    Social conformity and autism spectrum disorder : a child-friendly take on a classic study

    Perhaps surprisingly, given the importance of conformity as a theoretical construct in social psychology and the profound implications autism has for social function, little research has been done on whether autism is associated with the propensity to conform to a social majority. This study is a modern, child-friendly implementation of the classic Asch conformity studies. The performance of 15 children with autism was compared to that of 15 typically developing children on a line judgement task. Children were matched for age, gender and numeracy and literacy ability. In each trial, the child had to say which of three lines a comparison line matched in length. On some trials, children were misled as to what most people thought the answer was. Children with autism were much less likely to conform in the misleading condition than typically developing children. This finding was replicated using a continuous measure of autism traits, the Autism Quotient questionnaire, which showed that autism traits negatively correlated with likelihood to conform in the typically developing group.     Nickel hydrogen bipolar battery electrode design

    The preferred approach of the NASA development effort in nickel hydrogen battery design utilizes a bipolar plate stacking arrangement to obtain the required voltage-capacity configuration. In a bipolar stack, component designs must take into account not only the typical design considerations such as voltage, capacity and gas management, but also conductivity to the bipolar (i.e., intercell) plate. The nickel and hydrogen electrode development specifically relevant to bipolar cell operation is discussed. Nickel oxide electrodes, having variable type grids and in thicknesses up to .085 inch are being fabricated and characterized to provide a data base. A selection will be made based upon a system level tradeoff. Negative (hydrpogen) electrodes are being screened to select a high performance electrode which can function as a bipolar electrode. Present nickel hydrogen negative electrodes are not capable of conducting current through their cross-section. An electrode was tested which exhibits low charge and discharge polarization voltages and at the same time is conductive. Test data is presented

    Formation of rings in galactic discs by infalling small companions

    We use N-body simulations to study the formation of rings in a disc galaxy by the impact of a small spherical companion. Both barred and nonbarred target discs are considered. We discuss the effect of the properties of the target disc (distribution of mass in the disc, velocity dispersion, etc.) as well as of the mass and orbit of the companion on the properties of the rings, such as their amplitude, width, shape, expansion velocity and lifetime. In particular the amplitude, width, lifetime and expansion velocity of the first ring increase considerably with companion mass, and so does the expansion velocity of the particles in it and the total extent of the disc after the interaction. We also discuss the formation and evolution of spokes and show that they can be caused by companions of relatively small mass. In our three examples of oblique impacts on barred target galaxies we note important transient displacements of the bar, as well as changes of its pattern speed and size. An asymmetric pseudoring is formed in each case, and during the first stages of its evolution the bar forms part of it.Comment: 21 pages Latex, 22 figures, of which 7 as separate gif-files.     Untangling the socio-political knots: A systems view on Indonesia's inclusive energy transitions

    National energy transitions face complex socio-political challenges, ranging from inertia to exacerbated inequalities. There are limited studies investigating these dimensions, especially in developing economies. This paper presents Indonesia, a country with high fossil fuel dependency, as a valuable case study to investigate the societal interplay affecting transitions. Interviews and literature analyses were conducted to assess barriers and levers to success. The findings are further analysed with systems thinking (ST), highlighting dynamic patterns and interdependencies. It is found that conflicting interests, inconsistent regulation, and low capability at the implementation level are among the most persistent barriers creating disparities between intentions and reality. These leave some groups disproportionately disadvantaged; notably, regions with fossil fuel-dependent income, informal sectors, and indigenous and local communities. Recommendations include the creation of an independent agency for the energy transition, and empowering regional participation.
