Simple Combined Model for Nonlinear Excitations in DNA

We propose a new simple model for DNA denaturation bases on the pendulum model of Englander\cite{A1} and the microscopic model of Peyrard {\it et al.},\cite{A3} so called "combined model". The main parameters of our model are: the coupling constant kk along each strand, the mean stretching y∗y^\ast of the hydrogen bonds, the ratio of the damping constant and driven force γ/F\gamma/F. We show that both the length LL of unpaired bases and the velocity vv of kinks depend on not only the coupling constant kk but also the temperature TT. Our results are in good agreement with previous works.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Chiral spinors and gauge fields in noncommutative curved space-time

The fundamental concepts of Riemannian geometry, such as differential forms, vielbein, metric, connection, torsion and curvature, are generalized in the context of non-commutative geometry. This allows us to construct the Einstein-Hilbert-Cartan terms, in addition to the bosonic and fermionic ones in the Lagrangian of an action functional on non-commutative spaces. As an example, and also as a prelude to the Standard Model that includes gravitational interactions, we present a model of chiral spinor fields on a curved two-sheeted space-time with two distinct abelian gauge fields. In this model, the full spectrum of the generalized metric consists of pairs of tensor, vector and scalar fields. They are coupled to the chiral fermions and the gauge fields leading to possible parity violation effects triggered by gravity.Comment: 50 pages LaTeX, minor corrections and references adde

Data-driven structural health monitoring using feature fusion and hybrid deep learning

Smart structural health monitoring (SHM) for large-scale infrastructures is an intriguing subject for engineering communities thanks to its significant advantages such as timely damage detection, optimal maintenance strategy, and reduced resource requirement. Yet, it is a challenging topic as it requires handling a large amount of collected sensors data continuously, which is inevitably contaminated by random noises. Therefore, this study developed a practical end-to-end framework that makes use of physical features embedded in raw data and an elaborated hybrid deep learning model, namely 1DCNN-LSTM, featuring two algorithms - Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM). In order to extract relevant features from sensory data, the method combines various signal processing techniques such as the autoregressive model, discrete wavelet transform, and empirical mode decomposition. The hybrid deep learning 1DCNN-LSTM is designed based on the CNN’s capacity of capturing local information and the LSTM network’s prominent ability to learn long-term dependencies. Through three case studies involving both experimental and synthetic datasets, it is demonstrated that the proposed approach achieves highly accurate damage detection, as accurate as the powerful two-dimensional CNN, but with a lower time and memory complexity, making it suitable for real-time SHM

Photo-to-heat conversion of broadband metamaterial absorbers based on TiN nanoparticles under laser and solar illumination

We theoretically investigate photothermal heating of ultra-flexible metamaterials, which are obtained by randomly mixing TiN nanoparticles in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Due to the plasmonic properties of TiN nanoparticles, incident light is perfectly absorbed in a broadband range (300-3000 nm) to generate heat within these metamaterials. Under irradiation of an 808 nm near-infrared laser with different intensities, our predicted temperature rises as a function of time agree well with recent experimental data. For a given laser intensity, the temperature rise varies non-monotonically with concentration of TiN nanoparticles because the enhancement of thermal conductivity and absorbed energy as adding plasmonic nanostructures leads to opposite effects on the heating process. When the model is extended to solar heating, photothermal behaviors are qualitatively similar but the temperature increase is less than 13 KK. Our studies would provide good guidance for future experimental studies on the photo-to-heat conversion of broadband perfect absorbers.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publications in Materials Today Communication

Present and future use of antimicrobials in pigs in developing countries and case studies from Uganda and Vietnam

Demand for pork is growing rapidly in developing countries, and will be mostly met by intensive production. Although this can produce large quantities of affordable meat, it can have environmental, social and human health externalities. We report on recent studies conducted by ILRI and partners on antimicrobial use in pork production in developing countries and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pork

Identification of nonlinear heat transfer laws from boundary observations

    Get PDF
We consider the problem of identifying a nonlinear heat transfer law at the boundary, or of the temperature-dependent heat transfer coefficient in a parabolic equation from boundary observations. As a practical example, this model applies to the heat transfer coefficient that describes the intensity of heat exchange between a hot wire and the cooling water in which it is placed. We reformulate the inverse problem as a variational one which aims to minimize a misfit functional and prove that it has a solution. We provide a gradient formula for the misfit functional and then use some iterative methods for solving the variational problem. Thorough investigations are made with respect to several initial guesses and amounts of noise in the input data. Numerical results show that the methods are robust, stable and accurate
