Multitemporal dendrogeomorphological analysis of slope instability in Upper Orcia Valley (Southern Tuscany, Italy)
The Upper Orcia Valley (Southern Tuscany, Italy) is a key site for the
comprehension of denudation processes typically acting in Mediterranean
badlands (calanchi) areas, thanks to the availability of long-lasting
erosion monitoring datasets and the rapidity of erosion processes development.
These features make the area suitable as an open air laboratory
for the study of badlands dynamic and changes in geoheritage due to
erosion (i.e. active geomorphosites).
Decadal multitemporal investigations on the erosion rates and the
geomorphological dynamics of the study area allowed to highlight a decrease
in the average water erosion rates during the last 60 years. More in
detail, a reduction of bare land and, consequently, of erosion processes
effectiveness and a contemporary increasing frequency of mass wasting
events were recorded. These trends can be partly related to the land cover
changes occurred in the study area from the 1950s onwards, which
consist of the significant increase of reforestation practices and important
other forms of human impacts on slopes, mainly land levelling for
agricultural exploitation.
In order to better identify the most significant phases of geomorphological
instability occurred in this area during the last decades, an
integrated approach based on multitemporal geomorphological mapping
and dendrogeomorphology analysis on specimen of Pinus nigra Arn.
was used. In detail, trees colonizing a denudation slope located in the
surrounding of the Radicofani town (Tuscany, Italy) and characterized
by calanchi and shallow mass movements deposits, were analyzed for
the 1985-2012 time period. The analysis of the growth anomaly indexes
and of compression wood allowed to determine a spatio-temporal differentiation
along the slope and respect to an undisturbed reference site.
The negative anomaly index results to be more pronounced in the trees
located on the investigated slope with respect to the ones sampled in
a non-disturbed area. Compression wood characterizes trees on slope
sectors mainly affected by runoff and/or mass movements with a different
persistence. Erosion rates were finally calculated through dendrogeomorphological
analysis on tree roots exposure (0.31-3 cm/y runoff
prevailing; 5.86-27.5 cm/y, mass movements prevailing). Dendrogeomorphological
results are in accordance with those obtained in the investigated
areas with multitemporal photogrammetric and geomorphologic
analyses
Turmoil over the crisis: innovation capabilities and firm exit
This work investigates the relationship between the characteristics and survival probabilities of firms, distinguishing between âinvoluntaryâ firm exit and exit by merger and acquisition (M&A). More in detail, we study how, and to what extent, innovation capabilities, as proxied by patents and trademarks, are able to shape, together with standard performance variables, the observed dynamics at the firm level. By using comprehensive data on Italian firms from business registers, we separate the administrative procedures leading to âinvoluntaryâ exit from those ending up with an event of M&A. We find that while higher productivity is associated with a lower probability of âinvoluntaryâ exit, productivity increases the chances of being the target for M&A. As far as intellectual property instruments are concerned, they tend to reduce the probability of both âinvoluntaryâ exit and M&A. However, the relative importance of the two instruments differs according to the exit route: patents are more relevant than trademarks in preventing âinvoluntaryâ exit, while the opposite is true for M&A. Plain English Summary We investigate firmâs exit after a crisis. Overall innovation plays a positive role, but the relative importance of IP depends on the exit route: patents are more relevant than trademarks against âinvoluntaryâ exit, while the opposite is true for M&A. We resort to the virtual universe of Italian limited liability firms from manufacturing, trade, and service to investigate the determinants of firm survival over the period 2010â2014. We scrutinize detailed administrative data on significant events occurring to firms to distinguish between events leading to involuntary exit and to M&A. In addition to the evidence on innovation, our results show that higher productivity decreases the probability of âinvoluntaryâ exit, yet productivity increases the chances of being the target for M&A. Taken together, these findings warn against a simplistic perspective on exit: the role of innovation and firm characteristics heavily depends on the exit route
Anthropogenic modifications to the drainage network of Rome (Italy). The case study of the Aqua Mariana
Rome is characterized by millennia of urbanization. Long lasting geomorphological investigations have allowed the geomorphological description of the city centre and the valorisation of its geomorphological heritage. In this paper the spatial change of the hydrographic network in historical times is illustrated, with some examples showing how deep has been, and still it is, the link between the historical-cultural development and the natural geomorphological and hydrological characteristics of the Roman territory. In particular, the most relevant human interventions on the drainage network, in the southern area of the city centre, have been investigated. Before the land-use modifications of Roman-age, this area was drained by the most important left tributary of the Tiber River within the city walls, the Nodicus River, more recently known as Aqua Mariana. This stream has undergone many anthropogenic modifications and diversions during the centuries, and its original path is known only downstream of the San Giovanni Basilica. According to geomorphological, archaeological and geological evidences, it is possible to hypothesize that the dimension of the pre-urbanization drainage basin, as known and reconstructed in the available literature, should have been until now underestimated
Italianismi lessicali in saho
After a brief characterisation of the Saho language, spoken in Eritrea and some adjoining areas of Tigray, the authors outline a history of the development of literacy in this language from the late XIX century till now. The bulk of this paper consists in the analysis of ca. 300 Italian loanwords collected mainly from (i.) the Saho-English- Italian dictionary published by Vergari & Vergari in 2003, (ii.) Saho school books, (iii.) other supplementary textbooks and the Saho version of the Eritrean Constitution, and (iv.) native speakers of Saho in Eritrea between 2000 and 2007.
Most of these loanwords are nouns, but there are also three verbs and nine interjections. Their integration into Saho phonology and morphology are discussed in § 4 together with some features they share with Italian loanwords in Somali and Tigrinya, as well as with the Eritrean Italian pidgin described by Habte-Mariam Marcos (1976). The main semantic fields these loanwords belong to are: mechanic and building technologies, sports, the army, games, clothing, food and other household-related words
Non-invasive biomechanical characterization of intervertebral discs by shear wave ultrasound elastography: a feasibility study.

