    Synthesis and photoluminescence studies on catalytically grown Zn1 – xMnxS nanowires

    Zn1 – xMnxS alloy nanowires with composition (x = 0.0, 0.1 and 0.3) have been successfully synthesized by a simple thermal evaporation on the silicon substrate coated with a gold film of 2 nm thickness. X-ray powder diffraction measurements reveal that as synthesized products were hexagonal wurtzite structure. The as grown nanowires have been investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy Dispersive Analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and photoluminescence studies. The results reveal that the as grown nanowires consist of Zn, Mn, and S material and diameter ranging from 70 - 150 nm with lengths up to several tens of micrometers. Photoluminescence studies on Zn1 – xMnxS exhibited peaks at 600 and 613 nm for x = 0.1 and 0.3 respectively.     Complementary and alternative medicine: practice and perspective of allopathic doctors at a tertiary care hospital

    Background: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been defined as a group of diverse healthcare systems, not considered to be a part of conventional (allopathic) medicine. Approximately 80% of general population use traditional medicines (WHO). Thus, patients using CAM and its associated adverse effects may be encountered in practice of modern medicine. Hence it is necessary to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of CAM among health care professionals (HCPs).Methods: After obtaining IEC approval, the cross-sectional study was conducted in doctors at Bangalore Medical College and its attached hospitals. 200 doctors who gave informed consent were included in the study.Results: 61.5% of the HCPs were aware that CAM includes AYUSH. 53% of the HCPs used CAM for self, especially for respiratory disorders (28.3%) and chronic painful conditions (21.6%). The common adverse effects attributed to use of CAM among patients which required consultation of the HCPs were hepatic (42.5%) and renal impairment (32.5%), allergy (10%), relapse (10%), and metal intoxication (5%). 71% didn’t prefer suggesting CAM for patients. 70% opined that CAM therapies be subjected to clinical trials.Conclusions: HCPs had used CAM therapy for self at least once especially for respiratory disorders and chronic painful conditions. However majority of the HCPs didn’t prefer suggesting CAM to patients and as many as 70% of the HCPs  insisted that CAM therapies be subjected to scientific evaluation including clinical trials in view of patient safety before integrating them with conventional medicine

    Attitudes of undergraduates towards mental illness: A comparison between nursing and business management students in India

    Background. Mental illness is an important public health issue worldwide; stigmatisation and negative attitudes towards people with mental illness are widespread among the general public. However, little is known about the attitudes of undergraduates to mental illness.  Purpose. To compare the attitudes towards mental illness among undergraduates enrolled in nursing courses v. those enrolled in Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) courses.  Methods. A cross-sectional descriptive design was adopted for the present study. A total of 268 undergraduates were selected to complete the Attitude Scale for Mental Illness (ASMI) and the Opinions about Mental Illness in the Chinese Community (OMICC) questionnaires.  Results. We found significant differences between the number of nursing and BBM students who agreed with statements posed by the questionnaires, e.g., that they would move out of their community if a mental health facility was established there (χ2=16.503, p<0.002), that they were not afraid of treated mentally ill people (χ2=15.279, p<0.004), and that people with mental illness tend to be violent (χ2=14.215, p<0.007) and dangerous (χ2=17.808, p<0.001). Nursing students disagreed that people with mental illness are easily identified (χ2=30.094, p<0.000), have a lower IQ (χ2=70.689, p<0.000) and should not have children (χ2=24.531, p<0.000). Nursing students were more benevolent than BBM students, as they agreed that people with mental illness can hold a job (χ2=49.992, p<0.000) and can return to their former position (χ2=11.596, p<0.021), that everyone faces the possibility of becoming mentally ill (χ2=38.726, p<0.000), and that one should not laugh at the mentally ill (χ2=17.407, p<0.002). Nursing students held less pessimistic attitudes, as they felt that the mentally ill should receive the same pay for the same job (χ2=10.669, p<0.031) and that the public are prejudiced towards people with mental illness (χ2=17.604, p<0.001). Conclusion. College students’ attitudes towards people with mental illness vary based on the course that they are enrolled in. Attitudes may be positively improved by revising curriculum design to incorporate educational sessions about mental illness. These are essential steps to combat discrimination, and potentially enhance the promotion of human rights for the mentally ill

