Subcontinental Nuclear Instability: The Spiralling Nightmare

    Get PDF
The scheme that carved world order during the Cold War was a pitched battle for \u27containment\u27 against burgeoning communism. In turn, rationality gave way to the threat of catastrophic nuclear force as the basis of stability. If at all there is a historical lesson to be learned from that experience then it is that stability begins with serious and sustained dialogue between leadership; the alternative being what Kennedy termed the peace of the grave. An appraisal of the contemporary global state of nuclear affairs will suggest that the three pillars of nuclear stability, namely, non-proliferation, control of fissile material production, and transparency of nuclear arsenals are wobbly for lack of foundational support. In the truancy of global foundational support the answer may well lie in reconstituting a framework for détente. In the Subcontinental context there looms a very real nuclear nightmare. It takes the form of a hair-trigger, opaque nuclear arsenal that has embraced tactical use under decentralized military control, is steered by an ambiguous doctrine, and guided by a military strategy that carouses with non-state actors. The effect of an weakened civilian leadership in Pakistan that is incapable of action to remove the military finger from the nuclear trigger can do little to dispel the nightmare. A singular feature of the deterrent relationship in the region is its tri-polar character. As is well known today, it is the collusive nature of the Sino-Pak nuclear relationship which created and sustains the Pakistan nuclear weapons program. This in stark contrast to the Indian nuclear doctrine that went public in 2003. The unleashing of Islamic radicals in the wake of US withdrawal from the Af-Pak region and their mounting internalization in the Pakistan military and political establishments brings into question the state and motivation of the nuclear command and control structures there. Stability in this context would suggest the importance of not only reinforcing assured retaliation to nuclear violence, but, at the same time, for Indian leadership to bring about a consensus among both China and the USA to persuade Pakistan to harmonize with foundational rules of nuclear conduct and re-orient the Sino-Pak nuclear collusion

Extension of Multivariate Analyses to the Field of Microbial Ecology

Ground-breaking advancements in molecular and analytical techniques in the past decade have enabled researchers to accumulate data at an extraordinary rate. Especially in the field of microbial ecology, the introduction of technologies such as high-throughput sequencing, quantitative microarrays, nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry has led to the interrogation of diverse and previously unexplored microbial communities at unparalleled depth. Analysis and interpretation of patterns within datasets acquired with such high-throughput methods require powerful statistical approaches. A class of such techniques called multivariate statistical analyses is an excellent choice for analysis of complex microbiota-related datasets. This field of statistics is constantly evolving as new techniques and procedures are being developed and applied to explore and interpret the underlying patterns both statistically and visually. As a result, the decision-making process involved in the choice of the technique that best suits the scientific question and the dataset is no longer trivial. Additionally, the current trends in the use of multivariate statistics in microbial ecology indicate a strong preference toward exploratory analyses, resulting in limitations to possible biological interpretations. In order to facilitate a more extensive integration of multivariate statistics in microbial ecology, I apply a diverse set of analytical methods to human-associated microbial and metabolite datasets that allows us to draw biologically relevant inferences. Specifically, I use indirect gradient analyses to show that the largest gradients of variability correspond to the separation of samples based on sample groups. I use direct gradient analyses to explain a significant portion of the overall variability present within the response variables using independently measured environmental variables. I use classifier techniques to build highly accurate discriminant models based on the differences in the response variables across sample groups and identify the variables that contribute the most to sample group separation. Using correlation-based bipartite analyses, I identify statistically significant associations between two different sets of response variable that were measured for the same set of samples. Finally, I integrate the analytical insights from the above approaches into a generalized protocol for the analysis of multivariate datasets in the field of microbial ecology

    Olfactory Neuroblastoma: Diagnostic Difficulty

    Get PDF
Olfactory neuroblastoma is an uncommon malignant tumor of sinonasal tract arising from the olfactory neuro epithelium. The olfactory neuroblastomas presenting with divergent histomorphologies like, epithelial appearance of cells, lacking a neuro fibrillary background and absence of rosettes are difficult to diagnose. Such cases require immunohistochemistry to establish the diagnosis. We describe the clinical features, pathological and immunohistochemical findings of grade IV Olfactory neuroblastoma in a 57 year old ma

