Commissioning of the CNGS Extraction in SPS LSS4
The CNGS project (CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso) aims at directly detecting νμ - Î½Ï oscillations. For this purpose an intense νμ beam is generated at CERN and directed towards LNGS (Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso) in Italy, about 730 km from CERN. The neutrinos are generated from the decay of pions and kaons which are produced by 400 GeV protons hitting a graphite target. The protons are extracted from the SPS straight section 4 (LSS4) in two 10.5 ïs batches, nominally 2.4 Ñ 1013 protons each, at an interval of 50 ms. The high intensity extracted beam can cause damage to equipment if lost in an uncontrolled way, with the extraction elements particularly at risk. In addition, the beam losses at extraction must be very well controlled to avoid unacceptably high levels of radiation. To guarantee safe operation and limit radiation, the LSS4 extraction system was thoroughly commissioned with beam during the CNGS commissioning in summer 2006. The obtained results in terms of aperture in the extraction channel, longitudinal loss patterns, extraction losses and radiation during nominal operation are summarised in this note
Indirect Self-Modulation Instability Measurement Concept for the AWAKE Proton Beam
AWAKE, the Advanced Proton-Driven Plasma Wakefield Acceleration Experiment,
is a proof-of-principle R&D experiment at CERN using a 400 GeV/c proton beam
from the CERN SPS (longitudinal beam size sigma_z = 12 cm) which will be sent
into a 10 m long plasma section with a nominal density of approx. 7x10^14
atoms/cm3 (plasma wavelength lambda_p = 1.2mm). In this paper we show that by
measuring the time integrated transverse profile of the proton bunch at two
locations downstream of the AWAKE plasma, information about the occurrence of
the self-modulation instability (SMI) can be inferred. In particular we show
that measuring defocused protons with an angle of 1 mrad corresponds to having
electric fields in the order of GV/m and fully developed self-modulation of the
proton bunch. Additionally, by measuring the defocused beam edge of the
self-modulated bunch, information about the growth rate of the instability can
be extracted. If hosing instability occurs, it could be detected by measuring a
non-uniform defocused beam shape with changing radius. Using a 1 mm thick
Chromox scintillation screen for imaging of the self-modulated proton bunch, an
edge resolution of 0.6 mm and hence a SMI saturation point resolution of 1.2 m

Design Considerations for the PS2 Beam Dumps
The different beam dump functionalities required for the proposed PS2 machine and its transfer lines are briefly described, followed by first estimates about the expected beam loads. This data has been taken as input for comparing the different technical options for the dump systems, in particular to simulate the radiological impact for internal or external beam dump options. The numbers derived have been used to help decide which of the feasible technical alternatives are preferred
High Intensity Commissioning of the SPS LSS4 extraction for CNGS
The SPS LSS4 fast extraction system will serve both the anti-clockwise ring of the LHC and the CERN Gran Sasso Neutrino project (CNGS). CNGS requires 2 fast extractions of 10.5 microsecond long batches, 50 milliseconds apart. Each batch will consist of 2.4 × 1013 protons at 400 GeV. These intensities are factor of 10 above the equipment damage limit in case of beam loss. Active (interlock system) and passive protection systems have to be in place to guarantee safe operation and to respect the radiation limits in zones close to the extraction region. In summer 2006 CNGS was commissioned including extraction with high intensity. A thorough setting-up of the CNGS extraction was carried out as part of the CNGS commissioning, including aperture and beam loss measurements, and defining and checking of interlock thresholds for extraction trajectory, beam loss monitors and radiation monitors. The relevant systems and risks are introduced in this paper, the commissioning results are summarised and comparisons with simulation predictions are presented
Beam Loss Control for the Unstripped Ions from the PS2 Charge Exchange Injection
Control of beam losses is an important aspect of the H-injection system for the PS2, a proposed replacement of the CPS in the CERN injector complex. H- ions may pass the foil unstripped or be partially stripped to excited H0 states which may be stripped in the subsequent strong-field chicane magnet. Depending on the choice of the magnetic field, atoms in the ground and first excited states can be extracted and dumped. The conceptual design of the waste beam handling is presented, including local collimation and the dump line, both of which must take into account the divergence of the beam from stripping in fringe fields. Beam load estimates and activation related requirements of the local collimators and dump are briefly discussed
In vitro culture of Plasmodium berghei-ANKA maintains infectivity of mouse erythrocytes inducing cerebral malaria
