The first known book published in Basque language (Etchepare 1545) may yet harbour a few surprises. As a matter of fact the verb pintatu in the following excerpt: Nyri υn∫a ez padaguit vehardicit pintatu has always been consistently translated as 'to drink' or 'to drink excessively', 'to drink like a fish', but this direct translation can be challenged by a more plausible contextualized proposal such as 'to pretend', 'to lure' or 'to hoax', which would take into account the various Castilian and French meanings of 'pintar' and 'peindre' (to paint), originated from the Latin word pingere

Oihenarten atsotitzak eta gaurko fraseologia

International audienceOihenartek bildu zituen atsotitzen bilduma (1657) bietan da garrantzi handikoa: behin, euskal paremiologiaren historian oinarrizko obra delakotz, Vinsonek jadanik erran bezala; eta bestalde, bere olerkien hontzeko tresneria atsotitzetan esprabatu zuelakotz, J.B Orpustan erakusten ari den bezala. In this article, the author proposes some lexico-semantic considerations on the concept of "vieillir" in Basque language. To tell the truth, the term "vieillir" which says "zahartu" out of Basque is not exactly the object of the study but rather the term "zahar", "vieux", which can be adjective or substantive and from which the verb "zahartu" is only derived. This short note will present the various meanings of the word "zahar", and its antonyms, the shifts in meaning of "zahar" towards "mauvais" and the use of the word in phraseology. Some remarks will be made on the other terms designating somebody or something who is old.Dans cet article, l'auteur propose quelques considérations lexico-sémantiques sur la notion de "vieillir" en langue basque. A vrai dire, le terme "vieillir" qui se dit "zahartu" en basque n'est pas exactement l'objet de l'étude mais plutôt le terme "zahar", "vieux", qui peut être adjectif ou substantif et dont le verbe "zahartu" n'est qu'un dérivé. L'interprétation dans les atlas linguistiques ? Le cas de l'Atlas linguistique basque (EHHA). Application à la carte 'caille'.

The Basque linguistic atlas, in the process of publication, which follows the majority of presupposed of traditional linguistics, brings some methodological innovations however, in particular in the presentation of the data: response lists, indices, small size charts with the lemmatized forms and not with the collected answers, on paper medium and CD-Romanian. These innovations are justified by the public, that we wish larger than that of the only specialists. They allow also the best highlighted of dialectal fragmentation by showing various cases of figure on the charts whose semiology will be exposed through various examples. An illustration starting from the chart 'quail' will show that this cartography does not exhaust the information stored in the data base. This contribution thus associates an overall picture on the presentation of the data of atlas and a more particular study on precise data.L'atlas linguistique basque, en cours de publication, qui suit la plupart des présupposés de la géolinguistique traditionnelle, apporte cependant quelques nouveautés méthodologiques, en particulier dans la présentation des données : responsaires, index, cartes à petit format des formes lemmatisées et non des réponses recueillies, sur support papier et sur CD-rom. Ces nouveautés sont justifiées par le public recherché, que nous souhaitons plus vaste que celui des seuls spécialistes. Elles permettent aussi une meilleure mise en évidence de la fragmentation dialectale en montrant divers cas de figure sur les cartes dont la sémiologie sera exposée à travers divers exemples. Une illustration à partir de la carte ‘caille' / ‘quail' montrera que cette cartographie n'épuise pas les informations conservées dans la base de données. Cette contribution associe donc une vue d'ensemble sur la présentation des données d'atlas à une étude plus particulière sur des données précises
