    DOES INDUSTRY STRUCTURE AFFECT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FIRM CHARACTERISTICS AND PERFORMANCE OF LAW FIRMS IN KENYA?

    Explaining and often predicting organizational performance is a primary researchobjective in the field of strategic management that need to be addressed becauseperformance improvement is at the heart of strategic management. The studyargues thatthe role of industry structure in the relationship between firmcharacteristics and performance has not received conclusive empirical backing.The study was contextualized in law firms in Kenya in which these variables havenot been empirically tested. The main objective of this study was to determine theinfluence of industry structure on the relationship between firm characteristicsand performance of law firms in Kenya. To achieve this objective, thecorresponding hypothesis was formulated and tested at 95 percent confidencelevel.The study was guided by resource based theory, the institutional theory andindustrial organizational theory. Through a cross-sectional descriptive survey,data was obtained using a semi-structured questionnaire. The questionnaire wasadministered to a sample of 379 law firms spread across the country out of which356 were filled and returned, representing a response rate of 93.93 percent. Thehypothesis was tested using the hierarchical analysis used to test moderatingeffects. The findings show that industry structure significantlymoderatetherelationship between firm characteristics and performance. Results of industrystructure independently on performancewere also statistically significant. Thestudy contributes to managerial practice and offerdirection for policy makers andthe owners of the law firms in Kenya since managers will use the findings of thisstudy to monitor the crucial performance drivers in their law firms with regard toindustry structure and strategy.The study therefore recommends that futurestudies should consider utilizing multiple methodologies such as applying mixedmethods of research to help identify the key factors of firm strategy andoperationalize their study in a different approach.     Perspectives on using remotely-sensed imagery in predictive veterinary epidemiology and global early warning systems

    Recent disease epidemics and their spread around the world have illustrated the weaknesses of disease surveillance and early warning systems (EWS), both at national and international levels. These diseases continuously threaten the livestock sector on a worldwide basis, some with major public health impact. EWS and accurate forecasting of new outbreaks of epidemic livestock diseases that may also affect wildlife, and the capacity for spread of such diseases to new areas is an essential pre-requisite to their effective containment and control. Because both the geographical and seasonal distribution of many infectious diseases are linked to climate, the possibility of using climaterelated environmental factors as predictive indicators, in association with regular disease surveillance activities, has proven to be relevant when establishing EWS for climate-related diseases. This article reviews the growing importance of using geographical information systems in predictive veterinary epidemiology and its integration into EWS, with a special focus on Rift Valley fever. It shows that, once fully validated in a country or region, this technology appears highly valuable and could play an increasing role in forecasting major epidemics, providing lead time to national veterinary services to take action to mitigate the impact of the disease in a cost-effective manner

    Interacting dark matter contribution to the Galactic 511 keV gamma ray emission: constraining the morphology with INTEGRAL/SPI observations

    We compare the full-sky morphology of the 511 keV gamma ray excess measured by the INTEGRAL/SPI experiment to predictions of models based on dark matter (DM) scatterings that produce low-energy positrons: either MeV-scale DM that annihilates directly into e+e- pairs, or heavy DM that inelastically scatters into an excited state (XDM) followed by decay into e+e- and the ground state.By direct comparison to the data, we find that such explanations are consistent with dark matter halo profiles predicted by numerical many-body simulations for a Milky Way-like galaxy. Our results favor an Einasto profile over the cuspier NFW distribution and exclude decaying dark matter scenarios whose predicted spatial distribution is too broad. We obtain a good fit to the shape of the signal using six fewer degrees of freedom than previous empirical fits to the 511 keV data. We find that the ratio of flux at Earth from the galactic bulge to that of the disk is between 1.9 and 2.4, taking into account that 73% of the disk contribution may be attributed to the beta decay of radioactive 26Al.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures.     Implications of solar wind measurements for solar models and composition

