ray
measurements based on ROSAT and Einstein observations.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. This new version is the accepted

Simulation and theory of fluid demixing and interfacial tension of mixtures of colloids and non-ideal polymers
An extension of the Asakura-Oosawa-Vrij model of hard sphere colloids and
non-adsorbing polymers, that takes polymer non-ideality into account through a
repulsive stepfunction pair potential between polymers, is studied with grand
canonical Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory. Simulation
results validate previous theoretical findings for the shift of the bulk fluid
demixing binodal upon increasing strength of polymer-polymer repulsion,
promoting the tendency to mix. For increasing strength of the polymer-polymer
repulsion, simulation and theory consistently predict the interfacial tension
of the free colloidal liquid-gas interface to decrease significantly for fixed
colloid density difference in the coexisting phases, and to increase for fixed
polymer reservoir packing fraction.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Bisimulation of Labelled State-to-Function Transition Systems Coalgebraically
Labeled state-to-function transition systems, FuTS for short, are
characterized by transitions which relate states to functions of states over
general semirings, equipped with a rich set of higher-order operators. As such,
FuTS constitute a convenient modeling instrument to deal with process languages
and their quantitative extensions in particular. In this paper, the notion of
bisimulation induced by a FuTS is addressed from a coalgebraic point of view. A
correspondence result is established stating that FuTS-bisimilarity coincides
with behavioural equivalence of the associated functor. As generic examples,
the equivalences underlying substantial fragments of major examples of
quantitative process algebras are related to the bisimilarity of specific FuTS.
The examples range from a stochastic process language, PEPA, to a language for
Interactive Markov Chains, IML, a (discrete) timed process language, TPC, and a
language for Markov Automata, MAL. The equivalences underlying these languages
are related to the bisimilarity of their specific FuTS. By the correspondence
result coalgebraic justification of the equivalences of these calculi is
obtained. The specific selection of languages, besides covering a large variety
of process interaction models and modelling choices involving quantities,
allows us to show different classes of FuTS, namely so-called simple FuTS,
combined FuTS, nested FuTS, and general FuTS
Combining Insertion and Deletion in RNA-editing Preserves Regularity
Inspired by RNA-editing as occurs in transcriptional processes in the living
cell, we introduce an abstract notion of string adjustment, called guided
rewriting. This formalism allows simultaneously inserting and deleting
elements. We prove that guided rewriting preserves regularity: for every
regular language its closure under guided rewriting is regular too. This
contrasts an earlier abstraction of RNA-editing separating insertion and
deletion for which it was proved that regularity is not preserved. The
particular automaton construction here relies on an auxiliary notion of slice
sequence which enables to sweep from left to right through a completed rewrite
sequence.Comment: In Proceedings MeCBIC 2012, arXiv:1211.347
Scheurkelken in Longiflorum-lelies : voortgezet diagnostisch onderzoek uitgevoerd in 2006/2007
Characteristics of the agricultural sector of the 21st Century
The objective of this paper is to identify some of the salient characteristics of agriculture in the new millennium. The driving force behind economic change is technology and information, and information and knowledge will replace land, labour and capital as the sources of wealth in agriculture. The resultant cognitive-technical complex in farm production will lead to the true industrialisation of farming and thus placing the traditional family farmer at a distinct disadvantage. Technology developments combined with inverse population growth and ageing population, will not only negate Malthusian visions, but also lead to downward pressure on farm commodity prices, and thus increase the adoption rates of new technology. However, in reaction to the increasingly complex nature of modern society a demand is developing for terroir-based products. This range of products may not only significantly change some characteristics of agriculture, but also provide a new set of opportunities for farmers. Agricultural policy and development strategies should also be reconsidered in the light of this new environment.Agricultural and Food Policy,
