    Modeling soil nitrate accumulation and leaching in conventional and conservation agriculture cropping systems

    Nitrate is a major groundwater inorganic contaminant that is mainly due to fertilizer leaching. Compost amendment can increase soils' organic substances and thus promote denitrification in intensively cultivated soils. In this study, two agricultural plots located in the Padana plain (Ferrara, Italy) were monitored and modeled for a period of 2.7 years. One plot was initially amended with 30 t/ha of compost, not tilled, and amended with standard fertilization practices, while the other one was run with standard fertilization and tillage practices. Monitoring was performed continuously via soil water probes (matric potential) and discontinuously via auger core profiles (major nitrogen species) before and after each cropping season. A HYDRUS-1D numerical model was calibrated and validated versus observed matric potential and nitrate, ammonium, and bromide (used as tracers). Model performance was judged satisfactory and the results provided insights on water and nitrogen balances for the two different agricultural practices tested here. While water balance and retention time in the vadose zone were similar in the two plots, nitrate leaching was less pronounced in the plot amended with compost due to a higher denitrification rate. This study provides clear evidence that compost addition and no-tillage (conservation agriculture) can diminish nitrate leaching to groundwater, with respect to standard agricultural practices

    A statistical approach for modeling individual vertical walking forces

    This paper proposes a statistical approach for modeling vertical walking forces induced by single pedestrians. To account for the random nature of human walking, the individual vertical walking force is modeled as a series of steps and the gait parameters are assumed to vary at each step. Walking parameters are statistically calibrated with respect to the results of experimental tests performed with a force plate system. Results showed that the walking parameters change during walking and are correlated with each other. The force model proposed in this paper is a step-by-step model based on the description of the multivariate distribution of the walking features through a Gaussian Mixture model. The performance of the proposed model is compared to that of a simplified load model and of two force models proposed in the literature in a numerical case study. Results demonstrate the importance of an accurate modeling of both the single step force and the variability of the individual walking force

    PEG reimplantation after Buried Bumper Syndrome: a case report

    Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the method of choice to provide long-term enteral nutrition for patients with impossibility to be fed orally. Although it is considered a routine and safe procedure, potential complications exist, which are generally classified into three major categories: endoscopic technical difficulties, PEG procedure-related complications and late complications associated with PEG tube use, such as buried bumper syndrome (BBS). BBS is a potentially life-threatening complication, occurring in 0.3% to 2.5% of cases. Additional complications related to BBS may present, such as wound infection, peritonitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. Once resolved the acute complication, an adequate feeding method should be prompted for the patient, among whom PEG remains of choice. After tissue inflammation, fibrosis may prevent a standard endoscopic procedure for the new implantation, therefore endoscopists should modulate procedures to obtain successful and safe results. A combined surgical-and endoscopic strategy could resolve implantation difficulties ensuring a safe and simple procedure.     Can the plasma PD-1 levels predict the presence and efficiency of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in patients with metastatic melanoma?

    Background: The immune response in melanoma patients is locally affected by presence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), generally divided into brisk, nonbrisk, and absent. Several studies have shown that a greater presence of TILs, especially brisk, in primary melanoma is associated with a better prognosis and higher survival rate. Patients and Methods: We investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) the correlation between PD-1 levels in plasma and the presence/absence of TILs in 28 patients with metastatic melanoma. Results: Low plasma PD-1 levels were correlated with brisk TILs in primary melanoma, whereas intermediate values correlated with the nonbrisk TILs, and high PD-1 levels with absent TILs. Although the low number of samples did not allow us to obtain a statistically significant correlation between the plasma PD-1 levels and the patients' overall survival depending on the absence/presence of TILs, the median survival of patients having brisk type TILs was 5 months higher than that of patients with absent and nonbrisk TILs. Conclusions: This work highlights the ability of measuring the plasma PD-1 levels in order to predict the prognosis of patients with untreated metastatic melanoma without a BRAF mutation at the time of diagnosis

    Citalopram-Induced Long QT Syndrome and the Mammalian Dive Reflex

    Abstract While SCUBA diving, a 44-year-old Caucasian patient had an abnormal cardiac rhythm, presumably Tor-sade de Pointes (TdP), during the initial descent to depth. Upon surfacing, she developed ventricular fibrillation and died. The patient had been treated for mild depression for nearly a year with citalopram 60 mg per day, a drug known to cause prolonged QT interval. She had also been treated with two potentially hepatotoxic drugs. Liver impairment causes selective loss of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C19 activity, the major pathway for metabolism of citalopram. The post mortem blood level of citalopram was 1300 ng/ mL. The patient was found to be an intermediate metabo-lizer via CYP2D6, the major pathway for metabolism of desmethylcitalopram; the level of which was also abnormally high. It is suggested that drug-induced long QT syndrome (DILQTS), caused by citalopram, combined with the mammalian dive reflex triggered malignant ventricular rhythms resulting in the patient&#39;s death. It is further suggested that, in general, the dive reflex increases the risk of fatal cardiac rhythms when the QT interval is prolonged by drugs.     Evaluation of carcass and meat traits of Muscovy duck fed with black soldier fly partially defatted meal

