Hot and Cold IPO Markets: The case of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to assess the characteristics of the hot and cold IPO markets on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius. The results show that the hot issues exhibit, on average, a greater degree of underpricing than the cold issues, although the hot issue phenomenon is not a significant driving force in explaining this short-run underpricing. The results are consistent with the predictions of the changing risk composition hypothesis in suggesting that firms going public during hot markets are on average relatively more risky. The findings also support the time adverse selection hypothesis in that the firms' quality dispersion is statistically different between hot and cold markets. Finally, the study concludes that firms which go public during hot markets do not underperform those going public in cold markets over the longer term

A low cost 'activities of daily living' assessment system for the continual assessment of post-stroke patients, from inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation through to telerehabilitation

Research regarding telerehabilitation for stroke patientsā€™ places little emphasis on monitoring and assessment. To effectively monitor a patient, assessment must be continuous; from the inpatient/outpatient setting, to the remote. However, assessment methods used by Occupational Therapistsā€™ can be qualitative and difficult to automate for a remote location. The aim of this research is to develop a system which presents the Occupational Therapist with a tool that, whilst not altering current routine, provides Range of Motion (ROM) analysis from current and previous rehabilitation sessions. Amalgamated data can then be achieved through the use of the same prototype in a remote location. Results from the prototype are outputted in graphical format, detailing movement throughout the session. The system details minimum and maximum extremities of patient ROM throughout all sessions and can be compared with the ROM required to perform certain activities of daily living. This prototype system allows the therapist to continue traditional rehabilitation, whilst providing graphical feedback over time, including detailed ADL assessment. If then used by the patient in a remote location, movements can be analysed and reported to the therapist. The prototype provides visual feedback, helping to increase motivation, whilst providing data that can generate adaptable rehabilitation programs

A deformable surface model for soft volume simulation

    No full text
This paper introduces a surface alternative to the volume model commonly employed in soft object simulation. This is inspired by a significant interest in employing the surface data due to its simplicity. However, there are issues in properties estimation and volume preservation. Therefore, the aim of the ongoing research includes exploring the potential of a surface mass spring model with shape-preserving springs for volume simulation. The approach illustrates the possibility of deriving the spring stiffness at runtime based on the real material properties as well as achieving a global shape deformation despite the non-existence of internal volume. The proposed scheme can be further explored to address other material properties

This paper discusses the possibility of employing a surface model to emulate volume behaviour. This is inspired by a significant interest in employing the surface data due to its simplicity. However, there are issues in properties estimation and volume preservation. Therefore, the aim of the ongoing research includes exploring the potential of a surface mass spring model with shape-preserving springs for volume simulation. Initial evaluations illustrate the feasibility of employing a mass spring model with volume preserving springs to simulate the dynamic behaviour of a soft volume. The proposed framework can be further explored to address other material properties

An exploratory study of financial priorities, financial planning and control practices in voluntary organisations: Perceptions of treasurers in a developing country

    No full text
Purpose: This study seeks to explore the financial priorities, financial planning and control practices in locally-established voluntary organisations (LVOs) in a developing country context. Design/methodology/approach: Two data collection methods are used to gather views from the LVO treasurers: a questionnaire survey and face-to-face interviews. Findings: Treasurers are less focused on priorities involving internal planning and control and are found to be using financial planning and control practices to a limited and seemingly unsophisticated extent. In consideration of the theoretical implications of organizational legitimacy, overall findings suggest that internal practices are: extensively used to convey a symbolic message of rationality, in the pursuit of a pragmatic or a moral form of legitimacy towards a defined funding body or towards a perceived internal target audience, respectively; used in a limited and informal way due to their perceived inappropriateness in legitimating organizations, in ā€œdeferenceā€ to the voluntary organizations' (VO) primary social objectives; or are virtually inexistent, due to the strong influence of trust embedded in an ā€œemotional-ledā€ context, thereby explaining the irrelevance of financial/control practices ā€“ even for symbolic reasons. Research limitations/implications: The questionnaire response rate has been relatively low but the findings are enhanced by the diversity of organizations which participated in the questionnaire and interview stages. Originality/value: This study focuses on locally established organizations in a developing country context, which are typically less subjected to VO regulation and are ā€œmanagedā€ by (unpaid) volunteers. The interviews involved a cross-section of LVOs, which has been instrumental in contemplating the potential relevance of the legitimacy perspective.<br/