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Infection with <it>Plasmodium berghei </it>is a widely used model of murine malaria and a powerful tool for reverse genetic and pathogenesis studies. However, the efficacy of <it>in vitro </it>reinvasion of erythrocytes is generally low, limiting <it>in vitro </it>studies.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p><it>Plasmodium berghei </it>ANKA-infected blood obtained from a susceptible infected mouse was cultured in various conditions and <it>in vitro </it>parasitaemia was measured every day to evaluate the rate of reinvasion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>High quality culture media were used and reinvasion rates were improved by vigorous orbital shaking of the flask and increasing density of the medium with gelatin.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Using these settings, reinvasion of normal mouse erythrocytes by the parasite was obtained <it>in vitro </it>over two weeks with preservation of the infectivity <it>in vivo</it>.</p
The helium atom in a strong magnetic field
We investigate the electronic structure of the helium atom in a magnetic
field b etween B=0 and B=100a.u. The atom is treated as a nonrelativistic
system with two interactin g electrons and a fixed nucleus. Scaling laws are
provided connecting the fixed-nucleus Hamiltonia n to the one for the case of
finite nuclear mass. Respecting the symmetries of the electronic Ham iltonian
in the presence of a magnetic field, we represent this Hamiltonian as a matrix
with res pect to a two-particle basis composed of one-particle states of a
Gaussian basis set. The corresponding generalized eigenvalue problem is solved
numerically, providing in the present paper results for vanish ing magnetic
quantum number M=0 and even or odd z-parity, each for both singlet and triplet
spin symmetry. Total electronic energies of the ground state and the first few
excitations in each su bspace as well as their one-electron ionization energies
are presented as a function of the magnetic fie ld, and their behaviour is
discussed. Energy values for electromagnetic transitions within the M=0 sub
space are shown, and a complete table of wavelengths at all the detected
stationary points with respect to their field dependence is given, thereby
providing a basis for a comparison with observed ab sorption spectra of

Prolonged intraperitoneal infusion of 5-fluorouracil using a novel carrier solution.
A novel peritoneal carrier solution, Icodextrin 20 (7.5%), has allowed exploration of prolonged, intraperitoneal (i.p.) infusion of the cytotoxic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). A phase I and pharmacokinetic study was performed to determine the toxicities and maximum tolerated dose of prolonged and continuous intraperitoneal 5-FU in patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Seventeen patients were entered into this study. Each patient had a Tenckhoff catheter placed into the peritoneal cavity under general anaesthetic. After initial flushing and gradual increase in exchange volumes with Icodextrin 20, 5-FU was administered daily from Monday to Friday, 50% as a bolus in the exchange bag and 50% in an elastomeric infusor device delivering continuous 5-FU to the peritoneal cavity at 2 ml h-1. Treatment was continued for 12 weeks or until intolerable toxicity developed. Abdominal pain and infective peritonitis proved to be the main dose-limiting toxicities. Initial problems with infective peritonitis were overcome by redesign of the delivery system, and it proved possible to deliver 300 mg m-2 5-FU daily (5 days per week) for 12 weeks. Pharmacokinetic studies showed i.p. steady-state 5-FU concentrations (mean 47 500 ng ml-1) that were > 1000-fold higher than systemic venous levels (mean 30 ng ml-1)
Using fuzzy PROMETHEE to select countries for developmental Aid
Wealthy nations continue to demonstrate their unwavering support to improving conditions and the general well-being of poor countries in spite of the recent economic crises. However, as developmental aid relatively shrinks, both Aid donors and recipient countries have shown keen interest in methodologies used in evaluating developmental assistance programs. Evaluation of aid programs is seen as a complex task mainly because of the several non-aid factors that tend to affect overall outcomes. Adding to the complexity are the subjective sets of criteria used in Aid evaluations programs. This paper proposes a two stage framework of fuzzy TOPSIS and sensitivity analysis to demonstrate how aid-recipient countries can be evaluated to deepen transparency, fairness, value for money and sustainability of such aid programs. Using the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) set of subjective criteria for evaluating aid programs; a numerical examplepre-defined by linguistic terms parameterized by triangular fuzzy numbers is provided to evaluate aid programs. Fuzzy PROMETHEE is used in the first stage to evaluate and rank aid-recipients followed by a comparative analysis with Fuzzy VIKOR and Fuzzy TOPSIS to ascertain an accurateness of the method used. A sensitivity analysis is further added that anticipates possible influences from lobbyists and examines the effect of that bias in expert ratings on the evaluation process. The result shows a framework that can be employed in evaluating aid effectiveness of recipient-countries
Isotope shift in the electron affinity of chlorine
The specific mass shift in the electron affinity between ^{35}Cl and ^{37}Cl
has been determined by tunable laser photodetachment spectroscopy to be
-0.51(14) GHz. The isotope shift was observed as a difference in the onset of
the photodetachment process for the two isotopes. In addition, the electron
affinity of Cl was found to be 29138.59(22) cm^{-1}, giving a factor of 2
improvement in the accuracy over earlier measurements. Many-body calculations
including lowest-order correlation effects demonstrates the sensitivity of the
specific mass shift and show that the inclusion of higher-order correlation