An Unusual Melanocytic Nevus of Conjunctiva : Balloon Cell Nevus

    Get PDF
Melanocytic nevi are one of the most common benign tumors of the conjunctiva. The balloon cell nevus is a rare and unusual variant of nevus of melanocytic origin, in which more than 50% of the tumor is composed of large polygonal cells with small nucleus and a clear to vacuolated cytoplasm. We describe a case of balloon cell nevus in a 6-year-old child who presented with pigmented lesion of the right eye since birth. The melanocytic nature of these cells was confirmed by immunohistochemical study. Excision of the tumor results in cure. This report describes a rare balloon cell nevus of conjunctiva which to the best of our knowledge is not documented in Indian literature

Emperipolesis in a Case of Adult T Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma (Mediastinal type)-Detected at FNAC and Imprint Cytology

    Get PDF
Emperipolesis is a condition in which viable hematopoetic cells are seen intact in the cytoplasm of host cell without damage. This phenomenon is seen in many physiologic and pathologic conditions, its presence in Rosai Dorfman disease (RDD) is characteristic of the disease. However emperipolesis is an uncommon finding in malignant lymphoma both Hodgkins and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, wherein it has been described in bone marrow aspirate and tissue culture. In contrast there are only two case reports of emperipolesis phenomenon described in non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in tissue sections. We report a case of an adult T cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (mediastinal type) with features of emperipolesis demonstrated at fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and imprint cytology of cervical lymph nodes. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of emperipolesis in a case of adult T cell lymphoblastic lymphoma (mediastinal type)-detected at FNAC and imprint cytology

Theory of magnetism and metal-insulator transition in layered perovskite iridates

We investigate the metal-insulator transition in the layered Ruddelsden Popper series of strontium iridates Srn+1IrnO3n+1. Tight-binding models of t2g orbitals for n = 1, 2, and infinity are constructed, and changes in band dispersion due to dimensionality and spin-orbit coupling are presented. Identifying the states near the Fermi level to be predominantly Jeff = 1/2, we use an effective Hubbard model to study the effect of correlations. Transitions from a metallic state to various magnetically ordered states at different critical interactions are obtained. A canted antiferromagnetic insulator is found for Sr2IrO4, a c-axis collinear antiferromagnetic insulator for Sr3Ir2O7, and non-coplanar canted antiferromagnetic insulator via magnetic metal for SrIrO3. We derive the strong-coupling spin-model and compare the magnetic ordering patterns obtained in the weak and strong coupling limits. We find that they are identical, indicating that magnetic ordering is not sufficient to justify Mott physics in this series of iridates.Comment: 11 pages, 18 figure

Combined Effect of Vidanga & Kampillaka on Krimi Roga w.s.r. to Round Worms

Krimi have been considered a major public health problem through out the world (WHO, 1967 Wandan, 1983 McLaren, 1984). In our country this problem is equally significant. It effects the children more frequently than adult (CCRAS 1987). Krimi hamper growth and development of a person, create malnutritional condition and decrease immunity thus the effective solution of this problem is necessary. Krimi may be a cause of death of a diseased person. Of all the herbs used in treating worm infestation, Vidanga Beeja Churna (Embelia ribes) and Kampillaka Phalraja Churna (Mallotus phillipensis) were used for the present comparative study. In most of patients, who are suffering from worm infestation have an Vivarnata on the face. “Vivarnata” had been described by Acharya Charaka under the Lakshana of Purishaja Krimi and it has been also described in Rasavaha Srotodusti Lakshana. Krimis robe the digestive nutritive assets through the intestinal wall, which we are making with high effort. So the deficiency of Rasa Dhatu created. According to Dhatu Poshana Nyaya if the Rasa Dhatu is not sufficient then other Dhatu can’t form properly and ultimate weak resistance and poor immunity develops