Shear wave elastography is a novel technique that allows quantitative evaluation of soft-tissues' mechanical properties. The aim of this study was to assess preliminary the feasibility and reliability of mechanical characterization of cervical intervertebral discs by elastography and to provide first reference values for asymptomatic subjects. METHODS: Elastographic measurements were performed to determine shear wave speed (SWS) in C6-C7 or C7-T1 disc of 47 subjects; repeatability and inter-operator reproducibility were assessed. RESULTS: Global average shear wave speed (SWS) was 3.0â±â0.4 m/s; measurement repeatability and inter-user reproducibility were 7 and 10%, respectively. SWS was correlated with both subject's age (pâ=â1.3âĂâ10(-5)) and body mass index (pâ=â0.008). CONCLUSIONS: Shear wave elastography in intervertebral discs proved reliable and allowed stratification of subjects according to age and BMI. Applications could be relevant, for instance, in early detection of disc degeneration or in follow-up after trauma; these results open the way to larger cohort studies to define the place of this technique in routine intervertebral disc assessment. KEY POINTS: A simple method to obtain objectively intervertebral disc status is still lacking. Shear wave elastography was applied in vivo to assess intervertebral discs. Elastography showed promising results in biomechanical disc evaluation. Intervertebral disc characterization by shear wave elastography: An in vitro preliminary study.

While geometrical personalization of the spine is no more an issue, thanks to recent technological advances, non-invasive personalization of soft tissue's mechanical properties remains a challenge. Ultrasound elastography is a relatively recent measurement technique allowing the evaluation of soft tissue's elastic modulus through the measurement of shear wave speed. The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility of elastographic measurements in intervertebral disc. An in vitro approach was chosen to test the hypothesis that shear wave speed can be used to evaluate intervertebral disc mechanical properties and to assess measurement repeatability. In total, 11 oxtail intervertebral discs were tested in compression to determine their stiffness and apparent elastic modulus at rest and at 400 N. Elastographic measurements were performed in these two conditions and compared to these mechanical parameters. The protocol was repeated six times to determine elastographic measurement repeatability. Average shear wave speed over all samples was 5.3 ± 1.0 m/s, with a repeatability of 7% at rest and 4.6% at 400 N; stiffness and apparent elastic modulus were 266.3 ± 70.5 N/mm and 5.4 ± 1.1 MPa at rest, respectively, while at 400 N they were 781.0 ± 153.8 N/mm and 13.2 ± 2.4 MPa, respectively. Random sum-product networks: A simple and effective approach to probabilistic deep learning
Sum-product networks (SPNs) are expressive probabilistic models with a rich set of exact and efficient inference routines. However, in order to guarantee exact inference, they require specific structural constraints, which complicate learning SPNs from data. Thereby, most SPN structure learners proposed so far are tedious to tune, do not scale easily, and are not easily integrated with deep learning frameworks. In this paper, we follow a simple âdeep learningâ approach, by generating unspecialized random structures, scalable to millions of parameters, and subsequently applying GPU-based optimization. Somewhat surprisingly, our models often perform on par with state-of-the-art SPN structure learners and deep neural networks on a diverse range of generative and discriminative scenarios. At the same time, our models yield well-calibrated uncertainties, and stand out among most deep generative and discriminative models in being robust to missing features and being able to detect anomalies
A new classification system for degenerative spondylolisthesis of the lumbar spine

The final version is available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.PURPOSE: There is no consensus for a comprehensive analysis of degenerative spondylolisthesis of the lumbar spine (DSLS). A new classification system for DSLS based on sagittal alignment was proposed. Its clinical relevance was explored. METHODS: Health-related quality-of-life scales (HRQOLs) and clinical parameters were collected: SF-12, ODI, and low back and leg pain visual analog scales (BP-VAS, LP-VAS). Radiographic analysis included Meyerding grading and sagittal parameters: segmental lordosis (SL), L1-S1 lumbar lordosis (LL), T1-T12 thoracic kyphosis (TK), pelvic incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), and sagittal vertical axis (SVA). Patients were classified according to three main types-1A: preserved LL and SL; 1B: preserved LL and reduced SL (â€5°); 2A: PI-LL â„10° without pelvic compensation (PT < 25°); 2B: PI-LL â„10° with pelvic compensation (PT â„ 25°); type 3: global sagittal malalignment (SVA â„40 mm). RESULTS: 166 patients (119 F: 47 M) suffering from DSLS were included. Mean age was 67.1 ± 11 years. DSLS demographics were, respectively: type 1A: 73 patients, type 1B: 3, type 2A: 8, type 2B: 22, and type 3: 60. Meyerding grading was: grade 1 (n = 124); grade 2 (n = 24). Affected levels were: L4-L5 (n = 121), L3-L4 (n = 34), L2-L3 (n = 6), and L5-S1 (n = 5). Mean sagittal parameter values were: PI: 59.3° ± 11.9°; PT: 24.3° ± 7.6°; SVA: 29.1 ± 42.2 mm; SL: 18.2° ± 8.1°. DSLS types were correlated with age, ODI and SF-12 PCS (Ï = 0.34, p < 0.05; Ï = 0.33, p < 0.05; Ï = -0.20, and p = 0.01, respectively). CONCLUSION: This classification was consistent with age and HRQOLs and could be a preoperative assessment tool. Its therapeutic impact has yet to be validated.