    Parents’ knowledge, attitude, and practice on childhood immunization

    Background: The objective of present study was to determine the knowledge, attitude, and practices of parents regarding childhood immunization.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in immunization clinic at Vanivilas hospital, a government tertiary care center (G) attached to Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute and a private pediatric clinic (P) in Bengaluru. Data were collected from 200 parents/guardians (100 from each set up) using structured questionnaire administered by the investigators.Results: Out of 200 parents surveyed, 172 (86%) children were found to be fully immunized. The sickness of child was the most common cause (67%) for missing vaccination. A statistically significant proportion of boys (95%) were completely immunized as compared to girls (84%, p<0.01). Most of them knew that vaccination prevented some communicable diseases but were unaware as to which diseases they prevented and that the immunity is not life-long. Knowledge (p<0.004) and practice (p<0.001) of parents opting for optional vaccines were significantly higher in private setting compared to the government setting. All mothers opined that compliance to immunization schedule is important, had recommended vaccination to others and maintained a vaccination card. Gender of the child, birth order, mothers’ educational status, monthly income of parents and religion significantly affected the vaccination status while mother’s employment did not influence it.Conclusion: Although childhood immunization practices and attitudes are satisfactory, majority do not have specific knowledge on vaccines and the duration of protection they offer. Socio-demographic factors had a significant influence on the immunization status. Hence, efforts should be focused on improving them also besides educating them about vaccines to improve their knowledge

    Fabrication Of ZnxCd1 – xSe Nanowires By CVD Process And Photoluminescence Studies

    ZnxCd1 – xSe alloy nanowires with composition x = 0.2, 0.5 have been successfully synthesized by a simple thermal evaporation on the silicon substrate coated with a gold film of 20 Å thickness. The as-synthesized alloy nanowires, 70 - 150 nm in diameter and several tens of micrometer in length. The nanowires are single crystalline revealed from Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and XRD measurement. The structure of ZnxCd1 – xSe nanowires are hexagonal wurtzite with [01-10] growth direction. Energy gap of the ZnxCd1 – xSe nanowires are determined from micro photoluminescence measurements.     Magnetic and dielectric properties of BiFeO3 nanoparticles

    Single crystalline nano-sized multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) powders were synthesized through simple chemical co-precipitation method using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as capping agent. We obtained pure phase BiFeO3 powder by controlling pHand calcination temperature. From X-ray diffraction studies the nanoparticles were unambiguously identified to have a rhombohedrally distorted perovskite structure belonging to the space group of R3c. No secondary phases were detected. It indicates single phase structure. EDX spectra indicated the appearance of three elements Bi, Fe, O in 1:1:3. From the UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum, the absorption cut-off wavelength of the BFO sample is around 558nm corresponding to the energy band gap of 2.2 eV. The size (60-70 nm) and morphology of the nanoparticles have been analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM).   Linear M−H behaviour and slight hysteresis at lower magnetic field is observed for BiFeO3 nanoparticles from Vibrating sample magnetometer studies. It indicates weak ferromagnetic behaviour at room temperature. From dielectric studies, the conductivity value is calculated from the relation s = L/RbA Sm-1 and it is around 7.2 x 10-9 S/m

    Effect of Mg Doping on the Structural and Optical Properties of CdS Nanoparticles Synthesized by co-Precipitation Method

    Cd1 – xMgxS (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20) nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation method for the first time. Compositional, morphological, structural and optical studies of the as prepared samples were carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and Photoluminescence (PL) techniques. XRD studies revealed the structural phase transition from cubic to hexagonal and increase in the average grain size of the nanoparticles (lie in the range 1.4 nm to 2.8 nm) with increasing Mg content. EDAX spectra rules out the existence of impurities in the samples. Bandgap widening was observed in all the samples compared to bulk CdS (2.42 eV). Decrease in bandgap (3.02 eV to 2.54 eV), luminescence quenching and red shift of luminescence peak position were observed with increasing Mg in Cd1 – xMgxS.     Nasopalatine duct cyst mimicking as residual cyst- An enigma in clinical diagnosis- A case report

    Incisive canal cyst or nasopalatine duct cysts (NPDCs) are the most common non-odontogenic cysts of the maxilla. These are the common intraosseous developmental cyst occurring in the midline of the maxillary anterior region. They are usually asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during the routine radiographic examination. They can be described as a well-circumscribed radiolucency between the root apices of the maxillary central incisors. Since these lesions show diagnostic dilemma in clinical and radiological study, a definitive diagnosis is required to be confirmed by histopathology. Surgical approach with enucleation of the cyst is the definitive treatment of NPDC. Hereby, we report an unusual presentation of NPDCs mimicking as residual cyst which was associated with missing upper anterior teeth

    Drug-induced photosensitivity refers to the development of cutaneous disease as a result of combined effects of a chemical and light. Photosensitivity reactions may result from systemic medications and topically applied compounds. Pirfenidone is known to cause photosensitivity reactions, rash, pruritus and dry skin at high doses. However, similar adverse reactions with low doses of Pirfenidone have not been reported.
