This research work focuses on the study of Argaric ceramics recovered from the
archaeological site of Peñalosa (Baños de la Encina, Jaen), a newly founded settlement
which was occupied between 2200 and 1450 BCE. The excavations at this site were
carried out between 1986 and 2011, having obtained an extensive and well-preserved
amount of ceramic that belong to the Argaric culture. The outstanding
contextualization and dating of the material have allowed us to establish a link
between the containers and the space they were found in. The afore mentioned
elements have allowed us to obtain different types of information (cultural, social,
economic, ritual, etc.) regarding the inhabitants of this settlement.
Until now, there have been many works in relation to the metallurgical ceramics from
Peñalosa, while those focuses on the technological production of ceramics from
domestic and funerary contexts are scarcer. Due to this fact, this studied has centered
its attention on the ceramic elements from both these areas.
The line of research has included the analyses of the ceramic elements at a decorative,
typological and technological level. Firstly, we obtained a ceramic typology based on
the morphometric data obtained from containers that could be reconstructed,
applying a multivariable statistical analysis (MSA). Secondly, we applied a series of
techniques used in Earth Sciences (stereomicroscopy with binocular microscopes, X-ray
diffraction, petrographic thin section, X-ray-fluorescence and Fourier-transform
infrared spectroscopy), applying a statistical examination of the data that was
obtained. Finally, we have studied the techniques and decorative motifs of the ceramic
elements.
Through the study of these ceramics, we have been able to determine that certain
shapes were maintained throughout the entire occupational sequence of Peñalosa,
though some small variations or changes have been identified, and could correspond
to demographic fluctuations within the settlement, leading to changes in the storage,
preparation and consumption of food. Furthermore, we have been able to identify a
high degree of knowledge regarding the production of ceramics by means of applying certain production techniques that are more or less homogeneous and standardized,
though some variations that differ from the rest of the ceramic set could be associated
to the learning processes, the presence of foreign ceramics, or even some punctual
experimentations. Finally, the decorative study has allowed us to distinguish between
ceramics with decorations are characteristic of Argaric contexts (commonly reduced to
impressions or digitations on the lip of the ceramics, ropes on the body and
“mamelons”) and proto-cogotas decorative elements. This second group is of special
interest having been able to infer the existence of trade and ties between Peñalosa
and other sites of the Iberian Peninsula.Tesis Univ. Granada
Tecno-typological study of recent copper ceramics of los Castillejos (Montefrío, Granada)
In this research work we present the results obtained through the application of X-ray diffraction and stereomicroscopy to the pottery found in the excavation campaigns carried out between 1991 and 1994 at the levels of Late Copper Age of Los Castillejos (Montefrío, Granada). These analytical techniques have allowed us to study the ceramic production of this deposit at the last moment of the Copper Age, based on the characterization of its ceramic pastes, as well as the typology of its forms. From our study we have been able to determine that the productions are of local character, made mostly with raw materials from the environment of Los Castillejos, whose manufacturing process denotes some skill by the craftsman, although it’s hard to confirm a systematization of ceramic manufacturing due to the poor relation between form-technology
Pottery grave goods from funerary contexts at the argaric site of Peñalosa (Jaén). A methodological approach
The need for interdisciplinary studies is the basis of ambitious
research (ARCHEM Project) that is carried out in the argaric settlement of
and techno-typological studies of pottery found in funerary contexts.
Manufacture and use of pottery could inform us about customs and traditions
that remain hidden in time and in the archaeological record. Knowing the
implications and decisions of potters as well as the functionality of those
vessels deposited inside the graves can approach the idiosyncrasy of a society
in the Bronze Age in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula. The methodology
used to identify patterns of functionality is highlighted by the combination
of cutting-edge analysis techniques in both fields such as the application
of different chromatographic techniques (GC-MS, UPLC-HRMS and GC-CIRMS)
that allow to identify the organic compounds in the ceramics and the
application of analytical techniques from Earth Sciences (Stereomicroscopic,
X-Ray Diffraction and Petrography), which allow us to characterize ceramic
pastes and knowing the catchment of raw materials. This study highlights the
Peñalosa site as a melting pot of new research and it brings us closer with the
use of a complex methodology combined to the societies 4000 years ago.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness

In this research work, it present a typological classification and a decorative study about pottery of Early Copper (2600-2000 a.C.) from the 1991-1994 excavation campaigns of the archaeological site of Los Castillejos (Montefrío, Granada). To perform the typological groupings we have applied multivariate statistical techniques, such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA). From the results obtained, it has been possible to establish a total of 15 typological groups, with 31 different types of pottery forms. Also, we have been able to determine the predominant decorative techniques and approach to the relation between form and functionality of the containers.
Argarska lončenina iz grobišča Peñalosa (Jaén, Spain): Proizvodna tehnologija in funkcionalnost
The interpretation of the manufacture and function of Argaric burial potteries has not been subject to a global and systematic study. As such, this paper has reconstructed the sequence of ceramic production of burial potteries of Peñalosa using analytical techniques (stereomicroscopy, X-ray diffraction and optical petrography). Ceramic ware technological features, as well as other indicators of use and repair, indicate that the pottery was used prior to the burial either in domestic contexts or during funerary rituals. This finding contrasts with data obtained at other Argaric sites, where technological and formal features point to pottery production specifically intended for burials.
Proceedings from the 5th scientific conference Methodology and Archaeometry