    We critically examine recent claims of a high solar metallicity by von Steiger & Zurbuchen (2016, vSZ16) based on in situ measurements of the solar wind, rather than the standard spectroscopically inferred abundances (Asplund et al. 2009, hereafter AGSS09). We test the claim by Vagnozzi et al. (2016) that a composition based on the solar wind enables one to construct a standard solar model in agreement with helioseismological observations and thus solve the decades-old solar modelling problem. We show that, although some helioseismological observables are improved compared to models computed with spectroscopic abundances, most are in fact worse. The high abundance of refractory elements leads to an overproduction of neutrinos, with a predicted 8B flux that is nearly twice its observed value, and 7Be and CNO fluxes that are experimentally ruled out at high confidence. A combined likelihood analysis shows that models using the vSZ16 abundances are worse than AGSS09 despite a higher metallicity. We also present astrophysical and spectroscopic arguments showing the vSZ16 composition to be an implausible representation of the solar interior, identifying the first ionization potential effect in the outer solar atmosphere and wind as the likely culprit

    A simple vector system to improve performance and utilisation of recombinant antibodies

    BACKGROUND: Isolation of recombinant antibody fragments from antibody libraries is well established using technologies such as phage display. Phage display vectors are ideal for efficient display of antibody fragments on the surface of bacteriophage particles. However, they are often inefficient for expression of soluble antibody fragments, and sub-cloning of selected antibody populations into dedicated soluble antibody fragment expression vectors can enhance expression. RESULTS: We have developed a simple vector system for expression, dimerisation and detection of recombinant antibody fragments in the form of single chain Fvs (scFvs). Expression is driven by the T7 RNA polymerase promoter in conjunction with the inducible lysogen strain BL21 (DE3). The system is compatible with a simple auto-induction culture system for scFv production. As an alternative to periplasmic expression, expression directly in the cytoplasm of a mutant strain with a more oxidising cytoplasmic environment (Origami 2â„¢ (DE3)) was investigated and found to be inferior to periplasmic expression in BL21 (DE3) cells. The effect on yield and binding activity of fusing scFvs to the N terminus of maltose binding protein (a solubility enhancing partner), bacterial alkaline phosphatase (a naturally dimeric enzymatic reporter molecule), or the addition of a free C-terminal cysteine was determined. Fusion of scFvs to the N-terminus of maltose binding protein increased scFv yield but binding activity of the scFv was compromised. In contrast, fusion to the N-terminus of bacterial alkaline phosphatase led to an improved performance. Alkaline phosphatase provides a convenient tag allowing direct enzymatic detection of scFv fusions within crude extracts without the need for secondary reagents. Alkaline phosphatase also drives dimerisation of the scFv leading to an improvement in performance compared to monovalent constructs. This is illustrated by ELISA, western blot and immunohistochemistry. CONCLUSION: Nine scFv expression vectors have been generated and tested. Three vectors showed utility for expression of functional scFv fragments. One vector, pSANG14-3F, produces scFv-alkaline phosphatase fusion molecules which offers a simple, convenient and sensitive way of determining the reactivity of recombinant antibody fragments in a variety of common assay systems

    Fibrosis of the left atria during progression of heart failure is associated with increased matrix metalloproteinases in the rat

    AbstractObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to determine the pathogenic factors and molecular mechanisms involved in fibrosis of the atria.BackgroundFibrosis is an important component of the pathophysiology of atrial fibrillation, especially when the arrhythmia is associated with heart failure (HF) or atrial dilation.MethodsWe used a rat model of myocardial infarction (MI) complicated by various degrees of left ventricular dysfunction and atrial dilation to study fibrosis and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity in the left atrial (LA) myocardium by means of histologic, Western blot, zymographic, and immunohistologic techniques.ResultsThree months after surgical ligature of the left coronary artery, 27 rats had a large MI, 12 were in mild HF, and 15 in severe HF. Both groups had LA enlargement at the echocardiography. Masson’s trichrome and picrosirius staining of tissue sections revealed marked fibrosis at the periphery of trabeculae and also surrounding myolytic myocytes, in both mild and severe HF. In mild HF, the activity and expression of the matrilysin MMP-7 were increased (122%), whereas in severe HF, both MMP-7 (211%) and the gelatinase MMP-2 (187%) were up-regulated. There were no changes in the expression or activity of MMP inhibitors, TIMP-1, -2, and -4. Immunostaining of cryosections showed that MMP-2 was present in the interstitial spaces, whereas MMP-7 accumulated in myolytic myocytes.ConclusionsHemodynamic overload of the atria is an important pathogenic factor of fibrosis; MMP-7 appears to be involved in the early stage of this tissue remodeling process
