The City by the Pool
This volume offers a new and up-to-date synthesis of Lincoln's long history as a major city and regional capital, from prehistory to 1945. The 'City by the Pool' was a major religious centre long before the Roman invasion and from bronze-age shamans to early Baptists people have always been attracted here for spiritual as well as mundane purposes. The authors argue for the presence of a major ritual causeway of the late Bronze and Iron Age and outline the extent to which ritual monuments also contributed to the character of Roman Lincoln. This book is based on more than a hundred publicly-funded excavations and building surveys undertaken between 1945 and 2000. It surveys all aspects of city life, from housing and fortifications to the water supply and rubbish disposal. It includes a CD Rom with a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a relational data-base known as LARA (the Lincoln Archaeological Research Assessment)

A Corpus of Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Pottery from Lincoln
This volume reports on the Anglo-Saxon and Medieval pottery found during various archaeological excavations in the city from 1970 until 1987. The authors present a city-wide pottery classification system and analyse the sequence of pottery types through time and at numerous sites. They make extensive use of petrological analysis, including the study of over 600 thin-sections. These have been used to characterise the local clay and temper sources exploited by Lincoln potters and to identify wares made in the vicinity of the city, those made elsewhere in the county of Lincolnshire, and to identify regional and foreign imports. The volume is arranged by pottery types, illustrated by typical and unusual examples and accompanied by descriptions of their visual appearance, petrological characteristics, source, forms, decoration and dating evidence
The effects of tensile preloads on the impact response of carbon/epoxy laminates
The effects of tensile preloads on the tension-after-impact (TAI) strength of composite laminates of IM7/8551-7 were examined. A failure threshold curve was first determined so the most informative values for preload/impact energy combinations could be determined. The impact tests were instrumented so maximum load of impact, as well as several other parameters could be measured. The elastic response data indicate that as the tensile preload is increased, the maximum load of impact also increases. The damage data show that at low impact energies, the damage/failure is an 'all-or-nothing' event but at higher impact energies, a region of preload values exists where the coupons could sustain damage, yet not fail catastrophically

Quenching of the radio jet during the X-ray high state of GX 339-4
We have observed the black hole candidate X-ray binary GX 339-4 at radio
wavelengths before, during and after the 1998 high/soft X-ray state transition.
We find that the radio emission from the system is strongly correlated with the
hard X-ray emission and is reduced by a factor > 25 during the high/soft state
compared to the more usual low/hard state. At the points of state transition we
note brief periods of unusually optically-thin radio emission which may
correspond to discrete ejection events. We propose that in the low/hard state
black hole X-ray binaries produce a quasi-continuous outflow, in the high/soft
state this outflow is suppressed, and that state transitions often result in
one or more discrete ejection events. Future models for low/hard states, such
as ADAF/ADIOS solutions, need to take into account strong outflow of
relativistic electrons from the system. We propose that the inferred
Comptonising corona and the base of the jet-like outflow are the same thing,
based upon the strong correlation between radio and hard X-ray emission in GX
339-4 and other X-ray binaries, and the similarity in inferred location and