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the carcass characteristics and breast meat quality in Muscovy duck (Cairina moschata domestica) fed different inclusion levels of a partially defatted black soldier fly larva (BSF) meal. A total of 256 Muscovy ducklings (average live weight, LW: 71.32\ub12.70 g) were reared from day 3 to day 48 and randomly allotted in 32 pens (8 replicates/treatment). Four different diets were formulated with increasing substitution level of corn gluten meal with BSF larva meal (0, 3, 6 and 9%; BSF0, BSF3, BSF6 and BSF9, respectively) and divided in 3 feeding phases: starter (1-14 days), grower (14-35 days) and finisher (35-48 days). At day 48, 2 animals/replicate were slaughtered and dissected to determine their carcass yields. The weights of spleen, bursa of Fabricius, liver, heart and abdominal fat were recorded. Breast and thigh muscles were then excised from 16 ducks/treatment and weighted. Ultimate pH (pHu) and L*, a*, b* colour values were then measured on breast muscle. The collected data were tested by means of oneway ANOVA evaluating the effect of dietary BSF inclusion level by polynomial contrasts. Significance was declared at P<0.05. The inclusion of BSF did not affect final LW (2,515.68\ub192.42 g on average). Hot and cold carcass weights showed a quadratic response (P<0.05) to increasing BSF larva meal, with a minimum corresponding to BSF6; however, refrigeration losses were not affected by treatments. Weight of spleen, bursa of Fabricius, liver and heart did not differ among treatments. The weight of abdominal fat showed a quadratic response to increasing BSF meal with a minimum corresponding to BSF6 group (P<0.05). Breast and thigh yields, pHu and L*, a*, b* colour values did not differ among groups. With the exception of BSF6, the inclusion of BSF meal did not affect meat traits and carcass characteristics, confirming the potential use of BSF meal in Muscovy duck diets

    Unintentional drowning : Role of medicinal drugs and alcohol

    Background: Alcohol is a well-known risk factor in unintentional drownings. Whereas psychotropic drugs, like alcohol, may cause psychomotor impairment and affect cognition, no detailed studies have focused on their association with drowning. Finland provides extensive post-mortem toxicological data for studies on drowning because of its high medico-legal autopsy rates. Methods: Drowning cases, 2000 through 2009, for which post-mortem toxicological analysis was performed, came from the database of the Toxicological Laboratory, Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Helsinki, using the ICD-10 nature-of-injury code T75.1. The data were narrowed to unintentional drowning, using the ICD-10 external-injury codes V90, V92, and W65-74. Each drowning case had its blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and concentrations of other drugs recorded. Evaluation of the contribution of psychotropic drugs to drowning was based on their blood concentration by means of a 6-grade scale. Results: Among victims >= 15 years old, unintentional drownings numbered 1697, of which, 303 (17.9%) were boating-related and 1394 (82.1%) non-boating-related. Among these, 65.0% of boating-related and 61.8% of non-boating-related victims were alcohol-positive (=BAC >= 50 mg/dL). The male-to-female ratio in alcohol-positive drownings was 7.3. At least one psychotropic drug appeared in 453 (26.7%) drowning cases, with some victims' bodies showing up to 7 different drugs. Overall 70 different psychotropic drugs were detectable, with 134 (7.9%) cases both alcohol-negative and psychotropic-drug-positive, of these, 59 (3.5%) were graded 4 to 6, indicating a possible to very probable contribution to drowning. Our findings suggest that psychotropic drugs may play a significant role in drowning, in up to 14.5% of cases, independently or in association with alcohol. Conclusions: Psychotropic drugs alone or in association with alcohol may be an overlooked risk factor in drowning, due to their effects on psychomotor function and cognition. Future studies should also address other mechanisms-for instance drug-induced long-QT syndrome-by which drugs may contribute to drowning.Peer reviewe

    Chitosan induces delayed grapevine defense mechanisms and protects grapevine against Botrytis cinerea

    In the present study, a commercial chitosan soluble in acid solution and obtained from shrimp shell waste, with a molecular weight of 173 kDa and a degree of acetylation of 17%, named as chitosan (173/17), was investigated. Chitosan is a well-known biopolymer whose antimicrobial properties are highly influenced by the molecular weight, degree of acetylation as well as the preparation and derivatization methods used. Chitosan (173/17) was applied on grapevine leaves before Botrytis cinerea inoculation to verify its effectiveness as a preventive treatment against the fungal infection. The expression of a set of defense marker genes, as well as accumulation of stilbene phytoalexins, was investigated. Thanks to its fungistatic and filmogenic properties, chitosan (173/17) protected grapevine leaves against B. cinerea. Moreover, it induced grapevine defense response: three days after the treatment an induction of the jasmonic acid and ethylene-mediated response, a repression of the salicylic acid-mediated signaling, and a transient accumulation of trans-resveratrol were registered. Our data indicate that chitosan (173/17), when used in preventive application, is able to protect grapevine against B. cinerea infection.