COSEE OCEAN Inquiry Group Report: Opportunities for Creating Lifelong Ocean Science Literacy
This Inquiry Group Report for the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence Ocean Communities in Education And Social Networks (COSEE OCEAN) provides a fresh look at how broader ocean science literacy can be developed, especially through less-recognized channels such as opportunistic learning, the private and “third” sectors, and the enormously varied activities under the heading of informal science education. The 10 authors of this report (see Contributors section) have been working together for two years to find and review a range of issues and resources for current and potential ocean science literacy providers, both professional and volunteer.
Several chapters provide a survey of useful materials and websites, while others offer ideas that will be new for many readers, including opportunities and unfamiliar venues for carrying out this enterprise. Included are chapters depicting a perhaps surprising plethora of channels for increasing ocean science literacy, both in school and especially, out of school. Other chapters discuss the societal contexts for using these channels, which include ideas for potential funding sources and cultural partners. Not every reader will find every chapter useful so each chapter is written to stand alone. This requires redundancy of some material from chapter to chapter. The primary authors for each chapter have their own writing styles and voice. Finally, given the varied topics of each chapter, some are dense with annotated lists of existing materials, while others were written to analyze fresh opportunities for the creation of new materials and projects.
This report was written with several audiences in mind: the professional educators in the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) network; formal and informal educators who are looking for ways to incorporate ocean sciences in the work they do; and policymakers in both science and education who are concerned with using all available channels to improve the public understanding of such major concerns as global climate change, energy sources and uses, the health of local and global ecosystems, and natural resources such as seafood
Dynamic change in insulin resistance induced by free fatty acids is unchanged though insulin sensitivity improves following endurance exercise in PCOS
Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is the hallmark of PCOS and it is known that exercise may decrease it. What is unknown is whether exercise may mechanistically alter the underlying IR, attenuating the dynamic lipid induced IR in insulin resistant subjects.Methods: Twelve women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and ten age and body mass index matched controls completed an eight week supervised exercise program at 60% maximal oxygen consumption. Before and after the exercise program, all participants underwent hyperinsulinaemic euglycaemic clamps with either saline or intralipid infusions. Skewed data were log transformed and expressed as mean ±SEM. Results: Before exercise, women with PCOS had a higher HOMA-IR and lower VO2 max than controls. Compared to saline, lipid infusion lowered the rate of insulin stimulated glucose disposal (M value; mg/kg/min) by 67±5% (from 0.5±0.03 to -0.25±0.2, p=0.01) in PCOS, and by 49±7% (from 0.65±0.06 to 0.3±0.1, p=0.01) in controls. The M value was significantly less in PCOS compared to controls for both saline (p less than 0.01) and lipid (p less than 0.05). Endurance exercise in PCOS improved VO2 max and HOMA-IR, but not weight, to those of pre-exercise control subjects. The glucose disposal rate during the lipid infusion was reduced following exercise in PCOS, indicating decreased IR (67 ± 5 vs. 50 ± 7%, p = 0.02), but IR was not altered in controls (49 ± 7 vs. 45 ± 6%, p = 0.58). The incrementally increased IR induced by the lipid infusion did not differ between controls and PCOS.Conclusion: Insulin sensitivity improved with exercise in the PCOS group alone showing that IR can be modified, though likely transiently. However, the maximal IR response to the lipid infusion did not differ within and between control and PCOS subjects, indicating that the fundamental mechanism underlying insulin resistance was unchanged with exercise.Precis: Maximal insulin resistance induced by lipid infusion determined at baseline and 8 weeks after exercise in control and PCOS women did not differ, though insulin sensitivity increased in PCOS after exercise
First Approaches to Standard protocols and Reference Materials for the Assessment of Potential Hazards Associated with Nanomaterialss
All new technologies have an inherent risk, which is typically assessed alongside the development of applications of the technology. This is also the case for nanotechnology: a key concern in the case of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is that due to their very small size, NMs can reach areas such as the cell that are inaccessible to other materials, such as implants and drugs. As a result of their large surface area, NMs may be more reactive than other larger materials. The large physical and chemical variability of NMs, and the fact that small changes can have large consequences, mean that there is insufficient data on which to make safety or risk assessments at present. Thus, a widely supported scientific basis and sufficient high quality data upon which to base regulatory decisions are required urgently. NanoImpactNet (NIN) can support the development and dissemination of such data. This report presents the outcome of the discussions of 60 experts in the field of safety assessment of manufactured NMs from academia, industry, government and non-profit organizations on some of the critical issues pertaining to the development of standard protocols and reference materials for assessment of the potential hazards associated with ENMs. It should be noted here that there was a separate NIN workshop on determining the best metrics for assessing NP safety, and that this workshop was directed specifically to how best to standardise testing protocols and develop reference materials for human health assessment
